Just wondering why you didn't drain the oil using the sump plug, it would have saved a lot of mess and prevented it covering the exhaust
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
Why disturb the sump plug and waste another sealing washer, I can just pour it back in once the casings are re-fitted...

Seeing that ol' gasket brought back memories to the late 70's...we always used cereal boxes for gakets and if we were well off a smearing of that lovely smelling orange gasket sealant..😎👍

Never thought of it this way but always kept my paint cans indoor where it’s warm…. Winter time… full blast kerosene jet heater warm up garage before painting… ( of course heater off). Every 2 hours warm up my garage. My garage gets down 30-40 degrees in winter. 😢… few years ago… I had one paint can exploded while freezing… ( weird)

Del your vids inspired a non-mechanically minded bike owner like me to get my hands greasy. Small steps but small bike mods and things like brake pad/ disc changes, fluid flushes and renewals have now whetted the appetite to do more. All in an tiny old garage like your old one brother!

Would sandblasting instead of 600 grit, work just as well for the primer stage?
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
No Tony, Not Sandblasting, that'd be way too savage, perhaps bead blasting on a gentle setting, but the risk of getting glass beads in the engine, even just a few left over after washing could wreak havoc in the engine... so im far happier just scuffing them back by hand for peace of mind.!

It doesn't last mate, You can't key it properly if you want a shiny finish under the lacquer, a couple of season of winter salt here and you'd be doing it again.. Black like the rest of the engine, wash off and park it..lol!
@laceandwhisky Жыл бұрын
Hard to find a decent engine lacquer that does the job. Paint is made up of more polymers and binding agents so doesn't chip or wear as much. I use pj1 paints

i used the tough paint for the first on my zzr 1400 after watching you use it for years to spray my wheels i couldnt believe they started to corrode no primer from the factory. i used etch first i no you can use it withought it dont seem right im a pro sprayer by trade its funny old stuff to spray it goes on like dog shit reminds me of back in the day when we were using synthetic it flows out well to a nice flat finish. part of the problem it flashes of to quick by the time you've done one side your almost getting over spray on on the side you have just done on my type of wheels theres lots of nooks and crannies to get into which takes time much easier to use on a flatter surface hope you and penny are well shame we dont see her anymore fantastick name for a lady penn

I'm glad it worked out for you buddy, You're right, it is a slightly different paint to the regular rattle cans, but for me they are too loose and too likely to run unless you're working in plus+30 degrees, wen i painted wheel with it, i spun them on a stand to keep them moving and able to load the paint up in one wet coat, it worked really well, and if it's under 15c also, then that does give you a lot more flash time too ! Have a great weekend mate, and thanks for your support as always.

Props to you Del for giving a well-deserved shout out to the craftsman who made the cereal box gasket. Back when working on the big trucks you couldn't hold the rig in the shop for want of a gasket so you made one. Hi Del, nice job as always. You have given me the idea to possibly completely black out my 900 Hornet. It's a black bike and I think it might look good completely black (incl fork tubes)with maybe just the red kill switch and a red spring on the mono shock to subtly break up the black. I will kick the idea around and make sure I want to keep it first. Cheers Del 👍
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
Good idea mate, do a few components at a time and spread it out so there are no large single areas of black, plenty of shiney fasteners and shiney details and it'll look great... if you go all too black, they can look a bit 'rat' when they get dirty (unless that's what you want!)
@michaelmclarney1994 Жыл бұрын
@@Moonfleet41 thanks for the advice Del, I don't like the rat look but doing bit at a time might break things up as I will end up with different shades of black. If I go ahead with this, is it feasible to do the engine in one piece, minus the bolt on covers, with careful masking and prep?
