My OCD at the Troopy's reverse staggered front n rear track... though I love 78 series LC's coz I used to work with them. The steering response that feels like you're ruddering a concrete barge with a paper plate, the turning circle that orbits the sun, agricultural gearbox from a tractor, the cascading waterfall of water that saturates you when you open the door after a downpour, the doors you have to slam so hard to shut they should come with a 'may dent door in process' sticker - these things are BEAST & utilitarian alternate fun lol Still, I'll take the Jimny & buy overseas holidays + a Toyota 86 with the spare change to a Troopy.

Having owned an Africa spec , non power steering 1hz 80series (1992) I would add 2 doors and minus two digits from the 78 , yes I would take a 76 all day long . The Jimney is a nimble weekend toy , as soon as you are eating 700km+ in a sitting without stopping for feul , the Jimny is out . I currently have a tdv8 Range Rover and just the other day I did 1327km on 105l of feul . Thats right , I was behind the wheel for 13 hours . I have done similar trips in the 80 series too . I would have been stranded before the next feul stop in the Jimny , if you're a city slicker who wants to go play in the dirt , the Jimny is your car . If you want and need a dedicated long distance offroader , the Land Cruiser will not let you down .

Protip from a jimny owner, go straight to 10psi off road. They're so light the low pressure doesn't do any damage, it gives you more traction and most importantly, you don't need a spine reconstruction after a day's off roading ;) Also, not sure what on road pressures you were running but around 26-28 is a great balance between ride, handling and tyre wear. Great video :)

Great comparison I reckon. Both of these vehicles are based on very old design, rock solid, and ultra reliable. They’ve both solidified themselves as awesome 4x4’s over a very long period of time and represent something for all budgets. I can’t think of any other 4x4’s that have been on the market for so long with the same basic design. If your in the middle of the bush, simplicity wins for me. Some basic upgrades like a 2” lift, snorkel, and bullbar would be great, although for an occasional weekend warrior there both fine. Great journalism 👍

The Troop Carrier is still on the Toyota site - it's just a bit hidden. Go here and you'll see: www.toyota.com.au/main/landcruiser-70/prices Thanks Matt

I would take one of each. Both great cars, well one truck and one shopping trolley Haha

"Truck?" This isn't America, we don't use their definition of "truck."

The choice of using Toyota Land Cruisers instead of Mercedes, Landrover, Bmw or Suzuki in the army and in the middle east says enough. The Land Cruiser is the way to go!

According to the handbook, wading depth should not exceed 30 cm. I am only 500 km into the 1000 km run-in, so don't want to hammer my vehicle yet :-)

Should’ve compared the jimmy to a 2 door 70 series landcruiser to be fair

New short wheelbase 70s are not available in Australia. The 4 door 76 is the shortest you can get.

Landcruiser made its name being reliably More than I can say for Suzuki cars, A old mk1 discovery can do what the landcruiser is doing but I wouldn't want a land rover, Toyota landcruiser 4.2 all the way you cant go wrong. Stay away from d4d they are troublesome.

believe me landcruiser doesn't use 10.9L, why I know, because I have one, more like around 13.0L and up

do you have a bullbar etc on yours? the new model also has a better 5th gear which helps a lot compared to prior models.
