Obviously u never owned a Samurai or u wouldn't call it a "clown-mobile". It is amazing what they can do in mud, snow, sand & rocks modified or not. They are seen all over the world & have a huge following & genuine love & appreciation for them. My now husband taught me how to drive stick on his "91 Sammi & I had the option to get a "00 brand new jeep (then) bought for me, I chose an "88 Samurai instead, still have it today, has never broke down or had any issue, other than minor oil leaks.

I busted a 3/8" cable on an 8000# winch on my 1964 International Travelall 4X4. Slid partially off a snow/ice dirt road and tried pulling up to left at a 45 degree angle. Tried under power and neutral. Cable broke. Cold night in the back of that sucker! Hiked down in the morning (6 miles) to nearest phone. 3/4 ton Powerwagon tow truck (a heap) pulled me back onto road, then he blew a tire off bead w/no spare. Celled another 4X4 from station to help. I split. What a trip that was.

That's correct. The rule of holes states that if you find yourself in a hole, STOP DIGGING. Simple stuff.

I've been stuck. Oh, yeah. Due to my own fault like not airing down BEFORE getting stuck. I had one truck, 66 Chevy Carryall 2wd stuck for 3 days. Took 300 feet of rope and a come-along to free it. At least 4 four wheelers got stuck trying to get me out. They never got close enough to even try. I first got pulled out by a VW van with big tires on the back but as we were unhooking, I sank again. He drove out w/o getting stuck. I got a picture of it stuck, somewhere. This was in 1976.

I just put a v6 out of a Jeep Liberty, in my '02 samurai, fit 33"x13 tires under her, regeared for torque, and will still go 90 easy. I was the only one who didn't get stuck last roadin'.

When I'm in sand and my truck is coming to a stop under throttle, I stop before the truck does. Guys go, "Why'd you stop? You weren't stuck." I go, " Not yet". I get out, let air from tires and proceed. Letting air out after you're buried only puts the truck further on the axles and frame making any foreward progress futile. Prep BEFORE you get stuck. I had a truck sit for 3 days/nights before I got it out back in '76 and I'll never let that happen again.

while being winched, people usually use power because they dont want to winch them selves all the way out of the hole. they want to see if at some point they can get traction and make the process a little bit faster.
@47485ksc
@47485ksc 12 жыл бұрын
@ 0:56 Once you're stuck (vehicle is not capable of moving foreward or backward under it's own) there's no use in spinning the tires fore and aft. It's stuck. All you're doing is digging it deeper. 3:26 perfect example. When being winched, leave it off in neutral. Don't try power unless you're being pulled by another vehicle.

Exactly..& making it more difficult for the next ones..I have honestly never seen more bad judgement in 4wheelin' in my life. I own a Samurai, the driver of the Sammi on 3:26 is a D-bag, kept his tires spinning when it was clear he wasn't going anywhere & then still kept at it (& being hard on his engine/clutch/gears while the wench was trying to pull him out, making it harder on the wench to. Seems not many there get the strategy of 4x'n I feel sorry for his Sammi, good thing they are tough.

I've learned "Never answer the phone in the middle of the night." I did once and a friend was stuck in the riverbed. Miles away. He promised me $100 to come and help. I got like $10 and never got the rest. This was like 1985. Ever see the bumper sticker: "Yes, it's my truck. No, I won't help you move!"? Kinda applies, here. I'm all for helping friends and all but when promised dough to help and it never is paid, no. I saw the guy a year ago and should just ask him. He's 870 miles away.

Spinning just sinks you deeper setting axles/frame on the ground making it harder to drag out. People don't realize what 4 wheel drive is actually about and what it's for. It's not about doing "rad" shit off-road. It's not about jacking the rig up through the roof. Four wheel drive was created for low-traction situations, not looking for the deepest mudhole and ruining the "Rad By" by filling up the axle housings, trans/transfer cases and fuel tanks with muddy water.

When being winched by another vehicle, leave your engine off. That's what I meant. It's also for the fact that if you're being winched and you suddenly get traction, you could launch forward and wrap winch cable around your tires/wheels. Just air down before you leave the pavement.

I meant winched by another vehicle. I know about battery drain. I worked at a rental yard that rented trucks with electric/hydraulic lift gates. Stoop customers would load/unload with engine off and always calling, "The battery is dead. It won't start." We never charged for service calls but should have.

I'm VERY PROUD to drive my Sammi. & they r not top heavy, its the narrow wheel base ie, jeep also, that flips them & only if u drive like an idiot. Most people tow them up to wheel & they are AWSOME & very capable, even stock.& have a huge following, so stick it. U probably never saw/rode/drove 1 in ur life, if u did, u would be lovin them 2. I've had mine since I was 19, now 34, never even come close to flipping it. Thats 1 difference between women & men, also why mine is as sweet as me!

if you leave the engine off youll kill the battery,,,, an alternator charges best at 2000 rpm so why not have the rig in first gear and help the winch a little, dont get your wheel speed to 1000km/h but help the winch, your right to let the winch do the work, but helping it as much as your rig can is not going to hurt the winch.....

also you should never just rely on a winch to pull you out, unless its insanely powerful. winches never really work that well. Snatch strap is usually better if possible.

Ahahaha, yeah my brother rings me up to pull him out of a bog in the landcruiser 80 series we have, in his hzj troop carrier. When i get out there he's driven out onto a salt pan. I get half way out and realize his transmissions screwed and i sink, through the wet sand into sticky clay. So then we get the hand winch out, walk a couple of kay, pull him out with that, then drive back, and HE gets bogged trying to get me out. Luckily we know some good old local boys with a recovery vehicle.

In sand, I've been going along and start bogging down and BEFORE coming to a stuck stop, I stop. Guy riding shotgun usually says, "Why'd you stop? Now you're gonna get stuck." I go, "Watch this." I get out, let air out of the tires for floatation and continue on. Can't get stuck if you try, now. If you wait until you are stopped and start burying it, it's too late to let air out 'cause you'll lower the vehicle right onto the axles and/or frame. Gotta use common sense. I've never been stuck..?

I don't know how you can drive around in one and keep a straight face. A little anemic 4 banger taking all it's got to spin "Mudder" tires on level ground. I know they're popular with the meth crowd 'cause they're a breeze to steal and not many people care if they are stolen. To each his own, but I'd feel unsafe on public roads in some jacked-up top-heavy easily flipped 1300 pound riceball. I'll stick w/my vintage International Harvester light trucks.
