Whenever anyone is looking for a fun hot hatch on a budget that doesn't come with the usual gripes of poor fuel economy, mediocre reliability, or completely dated safety/tech, I struggle to find a better recommendation than a Mk2 Suzuki Swift Sport.
I owned a 2013 Swift Sport identical to this for 2 years and here I explain why I think it's one of the best budget hot hatches you can buy.

I just bought a 2015 Suzuki Swift Sport because of this video. I have been thinking about owning that car for a little while (my previous car was a 2013 Fiat Punto T-jet with some mods hehe) and after seeing this video for a couple times, I decided to start looking for an unit to buy. The car is really amazing, the drive experience is incredible, the feedback on the gearshift was definitely the point that I loved the most, the seats are really cool and so much comfortable, the suspension balance is perfect and of course the engine noise (mine is using an electric valve on exhaust system controlled by a remote) is music when getting at 6.900 rpm. It's a car for a person who knows what it's buying, especially in Brazil, where it's not very knowing by the people. There is no "status" for the Suzuki brand, so people don't usually look for the car. Because of that, it's hard to find, and who own one don't use to sell easily. For those who see cars, not just as a point A to B vehicle transportation but as something to enjoy, smiling, who really likes driving and especially to have fun, this car is going to make you really happy, and the best, with reliability and safety.

Febuary 3rd 2024... it's nice to see a review on this car by a person who loves to drive. I admired this car on my trips to the philippines, as they do not sell Suzuki in the United States. I'm 77 years old, but I love to drive, especially Manuel shift cars... another dying breed. I've had a 88 BMW M5 and I've had a 93 Supra Turbo... add about 30 other cars that were all manual shift... so who knows but my mind is certainly open to this little cutie .

I'm so happy about this video, I'm working at a partly Suzuki dealership, started my career there, currently still learning the job of a mechanic got a 1.2 Liter 94 HP Suzuki Swift from '15 (rn around 83000km on the clock) and man this thing is nice, I really love it, had one as my first car which I unfortunately crashed on wet road, going a little too fast and missing the needed braking point... Had me in shatters, a few months later I got myself another 1.2 Liter and I don't wonna be without it no more, ofc I'd wish to get myself the 1.6 but this is what I got for rn and I'm happy with it. It's hard living in a mostly vw, BMW, merc and whatsoever surrounding where nobody really understands and just underestimates this car as it is and Suzuki itself... It's a great brand imo and a great car too... It goes, it uses not too much gas, went with mine 190 km/h lately (very downhill haha) and I can just repeat myself, it's such a pleasure to my ears hearing someone saying such good and true things about this car. I'm also still a new driver which causes some extra wear and tear ofc but I couldn't wish for a better car as a starter really. Thanks mate, I really appreciate the time and effort and love you've put into this video and car, get yourself that exhaust and intake if you still got that beauty of a car, it'll sound just amazing. Thanks again and have a lovely time :))) ❤️🤙🏻

I bought a 2019 manual Swift Sport brand new, did a stage 1 chip tune which added around 15% to the power and lowered the suspension 30mm. Absolute cracker, 50,000km so far around Melbourne and some trips around country Victoria. Absolutely not one problem with it after 4 years, not even anything minor. I've also owned a Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32) since 2000 as a fun car and now it's a highly collectible car. Now I know the Skyline GT-R is 29 years old, but I've been slightly ashamed to admit to people that I enjoy driving the Swift Sport far more than my GT-R! It's tighter, much quicker from low rpm (obviously the GT-R is waaaay quicker once into stride in its boost zone), more comfortable, more chuckable, stops way harder etc..etc... Having read the comments from fellow owners here and watching your video, I can see my thoughts are not so silly. The Swift Sports are so underrated it's not funny. Just an amazing bit of kit for the money they are.

I have owned a 08 Swift Sport ZC31S MK1 (5 speed) for some time now. And I am totally in love w/ this car ! I'm old school & a big fan of NA, MT, Light Weight, Sharp Handling cars...And the SSS absolutely fits the bill. It astonishes me how Suzuki manufactured these 2 brilliant ( MK1 & MK2) cars for such low price ! They used Showa components, Recaro seats, a Drive Chain, instead of Belt, a High Revving M16A DOHC Engine...To me its like, "The Last of the Mohicans" ! A dying breed. A modern Japanese hot hatch with a Retro, Pure Feel & Spirit ! Some what Similar (w/out the great VTec) to the Civic EK9 Type R (early 90's) Wish the new SSS was as pure !

Really enjoying your videos, keep up the great work 👍 Also big respect for being honest when it exceeded your expectations, when you previously had negative preconceptions. Most people nowadays are attracted to turbocharged hatchbacks with low-end torque and whichever performs well on a carwow dragrace... I guess some of us are in the minority, who prefer something that is lightweight and compact like a Swift Sport, which you can ring its engine all the way above 7000rpm! Before the 'ban' of new petrol car sales come into place by 2030, it would be amazing if Suzuki can bring back the Cappuccino - a lightweight RWD sports kei car with double wishbone suspension 👌

I couldn't agree more! I seriously miss mine all the time, sadly my needs have evolved to needing frankly a large estate now but I have been tempted to swap out the MX-5 for one of these as the 'fun car that can do more'. In your shoes I'd treat myself to some second hand seats in newer condition and I'd go for the best Android Auto/CarPlay headunit you can budget if you haven't already. It really brings it 10 years forward. Or I'd put the fun CTC Air Intake in so that it's not droning and annoying when cruising but has extra vocal personality in the high revs! Otherwise they're pretty damn perfect

Used to have an old '01 Swift with the G13BB engine. Same power/weight ratio as this, as it weighed just 735KG with 86bhp. What a blast that was at the stopsigns, up to the speed limit. And into corners it was really fun, because it actually had independent rear suspension. Ofcourse on the highway it was nowhere, because there you need absolute horsepower. Cracking review mate. Yesterday I drove 200 miles round trip up to Penrith from Manchester to go and test drive a white 3 door 2016 model. I absolutely loved it. Sticks to the road like its on glue infused rails. Did wish it had a bit more power but I test drove it down some crooked and poorly built country lanes,it ride is great. Its stiff so that the car doesn't tilt much in the corners but still soft enough so it's comfortable. At the higher RPM it actually sounds sweet. I did test drive it alone which really suprised me how they basically just tossed me the keys asked for my keys and licence and told me where I should take it. I thought they will send me down some boring roads with loads of traffic buy boy was I wrong. Best 30 minute drive of my life.

Thanks so much pal! And what a sparkling review, you've hit the nail on the head! Isn't it an outrageously special little thing. Have you decided to go for it? I very much hope you end up with it! Also, if you put super unleaded in it genuinely drives even better. If you spend about £1000 you can remap, new exhaust and intake it and get it up to 150bhp which should fill that final gap plus make it sound more exciting. If I didn't need considerably more practicality I'd buy one again in a heartbeat. Adore them!

Absolutely spot on mate! My mrs has owned her 07 swift sport manual for about 4yrs and we absolutely love it! I owned a 2017 zc32s like yours but in white and manual for about 1yr which i sold about 1.5yrs ago to buy my dream car, a fk8 civic type R and guess what... after owning the type R for 1.5yrs i have now sold it to go back to a swift sport but the zc33s latest model in white and manual. Just patiently waiting for it to be ready next week to go collect it. I loved the type R its an amazing car but im real world conditions, i dont need 320hp, brembos, 20inch wheels, recaros, and then theres maintenance, running costs, insurance, parts you name it... the swift sport does everything in a more pocket friendly way. Keeps a smile in your face when you drive it and the best part is that your bank acc loves it.

I own a red version of this and everything you said is 100% true! It's a gem of a car and very few people know it! It's simply hilarious fun, low maintenance and it has four doors so it's family friendly too. Only negative is that the boot is relatively small so you need to be innovative when you have your family with you on long trips... Driving down twisty B roads is such a hoot and the engine note is like a symphony, very smooth and high revving. It's a fun pocket rocket! I am glad we have these around.

Very nice and detailed review, great job mate! I've bought this car in Pearl White new in May 2013, and it's still in my garage! To be honest, I hope to keep my SSS for a long time yet! In these 9 years of ownership, I've done some mods: muffler and center pipe from Ragazzon, a throttle controller and Powerflex camberbolts (-1.7°). Now the car is much more fun than stock, it sounds better, it's far more responsive to throttle inputs and handles fantastic! Next step will be Bilstein coilovers and braided brake lines. Good luck with your channel! Greetings from Italy!! 👋

Absolutely couldn't agree more. Listening to you reflects my own opinion of the Swift Sport. I owned the same model as the one reviewed for 2 years and 21K miles. I currently own the later turbocharged 1.4 litre Swift Sport (non-hybrid). Now at 2.5 years and 19K miles. Both cars are tremendously good cars to own and drive. They are absolutely as you've described, grab them by the scruff of the neck and chuck them in hard to a corner or a roundabout - don't lift or brake. Just manage the grip throughout the turn. Or control the slide between axles by either applying more throttle or backing off a little. Many other performance cars are faster on the straights, but factor in a few tight and twisty corners - and the agile Swift Sport is tremendously quick. Like you've said - you can really carry speed in a Swift Sport. Many KZbin journalists describe them as 'warm hatches', but that is so far from the truth. These cars are most definitely hot hatches in the traditional sense. They might not have monster engines, but the way these cars can consume any stretch of tarmac, anywhere you like - proves to me that they definitely satisfy the criteria of a hot hatch - no shadow of doubt in my mind. It's not until you own one for an extended period of time do you eventually realise just how good the chassis is. Suzuki have done their homework for sure. Reliability - not one thing has ever gone wrong with either of them in 4.5 years of motoring. Not even a silly problem. Literally foot to the floor motoring with impeccable durability. PROVEN durability on the Nurburgring. Awesome little cars. Great review! Thanks.

@@workaccount2415 Hi mate, Thanks for watching and that's a very good question! As a 29 year old looking back at 17 year old me (or let's say me who hasn't had their first car yet anyway) I'd 10 times out of 10 recommend the Swift Sport first. That's not to say the NB MX-5 is a bad car at all, they're awesome but you want to be learning and improving your driving skill in a FWD car first. The Swift has such a fantastic chassis, is endlessly entertaining, super reliable, modern without rust, far FAR safer in an accident (And trust me, sadly crashes in first cars are surprisingly common), you can carry multiple mates around, decent boot and it's got lots of modern tech and nice touches. The Swift Sport taught me so much about car control literally 9 years into car ownership that previous cars didn't. The MX-5 that I've got (NC) is still brilliant but I don't feel like it's taught me as much and I also notice that vulnerability feeling when going quickly with the roof down. Also, 1 year into ownership I'm loving it still but finding the lack of practicality to be a real problem. I hope none of that is patronising mate, but honestly I remember thinking I was the best driver in the world when I started - I passed first time with 2 minors and all my passengers used to note that I was a better than average driver. I still had a crash 2 weeks later - not from being an idiot or even going quickly, just a mistake on a confusing junction. I was very glad I was in a safe car and not a 1998 Mazda MX-5 based on a 1989 Mk1 chassis underneath. Let me know what you go for :)

@@workaccount2415 I agree with what Petrol Poodle said. NB doesn't have traction control so could be tricky when you're learning. Personally the MX5 has taught me more than the swift but it's each to their own. Overall better off with the swift especially for practicality and it'll get slightly better mpg and cost far less in rust repair. Both very fun cars, hope you enjoy whatever you end up with!

@@petrolpoodle6617 Yes I do, I really enjoyed it even though it was only a short experience. But I think the best way to appreciate a car like the Swift Sport is by owning one and living with one. Only then can you really learn how good they are, how often you can have fun in them, how much speed you can carry in them, how good they are on British roads, how reliable and trusty worthy they are and crucially - as all hot hatches ought to - how to be a normal car when you're not going full potatoes. I had a related car, a 5-door, 3-cylinder, 1980s, badge-engineered Chevy based on the Japanese Suzuki Cultus, which, I marveled, had just a single leaf in its leaf springs! I owned an Ignis Sport, between 2007 and 2018. From 2018 to now I have owned this model of Swift Sport. I’ve done 130000 miles in these cars. Suzuki do make fantastic sporty cars. They are a great value used buy, low running costs, durable, low maintenance, versatile and fun to drive. In reality, it is very hard to find anything else that compares. I’ve used mine for commuting, days out, shopping trips and even on the race track; good at whatever you throw at it. These are far more than just a gateway car for someone looking to move to a 300hp hatch. I’d like to see a video about the Golf and Bimmer and how they drained your wallet. In Hong Kong we have some other selections of Japanese compact with a manual, Toyota Vitz (or Yaris), Honda Fit RS, Nissan Note Nismo S and of course the Swift Sport, thanks to parallel import of Japanese used cars. I think Swift Sport should be the best of the class as it gives the best chassis than its competitors. Vitz and Fit feel lighter but also lacking the rigidity of the ZC32S. You will need much modifications for the Toyotas and Hondas before they could reach the same ride quality. The only dis for Swift Sport here is the car license fee, which Vitz and Fit RS are in the lower class (engine capacity below 1500cc) and Swift Sport in the higher class (1500-2500cc) with £200 difference per year. Still, Swift Sport has the best C/P value among its class.

I am from India and sadly here the Sports version is not available for sale. And also the normal version that we receive here is the 3rd generation (currently) of the Swift and it is not that good as it used to be in the older generation (1st generation was fantastic). Personally my family own a 2nd generation Swift (diesel) and it is really fun to drive and fantastic around corners. And overall a great package. Great review by the way and hoping Suzuki keep on continuing this vehicle and make it even better and hope it will launch in India some day.

@@petrolpoodle6617 Oh Wow! Thank you for responding. Yes it is indeed. The new swift is performing good. But I said it as an enthusiastic perspective it is not good. 850 odd kgs Full of plastic 0 safety rating (NCAP - Indian version, cost cutting). In one of the crashes happened here with a bike car got damaged but bike had minor damage. Yes mine is also weak in terms of safety.

My wife bought a 15 plate ZC32 pearlescent White 5 door 19k miles in December. At the time I was driving a Megane RS 07 plate no issues suprisingly. I love the SSS so much I now own a 5 door boost blue. I don't miss the RS and I don't miss my Mk5 GTi or the 3 series before that because I can spend more time driving my Swift than fixing it. Brilliant cars and a great review. I rather like the fact that some people are clueless how good these are. Only issues I've encountered.. quirky vibration at idle but they all have that , sliding pins on brakes needed grease previous owner didn't maintain. Rear boot leak from pressure relief vent under light simple to replace no more water. Other than that built proof. Love em...

@@petrolpoodle6617 ah no MX-5 here. We have kids so impractical. But given the balance of scales between economy, usability, reliability, and all out fun you'll struggle to best a swift sport. My brother has n UP GTi remapped stage 1 to about 143/146 bhp. The swift can more than handle it If needs be but quite honestly it's not a drag racer it's not the car to buy if like the current trend you're obsessed with 0-60 or hyper hatch bhp. No if you want clean N/A fun with a nice notchy gear box and incredible chassis and suspension then the SSS is the one.and you might not loose your license as easily either. great review btw. I think like many owners it's hard to express the car you need to drive it hard for a week and then you know...

I've driven them all, from Bentley to Jaguar, Mercedes and Audi, BUT NOTHING has given me so much fun to drive and own as my 2012 3-door White Swift Sport which I bought back in November 2020, On long journeys I get out feeling just as refreshed as I started off, I have just covered close on 10,000 miles in this time, My wife and Parents absolutely love this little Pocket Rocket as much as I do. My car is now on 54,500 Miles from New, It spent much of it's earlier life on the Isle Of Wight !!!

I totally agree, Steve! For road driving my Swift Sport still possesses my favourite driving memories, driving it hard around the Brecon Beacons was like discovering I owned a rally car! I know what you mean about getting out of a long journey feeling fresh too - I once did 9 hours across Europe with 4 of us in the car and we all got out totally fine! It really is the greatest car for all sorts of budgets

Hey Petrol Poodle, I've hit the Subscribe button (I usually don't) but I really enjoyed your review. The wife and I have just bought a Swift Sport 2013 model and we can't wait to go pick it up. I love the honesty and it says alot that you've moved from BMW's and GTI's. The Swift is replacing our A3 2.0 TDI 2door (which was my little pocket rocket) so I'm assuming the Swift will be a good replacement.

@@epicchannel7647 Same here 2011 model fiat diesel engine Amazing , its actually better than the petrol . The extra weight of the diesel engine, and that grunt past 2000 rpm , even 1800 + gives you that turbo boost. The petrol one you have to review it past 3-4000 rpm. I drive it around the hills , it just loves the curves . It puts the biggest smile on my face .
