Back in the 70s and 80s when I was but a lad, the bearings were loose needles which you had to pack in place with grease. Hammering together was not an option as it would dislodge and smash the needles. We used a vice or sometimes a press to reassemble the UJ. If the vibration wasn't due to wheel imbalance sometimes the centre bearing could be out of alignment. Try to fit it in the same place as it was originally or back off the mounting bolts slightly and do a short test drive to let it find its centred position (thrashing it on a wheel free ramp and undoing/tightening the centre bearing mounting bolts works but is not health and safety friendly). Failing that try fitting jubilee style hose clamps to the propshaft and rotate them around so the offset weight of the tightening screw provides a counterweight to the unbalance. Old guys rule. 🙂

Thanks a lot for your great video. The lowest price for a "Rebuilt" Driving Shaft was 671 $ (CAD) here in my country... I save 400$ by changing the U-joints by myself and It was very simple after vewing your video. No driving shaft balancing for me... Thanks again volvosweden !!

I always put the new u-joint in the freezer for a couple hours, before install. They usually slide right in, with a c-clamp and a socket. The possibility of cracking the cups or yoke is greatly reduced this way.

To remove rust, there is a much simpler way: put them submerged in vinegar and add some tablespoons of salt to it and let it be for a night and then rinse it off. All rust is gone

My only advice is use a vice to hold the yokes across while driving the joints in and out less likely to bend them in or crack them

Had a similar issue a few months ago. Had the u-joints replaced and the driveshaft rebalanced. Works like a charm now. It should be noted that the car will drive perfectly fine without the driveshaft in place while it gets repaired.

Did they balance the shaft on or off the vehicle? Did they remove an install for you? And how much did it cost? Thx in advance.

+volvosweden The job was done with the driveshaft off the car. It was then sent to a machine shop that specializes in this type of work around here. If I recall, they replaced all u joints (front and back) and balanced it for $300 CAD. No vibrations or any kind of noise since then.

Good job! Cutting off the spider makes better sense than trying to unstake as I did. For the vibration after re-installation it is often corrected just by unbolting the flanges and rotating a 1/4 or 1/2 turn. Alternatively use a marker before removal? :)

@@volvosweden Greetings from Chicago. I have the same car (same color too!) only it is a 2011 model with ~125K miles so it's in similar condition as yours when you did that video (7 years ago). Mine recently developed a noticeable vibration around 66-68 mph which becomes uncomfortable at around mid 70s (anything 80s or more and the car feels like it's gonna come apart). Mechanic suspects a bad driveshaft. My car uses a different part number than yours, which is actually slightly more expensive. Every mechanic I asked refuses to try our approach and wants to replace the entire driveshaft including the center bearing which is a job close to $$1,000. I am tempted to try what you did. Did you ever fix the post-repair vibration and what was causing it? Thanks for posting these videos, you have helped all of us SX4 owners a lot!!! Спасибо! Edit: I was reading the other comments and just realized you have sold your SX4. I will drive mine until the repair it needs exceeds its current value so I am hoping for at least another 75K miles.

Do not ever do that! I tell you as an expert. There are a lot of gross mistakes, from which this cardan will "kolbasit" and as a result will collapse. 1.Working with a sandpaper coring, damaged the surface of the "ears", from which the cup will soon rotate in its place. 2. The cross does not fit in size, it is shorter. The master inserted the stoppers, but they did not reach the stop. During the work, the cups will move to the stop. And the cross will move from side to side about 2 mm. And this is a disaster for the cardan. 3. And the last. Even if everything was correctly observed, in any case, you need to make a balance.

you guys should try to align the joint bushings properly by using a dial indicator on the mounted shaft to reduce the run out. i was cringing already when i saw the OP hammering in the bushings as the lateral placement of the center of the cross joint could be off by tenth of inches easily (as there obviously is no flange on the bushing or axle joint for defined placement), and any effort of balancing the shaft might be in vain then anyway.
@yokleu7570
@yokleu7570 7 жыл бұрын
Stuart Reid you can try put 2or3 clamp on the shaft then tune the clamps around (like balance you tires) at different position drive around to find out where is the less vibration positions , I did this on my F-150 back 70' we are poor kid ,if you have money take to a truck shop they will do it for you ,

Whooo boy, you need to go to school first because a few things were not done the best way like sanding the stakes off. You CAN'T touch where the u joint cap goes because then you change the ID and it will make the cap loose. I just did the rear shaft on my '06 AND DON'T THINK YOU CAN BALANCE THE DRIVESHAFT AFTER ! No one will touch it because the u joints are not perfectly symetrical in the yoke.
