Great review.In Febuary 2021 I treated myself to a black V-strom 650 XT for my 65th birthday,it is the 25th bike I,v owned since I bought my first Honda in 1972.I,v had everything from 50cc up to 1300cc this is my second Strom and I love them both.Last year I spent a month touring Spain and Portugal on the XT and I,m heading back there again in September.Also for my 66th birthday I got a Garmin Zumo xt like yours,cant wait to really test in out later in the year

Thanks Pat that's awesome glad you enjoyed the review :) that sounds like you've had some awesome trips! I've found the Zumo XT to be brilliant so far excellent bit of kit I like how it shows what lane to be in at junctions that's so helpful and the sidebar is great for live traffic when it's linked to the phone I've been running the voice instructions to my sena headset as well.

I drove most of the motorbikes available and if someone rides a lot, there's nothing better than a mid-range Japanese motorcycle. Weight, agility, reliability, versatility. Yamaha Tracer 7GT, Suzuki Vstrom 650 XT, Kawasaki Versys 650 absolutely perfect motorbikes for 90% of users.

Good honest review. Well.done. After spending 20 years on litre plus bikes I took a punt on the wee 650 and am mighty impressed. I also own a 2021 1050 XT so have the best of both worlds but there is something really appealing about the 650. It is just an honest, simple lovely wee bike.

Thanks Johnny still getting used to being on camera and stuff always more I wish I'd covered but like doing it off the cuff. Yep I think the Suzukis really nail that fun functionality a real no thrills bike itl be interesting to see if some of the goodies from the 1050 filter down onto the 650 certainly can't beat the flexibility of having both! I've not had a go on the 1050 yet but looks a cracking package.

I'm on my 4th WeeStrom and have only ridden in 65 countries of full-time riding over the past 12 years, but totally agree with you. My '18 in yellow also is not the best at anything, but is overall great at everything. I also agree that I'd like electronic cruise to replace my Kaoko manual cruise control. I also agree about smaller ADV bikes needed as my next trip is to ride the Stans.

Totally agree with you. My 2019 XT 650 is just perfect for me as I don’t go on 2000 mile tours every month and generally ride locally. God knows why people need a 1250 GS to trundle around locally and go to the pub on sunny days! Total overkill - its just bravado really. I’m 6”3’ and regularly ride 2 up no probs on the XT - more than enough power for the real world.

Thanks for the comment :) yep the Stroms got more than enough power that's for sure I still think it's the sweet spot engine wise sound performance etc for on the road. Norton had it right in the 60s in my opinion my Vstrom actually went last week can't argue with the residuals only lost about 400 quid after tripping the miles an that was selling it into a dealer to. Just bought two 390 adventure ktms for dad and I waiting on them being prepped at the moment so putting my money where my mouth is so to speak with lighter bikes :)

Couldn't agree more 240 Z. I fail to understand why so many people worship at the altar of the Beluga Whale known as the BMW1250GS I bought my 650 Strom after really thinking through what I REALLY wanted from a bike. The 650 Strom is good for 95+% of all journey's I make. Better than any other bike I can think of, and light enough it is never an issue to lug around. I now laugh at the GS riders when I see them risking a hernia to get their bikes 'ready for the off'

Excellent review. Very honest and transparent. Amazing all round machine, but agree with the weight issues. Still far to heavy for a lot of us mere mortals. I was looking for the perfect tourer , ended up with the KTM890 Duke in which I’ve added side and rear bags. 115 hp and 40kg less in weight. It’s the best bike I’ve ever owned for the riding I do. Now covered over 15,000km in less then 12 months of ownership. It’s the only bike I’ve owned where if I’m not riding it , I’m thinking about riding it ☺️. Ride safe and keep up the great reviews 👍

Ive just put a deposit on a 650 xt 2025 model. This is my 3rd 650 Strom. Was so close to buying the 800 RE but the 650 got me. My final thoughts apart from the devil you know thing was 650 is enough power, proven motor that's been upgraded with tweaks now n again. And the small lighter weight . Then the saving made on purchase cost will completely cover any extras. With crash bars and heated grips fitted as extra, on road $14,440. Australia.

Thanks mate I actually made a slight mistake from a spec sheet should have checked the official site before 216kg in total a good exhaust would probably get it down closer to the 200kg madk :) still not bad though in comparison some of the wd ww2 bikes are 176-186kg with 10-15hp. The flat tanker is 265 lbs and 4.9hp totally transformed my opinions on bikes and weight. I'm still really curious about the Himalayan and keep really thinking about some of the lighter Japanese singles but it's all trade off for the highway performance.

I honestly can't fault my VStrom 650. As I said on ABR forum I rode a Triumph Tiger Sport 660 a couple of weeks ago and it was a bit of a disappointment after all the glowing reviews, then I got back onto the VStrom and it was like sitting in my favourite armchair again. Lots of miles planned for this year. As for cruise control.... I have no need of one as I rarely use the motorways, although I may change my mind if I ever make the trip to Norway.
@adaptableadventurerider

Thanks for taking the time to comment on here as well Neil I think the comments could be a good resource for people comparing similar bikes for anyone looking at the VStrom. That's exactly how I feel with mine I had quite a bad wrist injury so sometimes it can ache a bit which is why I miss the cruise but then it comes with Fly By Wire which I couldn't stand on the 1200gsa so it's all swings and roundabouts :) I'm hoping to do Norway next year all being well n will most likely be using the V Strom an a 2nd might be coming into my garage for dad.

Great video, subbed. I have a 2020 650XT that I went to Germany for, 16k (KM) on the clock, saved a good bit versus buying in Ireland (even with ferries etc) and I got a good spin home! I've done some of those offroad upgrades you are thinking about - if you go on Strom Trooper new member introductions you'll see photos & discussion. cosmo accessories in Greece is where I got most of the protection stuff. Next (& last main) thing I have to do is tyres, I've the machine and balancer ordered, want to do it myself as have a few bikes and it makes sense to be able to swap out pure road vs 50/50 without dropping cash every time. Haven't yet concluded on which 50/50 tyres but will do in next couple of weeks - am going to ABR Festival end of June. Longer term I'll think about front fork upgrades whether that's progressive spring, emulations, intiminators & what not (I don't know much about the whole area as yet - and its not an issue until I start going offroad & maybe I'll say for what I'm doing its not worth the hassle). Overall - I love the bike, great onroad for long trips, or just the 35 min commute to work. I'm aware it (or moreso I) will have limitations offroad, but I don't see myself doing v technical stuff with it, its a bit big and heavy for all that - I've an old XR250 if I really want to 'go there' - but gravel roads, open fields, non technical single track - I think it'll do all that. 'Grumbles' - I find it a bit top heavy, esp with a full tank of petrol, would need to be wary of off camber situations - but that's more rider awareness & skill than a bike fault as such. I guess cruise control would be nice to have but.... no issues so far. ABS is not switchable, but you can (apparently) take out a fuse, or pop it on centrestand and get it to 'error out' - so a bit fiddly, most consensus is being able to turn off rear ABS for downhill offroad would be good. Don't see myself installing a DIY switch any time soon. There was a custom screen and heated grips on it already so all good there. Other bikes I'm interested in - Africa Twin (not DCT) would be the 'motherlode' as far as I'd be concerned - I'll prob never get it - but it appeals to me more than the universally accepted motherlode of the GS1250. The 300 Rally as basically a modernised XR250, a bit more road friendly, well able for what I'd do offroad (or at least after some suspension upgrade). GSX-S 1000 GT, a pure tourer but looks fun. Competitors - Tenere 700, maybe looks a bit more aggressive, probably better off road, but if like most they are mainly used on-road I'm not convinced it'd be as comfy as 650. KLR650 - would that even be considered in the same class?, Spite from Yammie Noob reviewing it lately, sounds not good. Himalayan?? - v. cheap, and lighter, but prob more a competitor to Rally 300, wouldn't have the motorway legs to compare with VStrom. You've already covered off the bigger bikes GS 1250 etc., again not directly comparable. Honda CB500X - I guess a slightly undercooked version of the 650XT but a definite option if on an A2 licence, and I guess the same general idea as the do anything/go anywhere vibe of the VStrom. Deliriously happy so far, long may it continue.

Hi mate firstly I just wanna say thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed review on yours and your thoughts I'm sure itl help lots of other people :) I'll check that out! Thanks for the sub to! My channels only tiny really with focusing on the Nortons mainly in the past. Yep its a tricky one isn't it with regards to the Africa Twin check out Chris Scott's website the legend who did the adventure bike handbook. He's just ran a Africa Twin an got rid of it explains why on his site. That's handy having the xr250! It's tricky isn't it to find something that does the compromise that the Vstrom does so well. I really love the idea or a Himalayan every time I get my leg over one in a dealer I love it but the weight is pretty much the same as the 650xt. Hopefully should be able to film my follow up video over the weekend and get it up on Monday very excited to get my thoughts up and get everyone's take and input on what I'm leaning towards for the Iceland Trip :) If you look at the gsx1000s make sure you test ride my dads eldest bro had one for a while very snatchy throttle.
@balladofbalfe8914
@balladofbalfe8914 2 жыл бұрын
@@adaptableadventurerider I'm pretty sure the Himalayan is a bit lighter - quick google says 30kg wet (192 vs 220), and still about 10kg dry, but from what I can see you wouldn't want to be on a motorway for more than 30 mins on a Himalayan. The GSX I mentioned is the brand new GT model, all the reviewers are raving about it, so it sounds like throttle not an issue. Anyways, a bit 'leftfield' of the whole adventure bike scene, but one can dream. 🙂 I'll definitely check out that AT conversation - cheers! 👍

@@balladofbalfe8914 np :) yep I think they are about 200kg wet with abs on the himmy seen a few different things mentioned itl be interesting to see what they end up doing with the new 450 as that'd rumoured to have a 40hp liquid cooled engine. It's a shame though as it sounds like they are dropping the long stroke engine. One thing I love from my Norton singles is a good long stroke engine. Nathan Millward's channel is worth checking out if you havnt seen it yet some very interesting stuff.

I just bought one as my winter bike but suspect it may become my favourite ride. It is an antidote to unnecessarily complex expensive bikes which are getting ever more powerful, relatively shorter lived and for many, more unreliable fashion toys. The Vstrom epitomises everything a dependable well designed bike should be. Comfortable, economical, dependable, adequately powerful but ok not quick. Suspension on mine is brilliant as is seating position and hand protection. It’s still heavy, lets be honest. 213kg for a middleweight is not light. It compares well against the larger adv bikes though. The weakness in design is the stator and rectifier/regulator. Mine is a low miles 2006 model. It broke down first ride as the rectifier fried itself. Luckily aftermarket ones are cheap but the Chinese cheapy stators I would guess cannot be relied on for long. Still, other better made alternatives are available way cheaper than oem. Great bikes which will become very sought after.

I Havnt tried a nc750x yet. A few friends of mine have Africa Twins are really rate them as awesome bikes it's great to see what everyone's using I've still got my fireblade so do like Hondas. I loved the Idea of the Mt series of Yam engines but after the f800gs I didn't fancy another modern parallel twin so decided to try a Vstrom. I'm glad you liked that bit as I really wanted to stress everyone's tastes are different an one bike won't suit everyone I think alot of the paid or sponsored reviews tend to miss that point. In a way its a bit like the Himalayan I know it's an itch I'll want to scratch at some point but hopefully when I do I'll be in a position to retain the Vstrom :) until then it's the Vstrom life for me! It's been a fascinating experience riding the 1927 Norton 16H in the recent videos. 4.9hp and 252 lbs I guess you could say it caused an Epiphany.

I was going to sub to the channel, but I realized you sold the DL. I never seen such a positive review about any bike, then you unload it. Well, I had a '17 650, then bought a Z900, then a Z900RS and missed the DL so much, I just picked up a black and blue 650 Adventure. I don't ride Chinese made KTM's.

@@adaptableadventurerider I stand corrected about China, although the 890 will be made in Communist China. It does matter where your bike is made. I had 3 Nortons in the past. A lot of fun, but maintenance intensive. Japanese quality stands above all other manufacturers. I've had over 50 bikes, including a KTM 1290 SA and fun as well, but mine was in the shop more than on the road. Ride safe.

Glad I found this video, great insight! I'm looking to move from a car to a motorcycle with an A2 license soon. This V Strom 650 ticks all the boxes I've set when looking at a potential first bike. I'd obviously need to get it fitted with a kit to limit at 47BHP. Would you recommend this as a first bike? Or is there a similar bike to this that you would recommend instead? Ta :)

Hi thanks for the comment glad it's been of help! I would recommend it with your A2 licence my first bike was a RS125 to a K9 GSXR 600 with a 33bhp Suzuki ecu on it after passing my test we used to have to just wait 2 years before full power. I think the VStrom would be great check the insurance etc though! I think suzuki might do a ecu restriction for them which keeps the fueling spot on worth asking your local Suzuki dealer and its always down to personal preference as to what bike you like 👍 you could always look at Nathan Millward's Dorothy's Speed shop. @nathanthepostman youtube channel. He does a2 license days with some of the other options Himalayan, CRF300 Rally etc. I've had a real range of motorcycles as you will see from some of the other videos on the Channel an the VStrom is In my top 3 bikes the other two are Nortons. People have gone round the world on the V-Strom they do have limitations for off road but from an on road touring and overland perspective they are good to grow with. I've currently got my eyes on the Rally and the Himalayan as a 2nd modern ADV bike but as with any bike they have there compromises and limitations :) hope this helps and any questions feel free to ask. Just remember the throttle goes both ways and always look where you want to go when in corners etc and your body n bike will follow best advice I could give you :) Steph Jeavons is also worth checking out I saw her company on instagram taking some people off road that hadn't ridden a motorbike before :)

Norton Rider, has your 650 used any oil? My 2022 650 seems to be using a bit of oil. Dropped from the full mark to midway between the lines between the 600 mile service and 1500 miles. Although only 150ml or so seems excessive. Yours used anything?

I soon got used to having it mounted on the bars on the vstrom 650xt :) an have done the same on the 1150, its a shame they didn't fit them with an over the clock substantial bar like the later beemers have an the 300 rally. Good luck with the 650 :) I still miss mine! They are a different thing entirely to the Beemers but great in there own right worth a test ride which id always recommend :)

Totally do agree with this Michael if you check out my two latest videos my why gs video and the part 1 of my why Norton 650ss it's quite polarising just how different both bikes are and have a different place in why I like them and have them both. The main reason I like cruise now is due to a none bike related injury I sustained and on a really long trip it just takes the pressure off a bit. I really do prefer riding the Nortons in a crazy way to anything else for the stripped back nature of the bike it's raw engaging and appealing, I totally agree with what you said about Suzuki and Japanese quality I had recent experience of two ktms which we ended up rejecting at under 300 miles on both bikes which was an eye opener hence going for the GS this game round. It's interesting DJ isn't it how different bikes suit us all which was something I tried to stress at the end and open a discours on as its great to get others takes like yourself especially riders not in the UK as its cool to see what different preferences everyone has. People really need to test ride ontop of watching KZbin reviews because so many factors can enter in personally after a list of 25 bikes including Superbikes. The 1000xt f800gs and a r1200gsa TE full spec 2014. It's in my top 3 bikes (the other two are Nortons) I guess it all comes down to how and where you ride. I find I don't need the engine speed as I stick within the speed limits so its 71HP is plenty and I also ride a 4.9hp 1927 Norton which makes great progress. Not found the 650 lacking at all compared to the GSA that I sold maybe the loss of cruise as I mentioned but then the fueling is spot on with the 650XT and I find it holds its weight well. Admitidly I've not had a KTM yet so maybe they are better than both the Vstrom and the big Beemers. Power and weight wise though compared to a 1150GSA there's only about 14 Hp diference an the VStrom is lighter than the 1150 by about 42kg dependant on what website you pull specs from. My GSA was a 2014 full spec 1200 TE so quite a big of difference in that HP Wise. The best change I made to the Vstrom was the puig screen absolutely transformed comfort levels from when I rode it back from the dealers down south after the Scotland trip I got home after 600 miles then walked to the shop n had no aches or pains n felt very fresh as though I could do it again. On the other hand the 1000 didn't suit my body shape arm length etc. On paper the VStrom is 71 HP an 62NM 790 Adventure 95HP 88NM So not a huge amount in it Power an weight wise but the torque is quite different with the CC difference which is something people never focus on sure a good exhaust an map would bring the 650 up a bit although there is a difference in CC I've always said when I used to ride superbikes 750 is one of the sweetest CC's. I'm actually considering going down to a single cylinder ADV in addition to the VStrom for some trips I'm planning next. Another factor as you say Is price my gsa cost me 17k cash and lost 6k in the time I had it and was impossible to keep without the extended warranty I owned that for a 3 year period in comparison I picked my Vstrom up 9 months old for 6,200 so for the depreciation on the GSA I could have bought a Vstrom outright ridden it into the ground n still had 11k in the bank. On top of that I'm getting 20mpg more than I saw on the two litre adv bikes at 68mpg worked it out over 450 miles on receipts on part of my Scotland day trip. Servicing wise I can do myself to as the part costs is alot better than the beemer. My other most recent Suzuki I had was a 1981 GSX 750Et which was highly reliable an the new owner has put a load on n my dads 750 hasn't given a ounce of trouble for the 13 years he's had it. I'm very curious to try a KTM at some point but most likely a 690 or the Husky 701. Out of interest what sort of mpg are you getting out of the 790 ? Always interesting to speak to owners in comparison to paid reviews or articles.

Great little engine but that model vstrom is so bloody ugly I couldn't have it around, I think the 1050xt looks better and the extra punch is probably worth the extra fuel it would use etc plus it's more expensive to buy in the first place I know. Africa Twin or NT1100 might be worth a try. subbed.

@adaptableadventurerider 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Road Warrior and thanks for the sub! I actually quite like the looks I do agree though Suzuki could do with updating the looks a bit Is love the over the clock nav bar that the 1050xt has :) I had the 2017 1000xt and prefer the 650 but I'm not tearing around everywhere more mpg for me currently = more riding. I was actually reading about Chris Scott's Africa Twin that was very interesting and why he got rid of it for his trips. It's really tricky finding the right compromise as I think the perfect RTW/Travel overland bike hasn't been made yet. I'd love to see them loose some weight as 216kg still feels pretty heavy in my mind but then it's much lighter than the 1200gsa te 2014 I had and the 1000xt. Really interesting learning everyone else's opinions.
