I took out both the Suzuki V Strom 650 XT and Suzuki V Strom 1050XT model for back to back test rides to see which one is better. I wanted to find out if the more expensive and upgraded V Strom 1050XT worth the money over the 650?

Thanks for the review. I own a Triumph Tiger 800 XR in India and due to the warm weather here and huge traffic in most cities, I find the engine heat especially when the radiator fan starts a big bother. I tried the Suzuki V-strom 650 and on a bright sunny day I found it way more better from the engine heat standpoint. It does not have the insane power thrill of the Tiger but the V-strom has enough for both city as well as quick overtaking on highways.

Waiting for delivery of my 650xt in blue! Can’t wait. Test rode on a couple of weeks back and was amazed how nice it was. I’ve had far bigger bikes but I’m no speed freak anymore and just want one do-it-all bike. This will fit the bill nicely! 1000 looks nice but can’t justify the extra 2k currently. Nice comparison. Thanks

Picked up a brand new 2018 650xt two years ago. Put down 14,000km since that September and still the Strom runs the exact same as the day I bought her. Taken her on a few lomg trips once out to the Maritimes where I had ridden the bike for 24 hours straight it is so comfortable (coming off a ninja this bike is so comfortable). The 1050 is an amazing bike too but it gets terrible gas mileage compared to the 650 so unless you have plans on going 2 up it's probably better to get the 650 it will do about everything the 1050 does but more effectively. A guy near me sold his 2014 it has 135,000km on it so if you change the oil the twin will run forever.

@@samiam5326 ninja was very uncomfortable it was a 2009. Very reliable bike but not so much comfort wise. I can't say anything about the ninja 1000sx because I have never sat on it but every Suzuki I ever sat on was more comfortable than every Kawasaki I sat on and I have ridden Kawi's, Yamaha's, Suzuki, Harley's and the Strom was the most comfortable one. Usually sport touring is much more upright position than the pure sports and worst comes to worse you just buy some risers for the handlebars bring them up a inch or 2 so you can sit as straight as possible.

I'm a VStrom fan. Had the 2003 1000. Rode it back to back with a similar vintage 650 - only 15kg difference back then, but it felt like 30kg+. New weight difference is 30kg, so can only imagine what that feels like. My 1000 was super hard work in the sand-dunes though, and always thought if I could overcome my ego's need to have the 1000, the 650 would have been better - the 650 was almost as quick around a racetrack too. Rode a 2010 VStrom1000 and was pretty disappointed, it was really a sit-up sportsbike and couldn't even handle road bumps and imperfections, let-alone proper off-road. I lOVE the look of the new 1000 and that would be a factor. We all want to look cool on our bikes - Think I like the red/orange one. When I win Lotto tonight, the VStrom will still get a test ride along with Tiger, Africa Twin, 790, T7...(Not the BMW though - way too unreliable) etc. Thanks for your vid mate, and good on you for making a decision. Post a vid when you've made your purchase. Cheers Campbell :)

Hi Campbell , thanks for the comment. I gotta admit a bit of loose gravel track is about as far as I’ve taken the Stroms but I can see your point. Don’t think I’d fancy the weight for serious off-roading. I’d just grab a light 250 or similar as my skills aren’t up to anything bigger off-road. Well when you win the lotto tonight just buy them all 😉

I have the 2020 650 XT in blue and have ridden the 1050XT as a courtesy bike while mine was having its first service. I have to admit that I like the engine of the 1050, but found the extra weight unwelcome as I have to reverse it out of the garage. I thought I would find the extra seat height of the 1050 a bit disconcerting, but surprisingly I didn't. On reflection I don't need to the 1050XT due to the extra fuel costs, the additional weight, the complexity of the electronics, which I feel is just more hassle to fix if it goes wrong and the use to which I put my bike. Therefore the 650XT is the better bike for me. However I found that I had to fit the 20mm lower seat which made the difference between "I'm not sure about this" and "yes that's fine" with the seat height... I also find the 650XT to get pushed sideways by winds when sitting at lights. If there is one major dislike with the 650, it is the standard of finish. I found the paint had flaked off in one place and the application was a bit suspect in other places underneath the fuel tank... Since these are painted by robot that would be down to both the settings and the quality control not being up to scratch..... It is a shame that The 650XT is a fine bike to ride..... but then partly ruined by a slapdash approach to quality control....

Great review. I bought the exact same one a year ago - yellow 1050 XT - and I love it! This is my first bike so a little bit overwhelming at low speed (the weight of the bike can be felt around town and when parking) and also in sinuous mountain road, where I am not able to stay on par with my friends (not ready for the Tail of the Dragon yet!🐉🐲), but that is probably due to me being a beginner more than the bike itself… Overall I enjoy it, the power is there and the torque is just great! If it's only "almost as good" as the 2013 strom-650 I had from new until late 2018, then it's a great bike. I did 27,000 kilometres (about 17,000 miles) over 5 years and it gave me an average of 25 kilometre/litre and easily 30 KPL on the motorway. That's 84.5 miles per UK gallon on the motorway. If only Suzuki had a DCT gearbox for this, they would steal customers from the Honda NC750 dealers at a frightening rate.

It's more involving if you want to ride fast but incredibly relaxing on longer trips. I had a 2013 Adventure 650 and now a 2018 1000XT. The only thing in my opinion the 650 offers that was more favorable is a smoother engine feel but the 1000 is way better in every other way including the suspension, raw power, slipper clutch, hydraulic clutch and cruising on pavement at high speed. Once you have grown accustomed to the 1000 torque and roll-on passing power it would be very difficult to step back to the 650. It is not necessary in most instances, but when you downshift to 5th gear on 1000 at 50+ mph and hit the throttle to pass it is like launching out of a small cannon and you can pass any vehicle like they are standing still and a trip to 90+ mph happens in no time. I perceive most individuals who forgo the 1000 in favor of the 650 concoct elaborate excuses to justify this decision. It is most likely for financial or insurance reasons and often unwilling to openly admit this to save face. C'mon people those are legit reasons so just admit it cause it really doesnt matter.

I average 71mpg on my 650 V-strom, but then I do actually use 6th gear. You should try it. If you are not going to take the bike off road, and to be honest it really isn't meant to do anything more ambtious than a well established, gravelled track, then I would save some money and buy the basic bike, not the XT. I quite like the way the air flow over the screen hits the top of my helmet, it provides some cooling air through the vent on my Shoei. However, in rain, the water collects on the screen and is then forced over the top by the air pressure, and big globules of water hit you. It really needs angled tyre valves as it is a pain to put air in the tyres.
@PhotoNMoto
@PhotoNMoto 4 жыл бұрын
I had angled valves on my Duke 790 and agree they’re useful. Simple and cheap to implement, I’d like to see them on more bikes. 71mpg I can believe if riding relatively sensibly. Riding that way I’m getting just over 60mpg on the 1050xt. I agree about buying the base model if your main concern is budget and bang for buck as mods would be more useful than the stock XT parts. However I do prefer the look of the XT.

I live in the US and hope to live and travel on the bike FullTime in 2021, tent camping, BunkABiker, cabin, etc. and possibly pulling a SherpaX trailer for my gear since I will be traveling with no “home base”. I envision 80-20 riding, backroads, two lane highways (avoiding freeway/interstate riding) and some dirt/gravel fire roads. I don’t need to go fast, no desire to speed across the country and no need to cover long distances each day and hope to spend 2-3 days at certain locations along the way. I’ll also be traveling solo 85-95% of the time. With all that said, in your experienced opinion, which would be the better bike, 650 or 1050? I paid under $10K USD for my 2018 1000 XT in fall 2018. Now the 1050 XT even in 2021 is priced over $3K more for nearest XT equivalent and few local dealers are stocking them. I dont think Suzuki has sold too many as they are now over-priced relative to the market. For that kind of money the power needed to be increased to be more competitive with other bikes and/or have other features like quick shifter. Other than cruise control the other minimal feature enhancements in combination simply dont justify the higher premium price versus the prior model.
@PhotoNMoto
@PhotoNMoto 3 жыл бұрын
I guess that depends on the pricing in the local market. Over here in the Philippines it’s overpriced but in the U.K. it’s still a good bit cheaper than the likes of GS’ , KTM 1290 Africa Twin and Triumph Tigers but yes the older models are even better value.

Good review. I think I am going to pursue a 1050. The 2023 Dual Explorer adds a 21" front wheel, off-road rider mode, rear ABS shutoff, connected breaking, improved suspension travel and ground clearance, quick shifter, colour TFT display, improved cruise control, panier cases, and some other stuff. It is pricier, and as it is new, the massive discounts on unsold VSTROMS are unlikely to be available (you can still buy brand new 2019 models in Canada in the year 2022 and negotiate to get them for a song). Any thoughts about the 2023 1050 DE? Do you think it would be worth the extra money? Financially, it is up in 850 GSA/Tiger 900 Explorer territory, but not as well equipped. Does Suzuki's legendary reliability make it worth it?

I’ve actually just been looking at these today. Unless you’re actually going to be off-roading then I’d have thought the 19inch front tyre on the older models would be better. I never felt the older models really lacking anything. I’ve since had an Africa Twin and none of the gadgets mean a thing to me to be honest. I wouldn’t pay extra for them. Comfort, reliability and a nice engine are top of the list for me (both the V Strom and Africa Twin have brilliant engines).

You didn't consider the additional weight you will have when you have panniers and luggage onboard. With 650 you would have total weight close what 1050 is empty. So moving the 1050 fully loaded, could prove nightmare if you happen to take wrong turn and need to turn around in hard spot. 1050 look much more modern though, but you can buy almost 2 650's with that price. Nice review, thanks!

Thanks for the reviews and well done for not sitting on the fence, of course the 1050 is a better bike! I’ve got an 18, 1000 I like the updates on the new 1050 but Suzuki can keep the spoked wheels. I’ve read a few reports of customers requesting dealers switch the wheels from the base model (cast wheels) to the XT. I was interested in low speed throttle response - your report says it’s no problem which is good news, as you know the old 1000 is a bit of a pig under 3000 rpm. I won’t be buying it yet however, another 12 to 18 months when Suzuki start aggressively discounting or maybe pick up an ex demo and save 1000’s. By then you should also have a lot more third party manufacturers producing aftermarket products (airflow screens for example). Overall though, a good bike in orange and white 👍

Thanks for the comment Andrew. I e actually seen a demo model of the 1050xt going for £9899 with 200 ish miles on the clock so I’m sure next January there will be more. What was the issue people had with the spokes? Apart from being a pain to clean. Yeh throttle response was fine even in A mode which is the most reactive. It’s even smoother in B and C mode. Oh and I got orange and white. Thought I’d get bored with the yellow pretty quickly after the novelty wore off.

Triple B On the forums the main issue on the out going model was corrosion and time spent cleaning the wheels. Suzuki will consider replacement under warranty only once, some had their wheels relaced with stainless steel spokes about 150 - 200 per wheel. For me I just prefer the lower maintenance of a cast but appreciate no off road riding allowed then. Safe ride👍

Andrew Shore ah ok thanks for the heads up. I’ll probably cover in anti corrosion spray before winter and will keep an eye on them. I know the old 650 header piped sometimes suffered with corrosion. I know what you mean regarding cast wheels being easier on the maintenance. I don’t do enough off roading for the spoked wheels to be a factor , but the XT is better equipped in a lot of areas over the base model in this generation so went for it.

Triple B If you’re going over the bike with ACF 50, do underneath your tank, Suzuki don’t paint that area unbelievably on the Gen 3, I bet it’s just the same on the 1050. And watch out for corrosion forming on the discs near the ABS ring, the brakes look exactly the same. Another area of weakness is behind the front sprocket cover, corrosion can form on the clutch push rod pin happened on mine. I do all my own maintenance and these are the areas I’ve spotted so far.

I had a 1050 2022 for 6 months, great bike tech etc...but really didn't like the eletronic accelerator and the cruise control same side as the accelerator as well, wich was very jarky and too sensitive, in a high speed when you try to press the cruise control button it really feels unsafe, and the rate weight/power doesn't make sense...bike same category will have the same weight and about 40hp more...so I made a great deal trading my 1050 2022 for a 650 2023 xt, what a bless, agile, light and the power is more than enough...accelarator smooth and spot on, the weigh power ratio just perfect, even my wife felt the 650more comfortable...

Hi Matthew, yeh sorry about the camera angle on this one. It was a hectic morning test riding several bikes and I forgot to adjust it. I sold the 1000 before lockdown to free up cash. Nothing to do with the bike , I liked it. I test rode the 1050xt and liked it even more. The engine is more free revving and it turns in a bit quicker. I’m also a sucker for the new design. I’ve been keeping a close eye on the MPG. On a sensible ride sticking roughly to speed limits and not accelerating too hard I am seeing just over 60mpg.

It has LED lights but mechanically its pretty much the same bike. I’m a sucker for the new styling and I had the spare cash so for me I didn’t mind paying the extra but value wise the older 1000 is hard to beat.

Had a chance to sit on both... not ride though (its hard to find a dealer that will let you take a bike out for a spin in MA, USA). On paper, the 1050 has a bit more weight to it (9 lbs more) , though the 2018 strom 1000 felt a bit more top heavy.

@PhotoNMoto 4 жыл бұрын
franklin pereira I’d agree with the remarks about the weight. You don’t feel the extra weight at all when riding the 1050xt and don’t forget the seat height is adjustable too.

You keep complaining about the clutch point on that 1050 XT - good luck on adjusting these for the right "feel" - hydraulic clutches are tough for getting that "break-point" feel.

It was just too far out on the test bike. I adjusted it on mine and it was fine.

So I am in Houston in the US. I am looking for a bike that is exciting, capable of giving me a rush. Secondarily I would like minimal vibrations, decent over bumps, and some wind protection, and a throttle that is not snatchy or too abrupt. Have you ridden a bike that fits that criteria?

I'm 6'5" about 250 lbs. I have never ridden a motorcycle before and was seriously looking at the 650 for a fist bike. Would this be a good buy or should I look at another option?

Don’t think you could go wrong. As long as you’re sensible and pay attention to the road you will be fine.

I'm 6'4" 250 and love my V-strom650 with some mods. Lower pegs, controls moved forward, seat concepts tall seat and bar risers. Now it fits better than ANY OTHER BIKE. I know this because I can't stop trying them all out!

What do you think in my case? 185cm long, 60kg weight, looking for some bike for travels and v-strom looks perfectly, so hesitating between 650 or 1050. :) I guess it ends up in personal try out of both bikes. :-D

Yep definitely need a test ride or at least sit on them. You’d be fine with both at your height but you’ll know for sure when you ride them.

Hi, what is your height? Did you find 1050 too big of a bike or is it just the parking manuvers that let you know of it's weight?

The 650 is just easier to jump on and Go.....it's more carefree off-road..........1050cc is a BIG bike to bring off-road, most riders can't handle that......very little room for error.
