Are you sure you got the prices right? The V Strom 400USD over the Africa Tween? I don't know about the prices in USA but in Europe (Sweden) there is a 5000 eur difference between the two bikes. The V Strom XT is much much cheaper than the Africa Tween.

Precisely why I went with the Africa Twin Adv Sports DCT. With a msrp of around $ 17 thousand for the V-Storm, there was no way I would it over the Africa Twin Adv Sports, DCT. The ATAS is far more equipped than the Wee 1050. If we had the Euro price difference, I may have considered the Wee 1050.

I am starting to think the same. I was really looking at the V-Strom (both the 650 and 1050) for my trip through Central and South America, but watching reviews about the African Twin and it really is intriguing me. My main concern is that I really wanted a bike that it a great road touring bike, and the Honda with the 21" front wheel does feel a bit sluggish on the road. For what I keep hearing. Also, the V-Strom's seat lower to the ground, and I am 5'8", tall for a girl, but those bikes are not built for people my height. Even though after watching this video she makes me feel like a dumbass for even thinking that the Honda is too tall. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYCnaoGkicqpfpI Another bike that is really intriguing me and some claim it is better than the African Twin, is the KTM 790 Adventure. Specifically the R or the R Rally models. But with KTM's having issues with oil leaks and some other reliability issues, specially those bikes coming out of their new factory in China, KTM dealers being harder to find in some countries, and KTM's lousy warranty (which ONLY covers the engine, transmission, and rear swingarm), makes the Honda best suited for world traveling. But damn, KTM is doing some great stuff with their bikes. If they only tested their amazing innovations rigorously before pushing it out on their production bikes, lowered the price of their bikes a bit more, and fixed their oil leak issues, they could make the bike to beat. After all, they didn't win Dakar (the mother of all rally endurance racing) for like 19-20 years in the row purely out of luck. Until ironically a Honda beat them this year (2020). But what is impressive is them wining the Dakar Race that many years unbeaten. That is something that I do not see another manufacture do ever again. If you are not familiar with the Dakar race, here is a break down of it. "The Dakar Rally is not for the weak - roughly 9,000 kilometers (5,600 miles) of rocks, sand washes, dunes, desert roads, water crossings, wildlife and everything else in between makes it the ultimate test of man and machine. The event is held in January and is open to both amateurs and professionals. The rally is divided into 15 stages that one must ride (or drive) about 500 miles each day! Hundreds sign up but only a few will actually finish."

And possibly a wayyyyyyyyyy better bike than the new one... apart from the looks - I do like the new styling. The old bike makes similar power, but is 15kg lighter than the new one, doesn't have any stupid rider aides, has better (maybe) dual-purpose suspension, high exhausts, and will still smoke sportbikes on a windy road (in the right hands obviously). For all those complaining about the weight of adventure bikes just keep riding your dirt bikes. They are completely different animals the Gold standard for these type of bikes are the GS 1250 and KTM 1290 they are very heavy too. If you don't want to ride big bikes off road then don't, go dual sport or pure dirt bike they make those too.
@DMSparky
@DMSparky 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly unless you plan on crushing 1000KM days all the time the 1250’s and 1290’s are pretty pointless. The industry as a whole is shifting towards smaller bikes again. I have a Tenere 700 now and on 50/50 tires it’s still pretty unwieldy in the tight technical stuff. I’m not even sure why they bother putting dirt oriented tires on the big bikes.
@rhyswilliams254
@rhyswilliams254 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you Doug. When I take a long "explore America" trip of 6000 miles with as much "not too technical" dirt and gravel roads as I can find I take my R1200GS and have a great time in comfort. When I want to do some real dirt riding I haul my KTM 500exc out to the area in the back of my pickup and have a blast with it. Different bikes for different missions.
@haveaseatplease
@haveaseatplease 4 жыл бұрын
The Honda AT 1100 is not in the same weight class as the GS1250, nor of the KTM1290. As stated in the video, the base AT sits at 220 kg the base GS1250 sits at 250 kg. The base T700 sits at 206 kg. The chassis and suspension of the AT makes it superior for off-roading to everything in its class, and the one below and above it. It is the only big enduro bike (1000 cc and above) that has multiple open class enduro wins out of the box on its track record. It is also the only big enduro bike that is enjoyable off road for novice riders, the rest just don't have that feeling of being in control in the more technical oriented tracks.

My 1290 SAR can go anywhere my skill can take it. I also own an XR650R, so yes a proper off-road built bike is always preferable the looser things become. Regardless, anything with plates is likely going to be compromised when ridden in dirt (my XR included and it's objectively light). Every pound over 300 has a literal impact on the soft ground you're riding on, because physics.

both great. Key differentiator: AT has great ground clearance; Vstrom ground clearance sux and sux worse once a crash plate is installed. Vstrom excels in the corners with 19 inch front tire. AT 21 inch tire is not as good in the twisties on pavement. So, pick your preferred surface and the choice will become obvious....

I purchased a 2019 leftover Africa Twin manual tranny for 10,9. I kept the stock tires on for about 800 miles (first service) I then had a pair of Dunlop Trailmax Missions mounted. It was like night and day difference on dirt. To me, you can't really judge how the bike does off road with the OEM tires. Any bike will suck with OEM tires. For a true review, please mount dirt oriented tires for the off road part of the review. You see this over and over again, OEM tires on an adventure bike and the reviewer states that the bike doesn't really handle all that well off road. Duh!

That was the test I was waiting for. How times have changed, I remember the review from 2 years ago how Troy really liked the old Vstrom and called it a winner for the price of all big adventure bikes. I ride the 2019 Suzuki XT and I love it. I dont like how the new bike gained 15 kg compared to my old XT and tourque higher up since motor was great on the old one. So Suzuki should upgrade the chasis to keep weight dont how Honda did but they missed the opportunity to make more improvement for the 2020. And also not that I need it, where is a TFT screen? Kawasaki has it, Honda also and Suzuki again stayed behind. So I will just enjoy my 2019 XT because it has it all but the cruise control. Grettings from Slovenia.

I've ridden it in many different conditions, including some off road, and have been pleased with it. I'm not an off road guy, more of a sport bike rider who's aged out of sportbikes. The Strom has been stone axe reliable. The only thing I don't like is the 19" front wheel. I wish it were a 17" so I could have more tire choices. I've said much on my channel about the long term value of the V-Strom (I've got over 65,000 miles on mine and have detailed how well the engine components have held up over time), but at this new price with the Honda AT on the market, Suzuki is challenged as pointed out in this video. I'd be interested to know if the AT holds up as well over time...50,000 miles +.

As an owner of a 2020AT, I can say Car Play on the bike is awful. Love Car Play on my Insight, it's just not right on the bike. The touchscreen turns off if you're moving so instead you find yourself choosing options with buttons on the handlebar, which is kinda like entering text on your TV with the provided remote's arrow buttons. But you're on the freeway. Oh and it will only connect once or twice before refusing to work until you forget everything and set it up again. I run a quad lock case connected to a mirror mount and charge it off the bike's USB so the phone's display won't turn off. I'd bet an Android version would have the same problems, just use your phone, the interface is already set up for simplicity and ease of use, KISS!

Hey Guys! Thank you for doing this piece. I want to really like this new 'Strom, as I do prefer the basic look of the 'Strom over the AT, but... the price point doesn't make sense to me. There is nothing to suggest this bike is worth that kind of money. The strength of the Suzuki has always been the value proposition the bikes bring. But they have taken that away, and now I don't see the need to even consider it. At least, these are my initial thoughts with no seat time. In all honesty I think something like a Tiger 900 Rally is more appealing to me. Or the New GS 850, if you dare go down the BMW Rabbit hole, which frankly I'd rather not. But like you guys say, if you HAD to spend your own money on one of these two, I would buy the Africa Twin. Thanks again!

Yes, tires and a off road gear-set will change the characteristics of both bikes. Drop some air pressure in the tires will definitely help the bikes feel planted too the trails... Caution too how much pressure you can drop incase a person hits a bolder on the edge of the roads. Question time, which of these bikes would be better suited for slow speed tractor mode in the nasty stuff. You know, when things need slow motion and some navigating. Don from Western Canada

US pricing seems odd. Here in Oz the 2020 Africa Twin is $22268 (AUD) ride away and the Adventure Sports version is $26106 (or $29206 with DCT and electronic suspension). Comparatively the V-Strom 1050XT is $20990 and the standard 1050 is $17990. Hello to the motorbike community. I have a question for anyone with the knowledge and experience. I am contemplating buying a brand new ADV this spring. I basically have it narrowed it down to 2 options. Option A) 2023 Honda Africa Twin Super Adventure Manual. Like the style and look, I am concerned about the continual maintenance on the chain. It is not uncommon for me to jump on my current bike and put ~500 km's on it in a day on the weekend (311 miles). I am also concerned about the comfort, both in the seat and wind protection. I read lots of information and people love them and of course people will gripe as well and for good reason, experience on the bike. Everyone is different. Is this bike going to be comfortable enough for a few very long days in the saddle from time to time? Although we all get off our bikes every 2-3 hours to fuel on a long trip, still good to have really good comfort when needed. Is this bike the one to have if a person gets an upholsterer to redo the seat to your butt contours? Will that make it an awesome long haul machine? Option B) 2023 Yamaha Super Tenene 1200. I understand this bike is boring (perhaps compared to some of the competition) but with that come great all day comfort in the saddle and super easy maintenance and reliability. Maybe not as much fun as some of the competition, but my current bike also has shaft drive and has had zero issues in 13 years of ownership. So maybe I don't want to give up reliability and low maintenance? Also, perhaps the Tenere is reaching it's last year of production, what happens if they do this year and I want to own the bike for 10+ years? This bike that I buy will be a long long time purchase and possibly my last bike (maybe not), but as we get older we look for more comfort. The riding I will do is 80-90% on the pavement and 10-20% gravel and fire roads. HOWEVER, I live an hour away from the mountains and perhaps with an ADV, that ratio will switch to less highway and more gravel/fire roads..........we'll see, the ADV could open a whole new chapter in my riding. The Honda would be a no brainer, but does the Yamaha do the same job with a little less fun factor? Would love feedback from all people that have/had either or both bikes and let me know based on your experience and knowledge. Thank you!

Actually ... this is not a matching comparison in anyways. I got to test ride both bikes and the only thing that stands out regarding the V-Strom is its Engine. The AT is in every regard the better package considering both price points. Sure ... the V-Strom is easier to access but all the electronics of the AT are not that complicated as I first thought. You are getting used to it pretty fast, especially due to its tochscreen. What interested me the most was the Suspension of the new AT and it did not disappoint. Also a huge plus for Honda. IMHO there is absolutely no reason to choose a V-Strom over the AT (except you are a fan of Suzuki and the V-Strom). Suzuki should have done more or lower the price significantly. It's sad that Suzuki wasn't able to improve the V-Strom more.
