As you said in your video buy an equivalent car to what your mates have, I have an idea for yous since you bought the cheapest example in the country, find a car you both like and one of you buy the cheapest example and the other buy the most expensive example in the country, see what it takes to get the cheapest one to the same level, see what's still wrong with the most expensive one and then modify them using genuine parts for the expensive one and knockoff parts for the cheap one.

That looked like such a good time! I used to own a 106 Rallye that was a right hoot to drive, and living in Europe meant parts availability was obviously better, and way cheaper. rev happy 1.6 liter, 103 horsepower, and only 860kg of car to lug around. It moved very well! We didn't get the 1.6 in the Swift here sadly, only the 1.3. The chassis is probably still solid, don't know how much else changes with the Sport version you've got there?

Always loved the 206, shame you didn't get the GTI 180. Sports variant vs sports variant. So far it's been a bit unfair on the old pug, was very surprised to see how well it did against the swift considering it's just the pov base spec commuter version. With nuggets like this, they are able to go harder and have more fun with less serious business because the cars capabilities are so much lower. Cars like that are excellent fun to drive hard because you aren’t going to be like mustang bro wrapped around a tree. With monster cars you have to be more serious and much more careful instead of just running them flat out.

The TU5JP4 is one of the better French 16-valve engines, on an armored cast iron block. Very amenable to modification. You can pull about ~150 horsepower out of it cheaply by changing the exhaust manifold, adding sharp camshafts with adjustable pulleys and an aluminum intake manifold from a Citroen C2 VTS, all topped off with tuning. Combined with the car's low weight, it makes for an incredibly fun driving experience :)

I've seen people running 206s with no oil or coolant. Let's be honest here, the 206 is a bulletproof car and cheap to run, the only issue would be finding parts in Australia where I'm guessing they aren't that common. In Euroland they're everywhere so you can just go to the scrap and find whatever body panel or part you seek for cheap. Also this is the internet, the Americans won't be voting on online polls for French cars, because even though they've never seen one IRL they believe they're terrible "because French lol".

Their Achilles heel (very appropriately) is the rear axle - the trailing arms pivot on needle bearings which rot away along with the stub that they mount on and the rear wheels develop a large amount of negative camber, sometimes so much that the tyres rub the inner arches! Entire rear axle replacement required every few years. There are entire companies that specialise in supply of refurbed axles. It's not a particularly expensive or difficult job to do the swap at least. Possibly in the Australian climate it's not so much of an issue.

The 206 is a reliable beast, seriously this mechanic's opinion is surprising. Here in France they are still driving EVERYWHERE. They are very solid. French cars are really poor reliability between 2004-2012 era. The 206 is solid. The 207 with the 1.6 however is a tick bomb

Lift off oversteer has nothing to do with having torsion bars vs coil springs. Both the Swift and the Pug have somewhat similar rear suspension designs (i.e. trailing arms) that provide zero camber control of the rear wheels which is why they are so eager to step out when you lift off.

It's easy to forget how much location plays in, as here in Norway it's kinda the opposite, the 206 is cheap and easy to find parts for, the Swift Sport isn't sold in Norway, as Suzuki Norway only sells AWD Suzukis, though some people did special order some, so there's like 6 Swift Sports in Norway in total, parts having to be special ordered in some cases, as they don't have FWD bits at the Suzuki dealerships. That said though, as a friend of mine used to work at a Suzuki dealership he owned one of the 6 Swift Sports in Norway, and test driving it both when stock, and when on coilovers and 18" OZ magnesium wheels, it is a car that is quite glued to the road, but their proportions feel strange, like the roof is super tall when stood next to one. Haven't driven a normal 206, but they were incredibly common on the road, to the point of there being 206 racing leagues. I did however get driving lessons in a 206CC as my grandmother used to have one, most I remember of that was how annoyed I got at not having low RPM torque, so exiting a roundabout in 2nd gear to go up a small hill, I ended up having to downshift into 1st, which I was not used to having to do at all.
@ferrumignis
@ferrumignis Жыл бұрын
Even though the Swift Sport was available in the UK, parts are still expensive and there is much less aftermarket support compared to European brands. That also affects insurance, my Swift Sport insurance was nearly 50% higher than a newer, more valuable and more powerful Golf GTi. The Swift is far more fun to drive though.

Can't wait to see what comes of this, both cars are great, and look like immense fun! BTW, the rear end coming out on hard corners is (or was) Peugeot/Citroën hot hatch tradition, the 205 ,106, AX and saxo were known for having quite loose rear ends that could get sketchy at higher speeds, especially in less capable hands (also, if there is ever to be a follow up to what is looking like an absolutely amazing series, you guys should try to go a size smaller! When you get down to those sub 800kg "as standard" euro nugs you find a whole new realm of madness)

Agreed - the gearbox on the 206 wouldn't last long with a turbo. It was designed to cope with small capacity NA SOHC engines - the torque of a turbo will snap it like it's a carrot! There is a factory gearbox upgrade available, but probably impossible to find in Australia (and needs some other expensive mods to make it work).

Correct BSI controls accessories, but also the gasoline pump, (which is what breaks down the most in the BSI, as it carries more tension). Here in the EU there is a lot of second-hand market, since it is not found new.

You all clearly don't know at all what you are talking about regarding 206s ^^ you say bs over bs, this is hearsay all at best lol. In this battle the swift is in good shape with the pro to be supposedly a "sport" version ? still a fatigued 206 with no tires keeps up ? 16 millions sold in france alone and millions of these are still around going strong since 2002 . Shit tonne of mods available, up to 200hp on the cheap on stock engine with a turbo. The TU block is more reliable you would ever need. These car are great despite being unfortunately to light on the rear axle. You bought a poorly maintain, loose-chassis one, on the other side of the planet... that does not mean much. It is definitely worth modding, have a look on what's available you'll be surprised
