My one issue with Suzume is that Suzume is I think 16-17 and Sota is at least in his mid-20s, which is a little bit of a yikes

Thankfully Souta never returns the feelings. It's clealry Suzume having a typical teen crush on an adult.

Yeah it's my problem with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as well with Lucy being 20+ and David being 17, I don't like that it keeps happening. I'm almost 17 and wouldn't like some 20+ year old taking a romantic interest in me. I was grossed by it when Souta mentioned he was in grad school, so his average age would be 20+. Also weird that the scene right before that had Suzeme sitting on him without his permission, and the morning after she kisses him without his consent. I don't think Souta even likes Suzeme romantically, they don't even kiss in the end (thank God she's still in highschool and I'd rather them be friends or a mentor, mentee thing). I also don't understand what the two see in each other. Why does Suzeme like about Souta to the point where'd she risk her life multiple times? But they should've been around the same age 16, 17 maybe. Why are some people allergic to having characters be legal when they date someone who's 20???

Yeah this was a heck of a movie. For me it was a fun ride through the beginning up until the big finale. Which wasn't less fun, but a whole bunch of ideas really just kind of piled on to the end what with the second magical cat and the worm dimension(????). And yeah, the romance aspect never really had a chance to grow to the point that I believed it was worth all of that danger. The reveal of the date of the earthquake was really effective to me though. Something about that bridging of fiction and reality always really gets me. But on a really unrelated note: I just finished the Netflix Avatar series (as well as a handful of videos of people talking about it) and I'm just thinking about how that show and this movie stand on opposite ends of the "Make Sure the Audience KNOWS what's going on" Spectrum. And while the disappointment of NAtLA is still very fresh with me, I think I do prefer a story that leans on the side of "I dunno, magic I guess?," rather than every dialogue scene being, "This is how this character feels about this event that happened and this is why they feel this way." Suzume might have left me confused and bewildered, but I guess at least my criticisms have questions attached to them rather than just blunt breakdowns about what didn't work?

About half way through, the only note I have is you seem to forget that when you see Suzumes room, there was just an earth quake, so I do think Suzume is somewhat messy the knocked over lamp might have just been because of the earth quake (the door event anyway)

Fun fact: I hate the separation in Your Name. I'm not a big fan of bittersweet endings or drama, but I do love Garden of Words. I just think the forced separation in Your Name, with Mitsuha writing "I love you" instead of her name is _so fucking stupid._ It's not like a tragedy where people make stupid mistakes that may make sense within context. No. She knows full well what will happen if she doesn't give SOME information about herself after all is said and done. I could never justify it emotionally or in character. It's 100% an artificial narrative decision that didn't sit well with me. I respect Makoto Shinkai a lot, but the sad truth to me is that I don't enjoy most of his work. Garden of Words is the only exception (to an insane degree actually, I genuinely love taking chocolate and beer nowadays thanks to it lmao).

Totally fair. Considering nearly all his movies share a lot of the same elements, if you don't jive with one of them, it makes sense that you wouldn't be a fan of his work overall. I agree with your criticisms about Your Name and that's one of the problems that got ironed out in WWY in my opinion. In Your Name a lot of the events of the film and especially, as you mentioned, the emotional climax are drivin largely by plot contrivance, which I don't think is the case in WWY. And for what it's worth, I also think I'd give a very slight edge to Garden of Words over Your Name, but Weathering With You is my favorite

I really love the movie and the fact that i see it with my girlfriend and get excited like 6 months before the release and that we literally didn't see any trailer we just think "Its a Makoto Shinkai movie and we love your name, that is enough" I probably didn't get most of the message but it was a really enjoyable movie

I though this movie was all over the place. Like, it is Okey, but a lot of elements don't close in a satisfying enough way. I think the chair specifically was pointless.

I hope more people know what this Anime Movie is. It's very unique and a True Original of Makoto Shinkai. Time will tell what else he'll create but to me Suzume stands out amongst the rest. Radwhips never disoppoints.

Yeah I'll definetly get around to it at some point. The idea I have in my head for that video is a bit larger scale than you'd think based on the premise and I havnt worked out exactly how I want to tackle it but I think it'll be one of my best videos when it does come out
