When I changed oil last time I started to fill up fresh oil with the drain plug removed constantly watching the level inspection window. 2L of nice smelling red oil was on the ground.

Anything on the magnetic drain plug? Leave the fairing off to clean it good, they look better without to me. Nice point about cooling off!

Using miller gloves for draining the oil, sacrilegious lol just doing my first oil change on my sv and the garage was properly ham fisted with oil filter, thought this can’t be right and yours just twisted off as I’d expect

Lol my GW250's crank cover feels like it's stripping too and it's basically a new bike, I've stripped the sump plug on my old hornet due to an ebay special torque wrench and had to take the sump off the fix, such a waste of time but I learned a lot I guess lool, I use a calibrated jug to refill after overfilling once/ being unsure if I'm holding the thing level

I didn't like how that oil ran out and the last remnants dripped into the oil puddle. Looks as thin as water, and smells of petrol? But then it was hot anyway.

I tighten a jubilee clip round the filter to stop it unscrewing, on an SRAD there's a handy sticky out bit to brace the screw against otherwise I'd lock wire it. Paranoia, it's a terrible thing.

If the "specimen cup" fluid reservoirs are in good shape, get or make covers. They don't do well with UV's.

Thanks for the video, it's really helpful! I have a couple of questions though: What if I don't have access to a torque wrench? My mechanic advised me to tighten the bolt by hand until I can and after that I should use a wrench and tighten it by one quarter of a turn. Is this good information? And the other thing is, can I use 10w50 oil? This is also what my mechanic advised saying it's gonna have a better resistance to heat. I listened to him so now I have 4 liters of Motul 7100 10w50. The manual says I can use 10w40 and 10w50 both in any temperature but it also recommends 10w40 so it stresses me out a a little bit.

Why won't you drain the oil cold and after a long period of time with the motorcycle parked (> 1 week)? It isn't a better way to extract the most of the oil inside the engine, gearbox? Thank you.

As the most of the oil will be in the oil sump and after thousands of km has some gasoline dilution and its consequent reduction of viscosity. I tried it several times on my DL650A and I extracted about 3 liters each time, including the oil within the filter (I did measure the weight of the used and bland new filter to get the oil mass in it). I've sent some oil samples to the Blackstone and Polaris labs and the results seems OK, including particles counting. I can share with you the results, if you're interested.

would you not precharge the new filter with oil before fitting it? otherwise the engine will start and run without oil for a few seconds?
@thedirtyworkshop

There's already oil in the system, you'll never get it all out. This is a different story when starting an engine dry and I'll cover that during the rebuild - after the teardown

Hi matt.. many questions.. Any particular reason you use castrol? Have you tried motul 7100 or 300v? Why dont you use motul? What do you check in an engine oil and decide which oil to use considering price also.. Whats your advice on which engine oil would you recommend to me? Thx in advance

Hi matt!! Do you check ur oil level when the engine is cold or hot? My motorcycle manual tells me to check it first thing in the morning (hinting cold) but my friend has a similar bike as mine and he had filled his oil when it was cold and ended up overfilling it. I had an oil test done on my brand new R3 I had a fair bit of fuel in it. turns out that my bike isnt tuned for 98RON fuel. I was getting bore wash. Id notice the oil get fucking thin just by looking at it every 1,000km. so I rang my oil company they bent over backwards to help me. in the end had 6% fuel concentration no wear metals or anything so I was catching it early. I dropped back to 95 RON fuel and I have 2% fuel after 5,000 km now which is a very acceptable number. Moral unless its a brand new bike that says premium 98 only DON NOT RUN IT

AAAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA almost choked on my chips My best, I opened a 5qt bottle of oil, meticulously pulled the foil seal off then set it down to clean my funnel and when I came back to put the funnel in the fill port, I kicked the bottle and about 4qts of brand new oil went to lubricating my garage floor.
