I mean yeah v-twin torque is nice but any 1000cc inline 4 will cream all over a SV1000. The SV has less torque than 1000 CC inline 4’s. It’s just that it makes it all at the bottom end. If you had the same rider on a SV and any 1000cc sportbike at the drag strip the SV would lose every time

Great review, however I strongly disagree with a statement that this is an intermediate bike. Maybe it has only ~120hp, but it requires much more skilled rider when compared to more powerful inline or V 4s. It pulls really hard at low RPMs, plus very strong engine breaking can block the rear wheel during agressive downshifts or even if you close the throttle too fast on a wet road. My friend has the VFR1200 and even though it has 50 hp more, I would say it is much more forgiving bike than the old SV. We have to keep in mind that it originates from the famous widow maker, the TL1000 S and R.

Great bikes. Loads of torque. Heavy on fuel in slow moving traffic (mid 30's), but good on a run (mid fifties). I often found myself going faster than I should! They have a few inherent problems which need fixing, such as the magnets detaching themselves from the rotor, wiring connectors which corrode and burn out, and clutches which rattle and knock alarmingly, but all fixable! Mine had superbike bar conversion (S model) and was comfy enough for a long run. They sound beautiful as they go past you, but you can't hear that lovey sound from the saddle unfortunately!

The engine and chassis is brilliant but brakes and suspension are crap. Buy the adaptor brackets to put the CBR900 nissin calipers on the front with sintered pads. Swap the fork internals for stiffer springs. A GSXR 600 rear shock drops straight in. Drop one tooth on the front sproket (or +3 on the back) if you have the S version. and replace the throttle tube with a 1/5 turn from a GSXR 600 as opposed to the 1/6 turn which comes as standard. There is also a bracket for a gsxr steering damper. Go to Traxxion Dynamics for parts For the 2003 version only there is an easy fix for the issue of slipping into neutral when going from 1st to 2nd gear. There is tiny part for this to be replaced in the clutch housing. All these mods are very cheap and they will totally transform the riding experience of this bike. Have had this bike for 14 years and will never let it go.
@TescoRoadman2 жыл бұрын
They’re not underrated, they’re just good beginner motorcycles. And that’s where the positives end The minute you start developing your cornering techniques and you become more confident as a rider and you push the bike more, the budget aspect of these bikes become clear. The brakes and suspension are crap. It’s scary how bad the brakes are on my SV650’s, and I had them refreshed about a year and a half ago. It’s a good thing v-twins have a hell of a lot of engine braking to assist you in slowing down I’ve also ridden an SV1000 as well and while the suspension is better than the 650s, it’s still budget, and won’t compete with anything in the 1000cc sportbike range from other manufacturers

Wow what's the odd of you test riding my next bike. My CBR was stolen 2 weeks back and my neighbor across the street offered me his 2004 sv1000s for a sweet deal, of course I jumped at it. He's now onto a 2007 Yamaha R1. Thanks Sean good stuff 👍

Hey man! Congrats on acquiring your SV1000!!! I'm not sure if you're interested in fitting any performance modifications or not but I can definitely lend my knowledge/opinions on what to do/not to do. Oh and dont buy a power commander for your SV1000. I can tell you how to achieve the same results for under 5 dollars and only 30 minutes labor! Lmk buddy, and if you're not interested, that's cool too man!!! Happy Riding man!!!

chris oconnor this is a v-twin, the Fz1 is an in-line 4. both are naked bikes, both have half fairings

I like this one but want the fz1 more.. because yamaha
@davidstancu29635 жыл бұрын
This has more bottom end torque because it's a vtwin, and the fz1 has a nasty top end, seriously fast. Fz1 weighs 500lbs sv1000 weighs 420. Fz1 is more comfortable and faster but the sv1000 handles better and is fuel injected w more usable power. Its hard to pick which is better because they're both great in their own ways for real street riding, fz1 comfier, sv1000 more manageable. I have an 04 fz1 and am looking for a sv1000 for that bottom end power, fz is anemic below 5k.

Owned one for 3 years. Last bike I rode before hanging it up and having kids... swap forks with inverted GSXR 750s, GSXR 1000 rear shock, -1/+2 sprockets, ss lines, power commander, and some decent rubber. I miss it every day.

I bought one of those new in '03. I ride it daily still. Great for long rides. Your zero to 60 was awful. With good pipes it sounds like thunder!

I miss my 97 tl1000s. These bikes a wheelie kings. The biggest improvement on the better fuel injection system on the SV. Atleast the my TLS was good for 170. Intake pipes and power commander. With partial airbox mod.

My race club has 5 or 6 fellows that run SV1000s, sport class lap times are 1.14. To 1.12 times, the open class run I the 10s. So this bike is fast no matter what street riders say. Cheers

Tangtong Gyalpo said the same thing: If you are not on the truth path, you are on a road leading to bondage. I like my 2000 SV 650, paid $1200 for it. Carbureted, sitting with me here by the woodstove, waiting for a fuel system rebuild. even though it ain't in tune yet, it's put many a smile on my old face. I liked my old Norton's 4 speed box better, but they cost like, 10 times more. So I just start in 2nd and skip 4th.

I used to own a ‘99 SV650. Loved it. Great street bike. Very comfortable. Not a great highway bike, but not bad. I’d love to grab one of these SV1000s. The added weight would be beneficial.

That would have been a great bike, it was supposed to be a replacement for the TL1000 but Suzuki de-tuned the motor. But thats was when the inline 4 liter bikes were hitting the showroom floors and that what most people were buying which killed the vtwin superbikes class. Which in WSB racing the vtwin era of the late 90s was the best racing ever to watch

my 2006 SV1000S had the same peak hp as my 1997 TL1000S but more grunt down low. The chassis felt so different though, the TL was just nutty (but fun), but the SV felt like it was on rails. Loved both bikes.

Funny you mentioned both my first bikes, i had bandit 1200 as first bike and learner bike, then switched to my current sv 1000s. I wanted that Great sound and wanted to feel how it was to ride fuelinjected both are fun and quite different from each other, first thing i did with then though was a small gearing change. The bandit was a beast real wheelie machine if you wanted it to be but still gentle, sv 1000 a little twitchier due to the injection i guess faster to steer and lackning just that little in The absolute lowest revs, wich gearing solved. OH man i could go on and on, they are fun bikes.

@terohyvarinen43584 жыл бұрын
I had one. Quite soon after purchasing it the lower bearing of either connection rod gave up. The bike stood on a workshop for three months! I had red that the motor is reliable, but in this time it was not. Later I red more and by an accident find a claim that the motor cannot stand wheelies. Well, my bike had dents on the both sides of the tanks, so it had experienced a hard tankslapper or something like that.That does not necessarily implicate wheeling, but anyway, some kind of aggressive driving. Otherwise the bike was light and relative comfortable for a sporty vehicle. However, it is not an armchair on two wheels and riding according to the low Finnish speed limits made my wrists sore. However, I loved the bike, the copper paint, the aggressive composition of engine and fairings and, of course, the sound! I would like to have another one. I think it would be funnier and more interesting than my heavy CBR1100XX.

I'm gonna have to stay away from you man cuz anybody talking damping who says dampening will at some point comment and or work on suspension and adjust the "dampening " instead of adjusting the damping and get someone KILLED. Please get your terminology right and speak properly in regards to bike terminology. I.E. FORK DAMPING .SHOCK DAMPING..STEERING DAMPING .....DAMPENING IS TO GET OR FIND SOMETHING THAT IS WET PLEASE LOOK THE TWO WORDS UP! I miss my 2004 SV1000S, but Taiwan regulation requires bikes over 10 years old to be checked out of emmsion and muffler shields every 6 months, I found myself too busy to ride it, so when a college boy came with the cash, he rode it home that afternoon.
