SV650 Clutch Cable replacement using the old cable to guide through the new cable. A simple job which should make changing gears feel much smoother now.

The technique of taping the old and new cables together and pulling them through saved me so much effort! Thank you!

If you disconnect the clutch cable at the lever first then you don't need to remove the clutch linkage eliminating the need to set the angle. This makes it all go much quicker and easier. 😉

Great Video! My clutch cable broke yesterday on my '03 SV650S and I have to do this to it. The attachment mechanisms seem to be the same so this video has given me a great deal of foresight. Thank you so much for providing this content in high quality resolution and easy to follow instruction!

i do a lot of work on my bike and normally just drive it through the shop for a cable that i know will be a pain, just because i don't want to deal with it myself. this trick just saved me so much time and trouble due to a snapped cable. thanks!

Just wanted to say, very useful videos. Have been riding 50 + years, have ridden SV since 2002. Done 131K on it, but done very little maintenance. Basically replaced wearing parts. Just having a problem now with non starter, maybe clutch switch. Anyway, thanks for all your insights. Mine has an Arrow titanium exhaust, big bore high level, what a sound! Just like a Ducati . Take care, Dave.

JUST A QUICK UPDATE FOR YOU TAMSEN. You're one of the best on the internet as a GO TO source for sv650s. I have a second gen 2004 s which I'm converting to a more upright position. I was running the clutch cable from the naked 650 as it's 4.13" longer and the 90 degree bend hung up in my frame before the speed adjuster screw. I put the tank upright and moved the airbox up on the left side a couple inches and saw the problem. I was able to correct by cutting the 90 degree metal tube off and was able to finish the job satisfactorily. I used duct tape initially and this probably allowed me to pull cable to cable.I hope this helps others.

Nice video! Straight forward job, though it's nice to actually see it before doing it myself. My 2005 SV650n clutch cable just snapped at an intersection and I was left to walk it down the sidewalk about two miles back home. Only 10k on the original cable, too. Tip to people, it's an easy job and a cheap part, carry an extra cable with you on longer trips!

Anyone know what type of grease should go inside the clutch linkage cylinder? (The rotating part) I just took it apart and soaked it in vinegar to remove the rust. I'm new to mechanical work so I'm not sure what grease to use for what.

If you follow this method you may start to hear a sucking noise off in the distance when you remove the clutch push rod assembly. That sucking noise is going to be your life once you realize all of the tiny ball bearings have fallen out. Ask me how I know. Just download the shop manual and follow that.
@TamsenCooper
@TamsenCooper 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Daniel, thanks for taking the time to comment, I am not sure about why all the bearing would fall out, as the clutch push rod was not removed, it was only the cable that was adjusted- although having taken one apart in the past I can relate to the tiny bearing inside them, if you get the time, can you let me know how this went wrong for you and maybe I can include it in a future video?

so when you pull on the lever, and you follow the cable down to the bottom of the engine, is it fully engaging and disengaging the clutch? you should be able to pull the lever and see it move (with the engine off and the bike on its side stand is fine)

That cable looks good enough to serve more. What are the signs of a bad cable?
@TamsenCooper
@TamsenCooper 8 жыл бұрын
It probably could have done a few more miles, however, a new cable is about £10 so not serious money, it stretches over time so when it gets close to the maximum adjustment (which mine was) it was precautionary to replace it before it was at risk of snapping.
@Sashalexandros

Tamsen Cooper Is a moto cable under so much stress that it can snap?
@TamsenCooper

It would be a rare event but the theory is it could happen. Maintenance is about that though, precautionary rather than repair, which usually causes damage and therefore can end up being more expensive.

Great video unfortunately my clutch linkage came apart so I had the joys of seeing ball bearings . I'm sure I put it was all back into place 're greased e t c , I can Change gear but the clutch is not disconnecting as when in first gear, then pull clutch lever in she is still pulling, I'm tried the clutch mantra method adjusting the linkage , getting nowhere just getting irritated , removing the clutch linkage and it coming apart means Everything is changed. It's going back into the garage now wished I had not touched it :-(

Oh I know how that feels when what should be a straightforward job turns into something much more than that! I have now stopped using the phrase 'quick job' as that seems to put a curse on the time it will actually take! Have you got it sorted now?

no sadly sadly i fitted the new cable i had a bar change to higher not a race bunny and it all fits well, it changes gear etc.. but i seem to have an excessive drag, i thought if you pulled it in the clutch was not connected.. checked in on my other bikes and yep even they if lever pull in and into gear they seem to have resistance.. really confused now as when i pull lever in from first gear, it is trying to move forward.. confused isnot the word , sounds to me like garage time i really tried to make sure the actuator is all ok using the clutch guru

I tried to do this with and OEM clutch cable and my clutch simply doesnt function right. I have the least possible slack at the top end to the point where it sometimes falls out of place, and i have adjust the lock nuts to the highest point down at the engine side. I think the cable is too long? Also at 5:12 when you talk about the clutch adjustment plate angle, i cant adjust it as one side of the bolt snapped off!! Having a nightmare

+TakyX hey, it is a bit rough round the edges but I did a quick video on taking the fairing off. If you are replacing the clutch cable, you may not need to remove the fairing at all, just tape one end of the new clutch cable to the end of the old one and you can just pull it through. If the video doesn't cover what you need then let me know, I hope it helps. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5m0kpyjYsmihLs
