Quick and Dirty swap of GSXR forks onto my 1st generation '01 SV650.
This SV650 is a first generation model, and that is important to know because I needed a '96-99 GSXR750 SRAD triples for this project. They are nearly a direct bolt-on to the SV frame head, the ignition switch will bolt in, the steering lock and steering stops will also work. However, you will need a custom top bearing from TWFracing.com becasue the steering stem on the '96-99 GSXR750 triples is bigger at the top than the original .99-'02 SV650 steering stem. Don't bother looking for that bearing elsewhere, its a custom 47x30x15mm bearing that is custom manufactured by them especially for this application.
The forks are from a '03 GSXR1000, but any fork legs with a 50mm top and 54mm bottom will bolt directly into the the '96-99 GSXR750 triples. When using these '96-99 GSXR750 triples, you will also need the matching axle and wheel as the width of these triples is a little wider than the norm. A TL1000S or TL100R or Hayabusa wheel will also fit.
The new 96-99 GSXR750 axle is bigger than the SV650 part, so the speedometer drive won't fit unless you either mount it on the rear axle (to be covered in a future video) or if you install a hall-effects sensor with magnets on the front wheel.
if you've done this work call me you'll know that the speedometer Drive won't fit, so I did a video for that as well here... SV650 Speedoemter Drive Video:

Do not attempt to duplicate anything you see in this video, you assume full-responsibility for your money, property and body by watching and using any techniques you see within this video. This also includes any after effects after the fact such as when your bike crashes and burns because you didn't tighten your steering head bearings properly. When you die we will all laugh at you. If you have nay questions or any doubts in this type of work, or if you're lacking the proper tools, then you should have all work performed on your motor vehicles by a professional mechanic. I checked out the stock triple today. It was cast with big reinforcements to accept the risers. I think I'll need to weld in some material and drill through the whole mess. Also realized I have a brake issue. My bike is a naked and the brake line "splitter" mounts to the bottom triple. I guess I need an entire front brake setup including the master? And a longer brake line to reach the MX bars....The parts list keeps growing!

@allmiller4u You could do it that way, but I recommend that you change the oil in them to somewhere between 20W and 30W, and that will require the fork legs to come off and be inverted to drain.

I only buy stuff when I get a killer deal! Forks and clipons were free because I was owed a favor, and the complete brakes were a bonus from another complete front end that I bought for another project ($299) that didn't need the brakes! I found the triples axle and fender and front wheel with tire with shipping for $9 $7 $12 and $30 respectively on ebay. I got the discs locally, for $50. The only part that I paid full retail for was the special top bearing, $45

@darthclone7 Its actually easy, and there are a couple different ways to do it. The way I'd do it is to remove the top tree, flip it over and remove the ignition directly. But if you don't have the right tool to tighten down the steering nuts, this may not be the best solution for you. The other way is to try and reach UNDER the bike up to underside of the the top triple and remove the bolts with some socket extensions, or if that fails remove the front fairing and attack it directly.

I am roughly your size, at 6'3" and 250lbs or so, so yes I found it too soft to keep as/is. Plus mine was worn out, and in my case I found some cheap GSXR parts far less cost than replacing/repairing the stock SV stuff.

@Cobryn205bws If you change the trees, either get new bearings or use the same bearings in their entirety, that includes matching the same inners and outers. You can also change the forks and leave the trees alone if the fork legs fit in your trees. I would have done that in this case, but the GSXR1000 forks won't fit in the SV650 trees at all.

Yes, the entire SRAD front end will work! However, some of the components are a little more dated, for example, no radial brakes. And yes, I have experience with a first gen SV650S.... thats exactly what this bike is! :) The fairings and stuff were never put back on when I rescued this machine from a trailer park and restored it.

@Cobryn205bws It rides awesome! The old "boingers" were just that, BOING BOING BOING! Terrible front end on that SV650. I'm sure it was worn out or abused, but still, it was worse than the front end on my Puch moped. I'm happy with it, and I haven't even tuned it yet, it was just such an improvement as/is that I was happy.

@112mikee112 The SV forks sucked, and always did, even with oil in them. I hate those things. It handles great, I'll have a followup video on that shortly. I left the oil and springs alone.... the SV might be a little lighter, but the GSXR1000 (and the SV) are configured for lightweight rider... I nearly double the weight of what Suzuki considers the average. I haven't dialed them in yet, I just checked that both fork legs had the same adjustment for consistency... and they did! :)
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles 12 жыл бұрын
I replaced the entire front clip, there is no SV parts on there at all, and that includes all brake parts: calipers, brake lines, and master cylinder. You might be able to recycle the upper line that goes to the splitter, as with regular handlebars you'll need that length, but the rest needs replacement. A complete frontend should be available on ebay relatively cheap, unless you want some special config. In my case I wanted the GSXR1000 forks for stiffer springs, and radial front brakes.
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles 11 жыл бұрын
I don't know if the TL axle will fit, but to keep the answer short, the best axle to use is the one that matches your triples. I had a GSXR axle, and it fit in the forks but wasn't long enough to reach between them both. SRAD triples have a wider spacing, so its best to use an SRAD 750 axle! :)
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles 11 жыл бұрын
The gauges did not fit directly on, rather I made a couple small brackets that attached to the clipon handlebars' pinch bolts. I think you should be able to do the same with the front end you have. I guess I don't have any close-ups of it in this video... oops! I guess I need to cover that in another video.

The only big difference is the body style and that the 2nd generation is fuel injected. The 2nd gen was also produced for much longer so parts are easier to get on ebay. Mine is obviously a 1st gen, but I love it!

Any year First Generation Hayabusa rim should work. It may need spacers on the sides, you'll know when you fit it together. The SRAD front wheel is a direct drop-in, also you'll need an SRAD axle, its wider, other axles won't fit.

Like most of these swaps, he fails to address the speedometer drive issue. SV650's speedometer drive is on the left side of the front forks, so unless you use a GSXR front end off '95 and earlier, the later front ends are off bikes where the speedometer is driven of the counter-shaft sprocket, which the SV650 has no provision for. Always be aware of front ends bought off ebay. Either they're stolen or off crashed motorcycles, which means the chances of all parts being straight are slim to none. Especially never use the old steering head bearings. All Balls racing can get you proper new tapered roller bearings.

What the hell are you talking about? LoL! Like most of these comments that people leave without doing their own due diligence they make a comment and make themselves look bad without reading the video description or following any of the links... I devoted an entire video to the subject of speedometer drive, and no I didnt need a 95 or earlier front end. While the video was shot a long time ago by me with some lousy video equipment which is the best I could afford at the time the fact is, I never failed anything, 12 years later the bike is still running and driving just like then, everything still works. Here's the video link you missed in this videos description: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3Sqf5t9oNaAY6c

couldn't you fit a gsxr srad 750 front axle speedo drive instead of the ingenious rear axle sv650 drive you have done? maybe somehow get some srad clocks mounted to the srad triple tree/top yoke? i was looking at the connector of sv650 clocks and gsxr clocks and theres a good chance they are the same. i havent tested that yet obviously.

Nice. yea my "killer deal" was 450 for an 08 front end (minus clip-ons/top triple/and fender), plus a front wheel and rear whee from a 2007. I got an 05 upper triple to keep the stock ignition location so i can retain the steering lock, but it was required to be machined 3mm for the steering stem. all i need is clip-ons and tire. thinking of temporarily using the 120/60/17 tire for now. rear will wait as i need the caliper adapter (also by Zoran).

Glad I could help! Thanks for the comment! I painted this bike last year, its VW Bus Sage Green now! Odd color for a bike, so it gets lots of compliments! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnOvipujdqmUoNE The front end height I believe fell about 1/2 inch shorter than stock SV forks... but that was inadvertently resolved by installing a slightly taller tire some time ago by accident. I ordered the wrong size (120/70/17) and that raised the front end, bonus! LoL! I don't remember how I set up the rear shock, there was a lot of trial and error there. I mounted it then put adjusters links on there to get the height correct. After that I adjusted the shock to my taste and body weight but didn't record the settings. I rode the Dragon last summer during the eclipse.... this thing got a lot of attention and rode like a dream! I probably need to stiffen it up a little more since then.... I got fat this year.Thanks so much for the questions, I hope I helped you!

The GSXR top is very easy to drill, but its not particularly strong for this purpose because it wasn't intended for it. I've never seen anyone drill them and have them break, however. I would say that it might be a good idea to reinforce and fill the underside with some more material. A proper welding engineer would be able to give you a better suggestion. Hope that helps!

I do believe an SRAD600 complete front end will work on a 1st gen SV650. If you try to use more modern forks in the SRAD600 tree, however, they won't fit! :)
@DuckmanCycles

Hi. I think any 2003+ GSXR 600/750/1000 front end should pretty much fit a 2nd generation SV650. I haven't done one myself, but I have read about them before. Depending on your weight, you would generally choose the respective GSXR front end. For example, I'm somewhat heavy and of larger stature, so I used GSXR1000 forks. My little girlfriend would be plenty happy with a front end from a 600.
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles 12 жыл бұрын
Not sure, think it would be better to weld something in there solid. The bottom of the top tree is scooped out, you could maybe cut a piece of 1/8" steel and fill that space then drill the holes through both and sandwich it all together with bolts. At least if the top tree cracks, then I think it should hold it all together.
@Munky332

GSXR 600/750 forks are typically the same. that being said the 08's come with a .9 spring rate. Don't know how much you weigh, but the spring of .9 is a fine upgrade up to about 190 lbs. (check racetech for recommend spring rate). i'm doing 08 600 forks on my 2005. the problem is you need an upper tripple from a 2005 to retain the stock steering locks, and the steering stem needs to be bored out to 28mm (from 25mm)... i'll probably be doing a video on it.

springs are easy. thats probably the biggest factor (the reason the front end is so bouncy) the only advantage that the GSXR front end has over an emulated front end is the compression/rebound damping adjustment, and the bling factor of up-side down forks. emuls + springs + fork oil can be done cheaper than a GSXR swap unless you find a sweet deal, which is not likely to happen. i managed to cobble mine together for about 450$ which is about as sweet as it gets. "typically" its 600+.

there are tons of options for the 2nd gen, and other than the GSXR parts, you dont need any bushings or spacers. if your planning on running it naked though, try and get a 06? (i think) upper triple, its got the location for the ignition and it will retain the lockout. i have a complete 08 waiting to go on, i had to have the 06 tripple milled out like 2mm on the inside for it to fit the 08 lower. im keeping the stock brake pump for now, but with radial brakes.

The light is an cheap ebay knockoff as you say. There truly is no highbeam at all, but you can wire it any way you want. I made 2 small lights come on for low beam, and those plus two higher wattage bulbs come up for high beam. The gauges are mounted pretty simple with some metal strapping to the clip on bolts, you can see how it works in this video.

Great Video. Im considering doing this exact mod to my '02 SV650. BUT, I'm looking to run handlebar risers with fat bars. Happen to know of a top triple that will accept this? I've read that the GSXR top triple is to delicate to drill although it looks similar to the stock SV650 triple that has risers. Just wondering if you had any input. Thanks for posting these vids, and keep up the good work!

i never really felt the brakes up front were that bad with upgraded pads (talkign stock SV) if your looking for a cheaper alternative for a non-race bike, i'd also suggest 15w or 20w fork oil, emulators, and springs for the stock forks. i'm thinking about making a back-up set of stock forks to keep on hand for myself incase i decide to do some sort of racing that requires "stock" forks.

I think the same set up should work for you, but you'll need some different bearings in the headstock on the frame

Im putting gsxr 750 07' front end on my 1st gen sv 650 and theres no mounts for my 1st gen gauges because the gsxr has a full fairing and a frame brace. any suggestions on mounting the 1st gen clocks on a gsxr tripple tree? it looks like it worked fine with the srad, did it mount directly on?

Did not mount on directly, had to make some brackets. Simple enough. 😁👍🏻

btw, this would be my first bike. ive heard they are good first bikes because they aren;t crazy fast like a supersport, but they give you some room to grow unlike a 250. thoughts?

Yes. But what it takes to make it fit I don't know. If you've got the parts already, try and test fit and you should know what you need to do. Thanks for the question.

Is that a stock GSXR upper triple tree? I am looking to replace one on a CX500 fork swap.

Yep! Stock SRAD triples on here! Its been good for the last 9 years on this early model SV650! Not sure if the bearings nor steering stem is the right size for a CX500, however. Recommended upgrade in my case! Would like to see your build! Got any videos?

not sure if i wanna sell the stock front end to make back some of the money, or throw some cash for some emuls, 15w oil, and springs in it for a backup just in case i want to race somewhere that requires "stock" forks.

yea I've been seeing a lot of srad forks going for around 225 bucks on ebay, I'm guessing the 2000-03 gixxer 750 forks are pretty much the sames ones that came on the srad with floating brakes

@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles 5 жыл бұрын
Thats a good question! I began collecting parts to do the swap on my SV650 almost 10 years ago! Black then I think the Gladius only just hit the market, and a new bike was a little too rich for my blood... lol! But I'd say its possible, but I think you'd use a different set of triple trees, and a different front axle and wheel, I've been told a 2011 GSXR1000 front end will fit ya. Please do your research first before committing to parts! I still have this SV650 to this day, its been repainted and I still ride it! It was pretty awesome when I got it on the Tail of the Dragon!
