Quick and Dirty swap of a GSXR1000 rear shock onto my 1st generation '01 SV650.
This SV650 is a first generation model, and that is important to know because I needed a shock with a 45º reservoir to clear the battery box that will also need to be lowered slightly. A Kawasaki ZX6 / 636 shock is popular for this swap, but I had a GSXR1000 shock available at no cost so I elected to install that instead.

If you noticed in the video, I have GSXR forks on this bike. Since GSXR forks are shorter than SV650 forks yes the front end was lowered, but not deliberately. The GSXR1000 shock length was slightly shorter, but I cannot tell you what year it came from because I found it in a bin full of miscellaneous salvaged parts from wrecked bikes.

@nitrosport5 LoL! Of course you know I'm kidding. If you loosen the preload adjuster at the top the sprng comes loose, then remove the circlip from the bottom. Its almost effortless.

@CZroe The magic trick was filmed in two parts, about 2 weeks apart, then edited together.... :-P Most paint has some degree of flex in it, and in the case of the shock spring it doesn't flex enough to stress the paint.
@DuckmanCycles

I believe that is the preferred shock for this modification.

your right the gen 1 would look odd. I have an 05 and now that I know that the shock mount will work it might just work but it take some work and makeing the side plastic ok take care if you ever get the two side by side take a look ok take care

@CZroe I cut a ball point pen, lol. :) I do plan to use something more attractive, but that was good enough for then.

Don't be coy! I want to know both how you changed the spring color AND how you did the video transition trick. ;) Wouldn't paint flake when flexed?

O5 SV650, I am 5'2. I am told spring is tightened all the way. My bike bottoms out. Will this new spring raise the bike? If so, I wont be able to touch enough to move the bike around and back up myself?
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles 3 жыл бұрын
If your bike is raised yet still saggy, this shock will most certainly raise your bike. I had to put some link adjusters on there to dial it in. Its been good since!

@CZroe Any paint should do the trick if you properly prep the surface correctly. I like duplicolor, though. For rattlecan paint its a little pricey but it looks nice.

What did you use to make the spacers? I need something similar to get my rear slider spools mounted with my Sportisis swingarm cover/hugger on the 250. It leaves enough room for the 10mm mounting bolts so I bought longer bolts to thread through the spools. Because I can't make anything much wider than the bolt, I need a 11/12mm diameter spacer to keep the spools away. The Home Depot didn't have anything in their hardware, plumbing, or conduit aisles and they didn't know where else to send me.

Hi man is the front suspension a direct fit? If not what mods have to be done?
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles 5 жыл бұрын
Nearly a direct fit, the only thing that was necessary was getting a special bearing for the top of the triple tree. I think I might have covered that in the video even. 😁👍😁👍😁

Yeah the stock suspension was pretty bad, but I'm still riding this bike to this day since the upgrades but now I think it's too stiff LOL... but I had but I had a lot of fun on it on the Tail of the Dragon during the eclipse last August. :)

I have a 2001 sv650 and I am having a problem with my shock choice. The one I have the reservoir is down and sticks out a little further than yours. What year gsxr did you get that shock out of? And was the shock length the same or did you end up lowering the front to make up for the drop in suspension on the rear?
@shirra86
@shirra86 6 жыл бұрын
will the zx6 shock be more easier to fit( no modding reqiured?)

You'd have to get a shock and compare, there are lots of different zx6 shocks through the years.

do you know anything about swapping the shock on a SV650S K3? I'd like a shock for which I don't have to cut the battery box. I already know a ZX10R 07/08 shock would fit but that's waaay to stiff for my weight: i'm only 70kgs / 155 lbs..

@@DuckmanCycles I mean, What color did you go with? Did you go with a base metallic color and a clear, or was it all one spray? What did you do to remove the old color?
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles 5 жыл бұрын
I see. Just regular paint stripper will do the job like this: amzn.to/2Ekzf5m then afterwards I sprayed a base coat of this stuff: amzn.to/2UBrv4q then sprayed the gold (they call it yellow) over that. amzn.to/2PCvhGX I hope that helps!
