Quick and Dirty video of how I relocated my speedometer sensor to the rear wheel on my 1st generation '01 SV650.
This SV650 is a first generation model, that is important because the second generation uses a different speedometer sender unit.
Breif summary: The SV650 speedometer drives doesn't fit onto the GSXR front end swap that I performed in an earlier video because the GSXR axle is too big for it, additionally there is no space to mount it. There are other options available such as mounting magnets and a hall-effect sensor on the GSXR front end, but I wanted to take a different approach and use the parts I already had rather than building something new. The rear axle on the SV650 is the same size as the former front axle so moving the speedometer drive to the rear was relatively easy. The speedo drive replaces the right side wheel spacer, but because the speedo drive is larger the brake caliper had to be machined down about 5mm to compensate. Also the speedo drive rotor has no way of being driven by the rear wheel, there is no provisions for it. Using some cheap JB Weld or some eposxy you can fabricate an appropriate drive unit using the rotor itself as a mold/template.

Been riding this 2.5 years now. The speedo drive has a solid core, its a glorified spacer by any other name. No worries!

How did you eliminate the fact the speedo gives an incorrect reading?. I did exactly what you have done and had the bracket machined down. When i went out today for a test ride, i was in 3rd doing about 60mph. (Following traffic) Apparantly i was going 140mph. I speed up to over take and it went off fhe clocks before i even got out of 3rd gear top speed. If yours isnt doing that then maybe it have a faulty sensor but i bought it brand new.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have fitted a GSXR 750 k3 front end to my SV gen1. So i'll have to do the rear wheel speedo conversion. Your video is very helpfull and easy to follow. Many thanks.

Thanks for watching and thanks for the compliment! I can't tell you the exact accuracy, but it seems about right to me now. Like you, my SV650 (or all my OEM bike speedos for that matter) seem to read roughly 5mph above actual speed. A taller tire in front will correct some, but the differences would require a calculator to get the exacts. Changing the front tire is the easiest option, though. And if you have a GSXR front end conversion you'll want the taller tire in the front anyways. :)

Far out! Thanks for the comments as always, be sure to post up some videos of that! Love to see it!

@CZroe The rear tire is bigger, meaning the speedo reads lower than it used to. But before you jump to conclusions, the speedo always showed 5mph higher than actual. So now its more accurate than before! :)

@CZroe Yep! Most motorcycles are that way.

No problems to speak of. The rear wheel is slightly larger diameter, so it spins slower forcing a lower reading on the speedo, HOWEVER, the speedo always incorrectly displayed a speed too high anyways, so now its actually more accurate than before.

@tolaros2 Good write-up! As far as the nuts are concerned, they were on the bike when I bought it, so if they didn't come with them originally then I guess I got lucky, LOL! Thanks for the comment! :)

I have to say... this is a really cool idea for a couple factors... 1.- We all know that the speedometer on SV650 is aproximatelly 8% fast... The Standard 120/60R17 front tire is 22.67" diameter The Standard 160/60R17 rear tire is 24.56" diameter. The diference it's 1.89" or 8.3% larger. This would make the speedometer much more accurate than stock because a larger tire will turn slower per revolution. If this can be made to work on a GSXR rear conversion kit, with a 180/55R17 rear tire is 24.80" diameter and a 2.13" difference or 9.4% larger This would make your speedometer read 1.5% slower than actual speed... only issue is that there is only 19 mm of spacer so to go to 31 mm, we would need to shave a whopping 12 mm of the caliper bracket... Excellent work!!

@hannas1234 Its not useless, it has purpose.The last 33% of the video is calculated that way deliberately so that the 3rd thumbnail is exactly what I want without fussing with youtube thumbnail calculators that aren't consistent and don't work. Makes sense, right?

Nice mod. But did you put something in to replicate the 'anti-spin' tab like on the left fork to keep the sensor from spinning on its own?

I think I'll start from beginning i've got all my dashboard light every other lights eg indicators head lights etc. it shows me how much it RPM but doesn't calculate how many miles I've TRAVELED and mph CURRENTLY driving that's the only thing that stopped working so I've checked the sensor cable and and its connected okay and now I've checked speedometer itself and that also have a good connection any think else can I do? even if speedometer cable with the sensor looks good can it still be faulty? If so how can I check that?
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles 9 жыл бұрын
Disconnect the sensor wire and raise the front wheel. Check for continuity across the two wires in the sensor wire plug, then spin the front wheel. The continuity should go from "open" to "shorted" repeatedly. If it does not, bad sensor or a knick or break the wire somewhere.

Is your sensor 4 or 8 magnets inside? I'm in need of a 4 magnet sensor for a supermoto project I have in the works, so if yours is 4 magnet and have the part number on hand, I would appreciate the info as much as your conversion video.
@DuckmanCycles

The sensor has no magnets in it. But the rotor has 4 pedals on it... but I believe the rotor is a single magnet in itself. I hope that helps!

Everything stopped? Even the tachometer? If all you're getting is lights, it could still be in the gauge, or the wiring.

I just recently swapped my forks out. I have a second gen and used gsxr750 forks (and a rear 600 shock as well) and will be converting the rear end to a gsxr rear wheel. I won't be able to put the speedo in the rear from what I am seeing. I haven't seen the rear wheel conversion kit in person so I cannot say definitively whether or not this type of solution will work. My idea is to cut out the sensor from its housing and see if it works with Nd magnets on the rotor. The rotating part of the 07 sv650 speedo has 8 metal chunks molded inside so my idea is that 8 magnets evenly spaced on my gsxr rotor will provide the correct rhythm at a given speed. I could purchase an aftermarket hall effect sensor kit, but where is the fun in that? If it works out, I'll make a video and share it with you.
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles 9 жыл бұрын
d Some magnets and a reed switch is all you need, hall effect sensor kit is better because its weatherproofed. I think the stock sensor had 4 magnets, though... if the speedo shows radically too high (doubled) than how fast you are going, remove half of them. :) Looking forward to your video.

+DuckmanCycles and VW Garage I have this issue, After fitting to rear wheel speedo says 80mph at about 40mph, How can I correct this? will removing 2 of the blades work?
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles 8 жыл бұрын
+tonupharry I can't see it to make a proper call, but if you copied my setup (the comment you replied from D uses a different setup) then it sounds like maybe the little magnetic rotor got broken or chipped. That'll give it more petals, and will register as too high of a speed. You shouldn't have to modify it from original unless its broken. But start by looking there.
@tonupharry

+DuckmanCycles and VW Garage My original sensor had a broken petal but worked fine. I bought another sensor (supposedly from same model) it looked identical,,,,I cut the cable from my original sensor to get the extra cable I needed...so my guess is that the sensor Ive now fitted is from a different model,,,Ive ruined the original pickup,,,,so wondered how I can save the situation, where are the magnets located?
@tonupharry
@tonupharry 8 жыл бұрын
Ok ive found the magnets it appears that I have 4 in the main body of my old broken rotor, the petals are only there to locate with wheel. I will try using my old rotor, when it stops raining.in.Uk..see how that turns out.
