@@mehranalam1274 He developed methods of testing archaic DNA (destroyed, chemically altered, in over 99% contaminated by fungal and bacterial DNA, shredded into very small pieces), sequenced the DNA of Neanderthals, sequenced the DNA of Denisovans (his team discovered this species of archaic human). His research proved that anatomically modern humans have admixture of genes from nenaderthals and denisovans, so in the past there have been crossbreeding. He studied the differences between the genomes of humans and related species, thanks to which it was possible to select genes where there is no admixture of genes from nenaderthals and denisovans (so for some reason human variant was very strongly preferred in natural selection), or genes that we we took over (so there is also very strong preference in natural selection). He was also able to identify the effects of several such genes. He actually created a whole new field of science - the study of archaic DNA.

@@mehranalam1274 he found a way to view the DNA of Neanderthals and Denisovas and compare how they are different than ours and what percentage of our DNA comes from them because we existed together at some point and mated with each other so some of us share DNA with them. This was not possible before because the other scientists couldn't isolate those DNAs before to study them properly. His study also aims to show how our immune systems are different than each other because of how much Neanderthal or Denisova DNA we carry. For example, many Africans do not have Neanderthal or Denisova DNA because homo sapiens (us) originated in Africa while Neanderthals lived in Europe, and he aimed to draw a comparison how pure homo sapiens from Africa are more immune to diseases like Covid compared to Europeans who had more Neanderthal DNA and thus his study is suggesting an explanation for the extinction of Neanderthals and Denisovas due to diseases that could have wiped them out while we homo sapiens had the superior immune system to fight off and survive

Neanderthals are closely related to Homosapiens.

1. It was thought that, although we had some fossilized remains, it would be impossible to extract the DNA of ancient Hominids (say, older than 10,000 years). Pääbo developed a method for extracting such DNA -- he is the pioneer of the science called PALEOGENOMICS. 2. Pääbo proved that every human being who has non-African ancestry carries some (2% - 4%) Neanderthal DNA. (People who are of purely African origin don't have it.) This went against the previous belief that Homo Sapiens were so different from Homo Neanderthalensis that they could not have productive offspring (only deadends like impotent Ligers -- Lion+Tiger mix). 2. We have known for quite some time that 30,000 - 40,000 years ago there was a Hominid species called Neanderthals, living in Europe and the middle East. Svante Pääbo discovered that in fact, around that same period, there was another Hominid species -- called Denisovans -- living in Europe. He also demonstrated that some of us Homo Sapiens carry some Denisovan DNA as well.

Neanderthal Man, the book that outlines the process of how they did this is a great read. The spin off technologies, the envelopes they pushed befit us all today. DNA from 40,000 yr old bones. Amazing.
