Sailing SV Delos

Күн бұрын

In this episode we sail through the roaring 40s and it was crazy! Definitely the most intense part of our 3000NM passage from South Africa to La Reunion. We had wind speeds of over 50kn, 23-32ft (7-10m) waves and in the middle of everything our autopilot breaks and it’s hand steering from now on! A bit of a tester as our new crew have not hand steered before. Our whole world was getting slammed and tossed around in the waves and I think Brady described it pretty well “It feels like if your driving a car, with your eyes closed on a bumpy dirt road for days. Knowing your going to hit a tree but not knowing when you’re going to hit that tree. So all of a sudden you’re just driving and BOOM!“
Get ready for some hectic weather :D hope you Like!
Much Love, Karin, Brian and Mr Brady!

Sailing SV Delos intense weather no doubt my grand illusion of crossing oceans has been dashed there's no way I could do it. Watching you guys get pounded pushed shoved and bombarded with those sounds that are around you would drive me crazy. I just came back from a three day trip to Ensenada Mexico we left last Friday in a storm surge with 50 to 60 mile an hour winds. No Bueno

I'd call it a heavy 9 and saw some sea condition near a 10. Was in an Atlantic force 12 hurricane on an LST in the service many moons ago, a simple NC to PR passage turned into a real rodeo and a two week brutal event

OMG! I FEAR the Southern Ocean & the Roaring 40's just because of videos like this. But, I only get gut scared when a boat starts looking like a cork in the sea. The Super Maramu 2000 never looked out of control- always tracking, even when being hit with a large rogue from the side? What a friggin' boat! Best. Investment. Ever.

Man, mad respect to you all! That's some really balls deep sailing... Everyone aboard earned their stripes on that passage. I will say that I always find it a little bit less scary at night in similar conditions compared to daytime, when you actually have a visual of the beasts around you. Once again thank you for showing the realities of long passage making, good, bad, and butt clenching!!!!! Cheers.

Stryke vegabond is more of a daycare nowadays. Kinda annoying for some, but I guy future parents that sail would enjoy knowing what it's all about having a child on a boat. Personally I don't think it's fair to make a kid hang out with his/her parents only, socializing in school is important I think. That being said, I'm not gonna say I couldn't raise a good kid with my partner cause we would make a super cool kid. It's just seems unfair to it because it can't decide what it wants yet. Kinda like big dogs on a little boat. Sure they love you more than anything , but my dogs have more fun, hands down, three dogs makes a solid pack and being able to run and play in the bush, hunt squirrels and chipmunks all day while I work, it's the greatest life a dog could ask for. Free roam all the time, no collars, no leash , ever. Jeez you know I just thought, maybe sailing wherever you want, only the winds directing you is the ultimate freedom. Fuck man I need some sleep.

By far the best footage anyone has ever made of sailing in BIG SEAS . You've captured the, size ,speed and the nature of the beast. Show us just how tiny you are in this keg of kick ass. At times, dragging the keel sideways through the waves while moving 20 knots forward . This is a video that I will watch over and over . Breath taking and stunning at the same time 👍🏻👍🏻

This video brings back memories of when I was in Hurricane Guilda, years ago. We sailed from Sandy Hook, NJ to Cape Hattaras in 36 hours, surfing down 30 footers in 70+kt winds before our rudder broke in the 29ft Piver Tri-maran. Thank you for reminding me to never do that again! I will now live thru your videos instead of ever going to sea again... Mitch - Annapolis, MD

Your storm experience takes me back to a 36 hour storm we endured aboard our 40 foot Manta Catamaran while crossing the Gulf of Mexico a few years back. We had sustained 50 Kts and gusts over 65 Kts for 26 hours of the storm. I never felt afraid, but there were several times when I just wanted to crawl into a hole and cry! I remember being so excited when the winds finally moderated in to the high 20's. This episode took me back there - almost like a Vietnam Vet reliving a firestorm... I THINK that's a compliment? Oh hell, it's definitely a compliment. Nice Job!

8:10-10:30 the choice of music with video editing absolutely amazing and genius! Suggestion for you and fellow sailors; For the subwoofer and such items I suggest investing in 3M™ Dual Lock™" reclosable fastener" tape. Its self adhesive industrial grade Velcro that instead of hooking into the opposite fabric as traditional Velcro does it has mushroom shape steps that lock into place and up to 5 times stronger than the best Velcro. It's used on such applications on planes, the space shuttle, rockets, tanks, battleships, and industrial equipment on items and panels that can't use fasteners or be permanently affixed. Seen it used in sports as well in football helmets and prosthetics. I learned about it in the medical field on specialty beds we used to invert, suspend, or rotate patients. The adhesive doesn't destroy the surface it's used on either. Safe solvents like your waste alcohol from your still will cut its residue. Just my 2cents worth that can hopefully help someone out that doesn't want to fasten screws, brackets, or strapping to their boats finish work.

Great, great video. Intense, it was. I felt it. Very happy that you all survived the trip. About the autopilot repair, the guy who services our car just replaces everything in sight when something goes wrong or it's getting a bit old. It costs abit more for parts and a little less for his time but then we benefit from the new system. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I am learning so much about living aboard.

I agreee, I've been commenting that this should be picked up by a network....no involvement...just licensing....but this YT channel definitely is network quality and has large appeal. That said the network involvement could be a source for a large more filtered pool of "crew" to choose from....imo the crew and relationship dynamics are very important...previous crew highlighted this. Concept of Core crew and rotating out crew is cool...but quality of rotating crew needs to be high....not sure if sailing skill or "production" skills are more important. lol

These Indian Ocean videos (both on the way to Africa and since leaving) have captured intense blue water sailing better than anything else I've ever seen. Also on an Amel, same build as SV Delos, it is uncanny the similar events. We ducked under Madagascar a few degrees north of your route, Reunion>Cape Town. Similar heavy weather. Found myself in 45knot winds, swell crashing on deck, pelting rain, dealing with line stowage breaking loose about the mast. (lost a 15kg solar panel to a wave hit even) Sitting there hugging the mast with my legs like a rodeo cowboy, totally drenched, kinda had a zen moment as a sailor. Serious reminiscing watching the vid guys! Cameras never do the swell justice - I know how big those waves are ;) We renamed the cockpit "The Pool deck". Look forward to your observations on Reunion. Wonder if your guys will/have hit up Rodrigues?

The new guys and gal have balls of steel, I don't think you guys were ever in seas that big with last crew except maybe on last run across Indian Ocean. I can't believe none of them is screaming to get the hell off the boat. If I'm ever well off enough and decide to get SV I have a whole new respect for your Amel.

That's some intense badass sailing. Feeling a little guilty for calling myself a sailor for riding those sea states on an Aircraft carrier...USS Enterprise.

5 Atlantic crossings, a sinking on the Isle Europa, rescued by the French Navy. Been there, done that. Great life though. Your vessel is far more luxurious than the vessels I sailed on.

I've been traveling around for some time now the "traditional" way by planes and trains, working along the way to keep myself sustained. These videos reaaallly make me excited to give different ways of traveling a try. Especially sailing! Thanks guys for being inspiration and showing it is possible!

Brain, a good diagnostic flow to use is symptom, system, component, cause. You skipped the last step on the auto pilot :-) first identify the symptom. can be obvious or not so obvious. then identify the system that is malfunctioning. again can be obvious or not so obvious identify the part/component that is damaged find out WHY it's damaged. sometimes it's just a wear item such as belts or brushes but if you've got more than just normal wear you should look a little deeper during diagnostics than just replacing the damaged part. I was taught this in automotive/diesel college. Cheers!

That weather starting at 10 minutes on was crazy. Great b-roll of the stormy seas and nice editing. Looked like between 8 and 9 on the Beaufort scale. Glad to see SV Delos made it safety to harbor. All the best to the Delos crew. Cheers!

It's great to watch sailors in the making. Also, amazing that this type of sailing initiation is not easy for all parties. It's made to work on Delos because of great attitudes on everyone's part.

Know this is an old one, but I had to comment; this is some of the most nautical sailing I've ever seen on a sailing video! I've never seen anyone capture how high the seas can get and depths of the trough as you have in this video. Great depiction of what pitch and role really means in high seas! Hopefully your having fair winds and following seas where you are today!

One boat sales East and another sales West by the self same winds that blow t's the set of sale and not the strong gale that determine the way they go. Beaufort wind force 9. A very addictive 'reel- time' documentary Delos. Love the captivating music. God speed.

I hear the word "jussus" and see Savannas in the hold and I just know it's gonna be lekker! Took a 39ft Roberts from CT to Albany Aus, 35 days at sea, 2 massive storms, a seized engine and a concussed skipper later. Consider yourselves part of a very elite club!

Great video of the extreme conditions in the roaring 40"s. Delos can take a real pounding. You had 5 system failures over two weeks (leaking bow thruster, shorted electric motor, failure of the auto pilot, smoking sat phone, dead SSB) and a knockdown or two in consistent force 8 conditions. The ultimate adventure holiday for Delos's new crew. Zero to salty sailors in two weeks! My hat is off to you all. TheFair winds & following seas.
