Barrymore was a great actor, able to transfer from silents to sound and be a great lead actor. And Marian Marsh was simply lovely, gorgeous; she does love him and will die with him.

Great Video. I think that it's, if not his best, one of the best John Barrymore performances ever. I'd wondered where I had seen the Actor that portrays Billie before, then I realized his brilliant 5 minute performance, as the Professor that goes out of his mind, after Boris Karloff (in The Mummy (1933)) gets restored to life, after he reads The Scroll.

An extraordinary film in many respects, not the least of which is John Barrymore's staggering performance, but certainly a film that deserved its nomination for Best Cinematography. I'll have to see Tabu to see how it could have lost. I worked in opera and the coloraturo soprano who provided the singing for Trilby was amazing.

Barrymore modelled his make up after George du Maurier's illustrations from the book. It's also the first film to use Bausch-Lomb contacts. And - no one was right for this role than Marian Marsh. She's amazing!
