I wonder if the theory of the placebo effect was known when this was filmed. I didn't know how good of a character actor Barrymore was. He is completely unrecognizable from most of the other characters i have seen him play.

Around 1:08:26 JBs line "Sir, I am impervious to flattery." is the best line in the entire movie. That along with his facial expressions and body movements illustrate what a great actor he was.

I love this film. I salute you for posting it. Myrna Loy was a dear friend from 1961 until her death. I was 14 when I met her. My mother was her agent at MCA and invited her to dinner. She was not only beautiful, a delightful actor but a remarkable and loving human being. This is one of her many fine films pre the great MGM days. People tend to remember more the exotic roles before MGM but she actually did some very unique and intelligent films like this one. She actually had a small part in the semi silent version of Don Juan also with Barrymore. He was difficult and sadly a drunk but was a consummate actor and she learned much from him.

It's nice to be reminded of this :) P.S. I love seeing Myrna Loy in other than Thin Man movies--she was a natural in all the different roles she played, as she is in "Topaz"!

Jack Barrymore was so good in everything that he did. It's mesmerizing to watch Ethel, Lionel and Jack in anything. Myrna Loy told a story to Dick Cavett about being snubbed by Barrymore on the first day of cast introductions. They had known each other since Don Juan (1926). She complained to the producer and the next day there was a knock on her door. It was Barrymore and he apologized profusely for the other night but he was seeing three of her and didn't know which one to approach.

@@theresaholguin699 Since you weren't there you don't know that he was. Gable was rude to Loy & snubbed her on their 1st movie together (he was chasing another actress) but they became great friends & co-stars. Barrymore was a notorious lady's man, a terrified Hepburn greeted him with "My father doesn't want me to get pregnant!", Astor was a child, but he & Garbo got along from the get-go. Wasn't Loy an extra in silents? No wonder star wouldn't remember his now leading lady.

Excellent movie, script and iconic actors. This movie was engaging yet not judgemental and the ending had a surprise twist. This is because it was pre code in that era and simply told a story sans moralizing. This is beyond excellent and it was great seeing Barrymore and Loy act together. Please watch n draw your own conclusions. I rate this a golden 10 and highly recommend it.

@@one4allfour1 My God man, I'm flabergasted! No one speaks so eloquently anymore as the actors in this movie. It's an indictment against our school systems, our mainstream media and our 'civilization' as a whole. I am also personally ashamed for the way I speak. This movie should be preserved on that merit alone, if for no other reason. Aside from that, the 'one liners' and humor are priceless. If this movie premiered now in theaters, everyday people wouldn't understand it. They're that dumbed down. Thank you...Thank you for sharing this fine gem! It was a riot! 🇺🇸 😎👍 ☕

Made for RKO just before David O Selznick left the studio to start as an independent, it borrowed major stars like John Barrymore and Myrna Loy, plus veteran supporting players like Jobyna Ralston, who made the mave from silent to sound. "Man, Woman and Sin: Twice Daily!!" A nice dig at the soon-to-be Hays/Breen Code, which would make realistic storylines near impossible for better than three decades. So good that Selznick purchased the film later from RKO.

john barrymore was amazing, rarely does he not out-act everyone on set. the story gets a little disjointed in an effort to afford barrymore his big scenes, but not many could do it so convincingly so why not? and despite all his personal problems he was one of the best. poor myrna loy and leading ladies of her day, playing a love interest to someone 58 and 50, she was 28.

She would co-star with younger Monty Clift & Paul Newman in middle age, they were in fact great friends. Loy & others were hired by MGM partly to give lumps of beef like the great Spencer Tracy some sex appeal onscreen.

Ditto, and I have to revise upward my opinion of Barrymore. I do wish though that Dr Topaze hadn't quite so abandoned his ideals. If he had ensured (or attempted to ensure) that his bottled water was pure then I would have been more than satisfied.

LJ W Yes!! 🙂Most of us have been in character determining situations, or will experience important turning points where we have to make moral and ethical choices--quickly or over time--which alter our lives and the lives of (always!!) those around us. I love this story because it is thought-provoking and may cause us to do some soul-searching. It definitely has done this to me (and each time I re-watch, I learn and am challenged a little more!) PLUS--Barrymore's character makes me laugh--in a good way😄

No other actor had the range that Jack Barrymore had. That was brilliant, and probably his best year in film with "Dinner at Eight" and "Counselor at Law" too. Boy! Could the USA learn from a film like this.

I'm so glad to find others like you who appreciate Mr. Barrymore's amazing talent. I loved this movie because it showed me much more of his acting ability, since I'd loved him in "Dinner At Eight" and "Grand Hotel". As for "Topaze" the story, I was thoroughly surprised at the pathos (I'm stickin' to that word ;), irony, and humor of this story. I just had to share this rarely-seen Classic Movie :)) Thanks for visiting my Channel, Dave. Have a great day!

Amanda Contreras~ I'm so glad you liked "Topaz", Amanda! It's such a great story in so many ways I wish I could stop every Classic movie lover (and every 30-something young person) to stop a while and watch this one! It's touching, thoughtful and in soooo many ways, funny (and ironic) ;D It took me by surprise! Such a great script and actors made this Classic stand-out for me--very memorable--I just had to spotlight it :). I'll keep looking for more movies like this, Amanda~you keep watching ;) Have a great evening!

I LOVE this movie, too! I just had to find it and upload it for you to see! It so amazed me that the story mirrored everything we read about today! (90 years ago!) I just loved the humor and pathos of Mr. Barrymore’s character and situations. And the Truths reflected in the story are age-less! It sure helps to teach us that people are the same, no matter how many decades pass.
