The Allegro Agitato Molto and especially Harmoniesdu Soir are very good; in the latter Richter really seems to believe in the music and is painting a real story. In the rest of the pieces Richter really plays between uninspired and over-the-top fast.

Richter was aknowledged for his high quality playing in live recitals everywhere in the world, and at his superb playing on ipmerfect pianos, albeit a lot of people criticise him for small "flaws". He had a different approach to the etudes colse to Cziffra's and that's why they stand out. No comparison with today's "pop" pianists.

The Wilde Yagd seems to be the main point of discussion surrounding this recording! I personally love it, no-one else carries more frenzy and adrenaline (consider the title of the piece!) than Richter. Even if not entirely spotless, there's a brutality and torrentiality which I'm unable to find elsewhere, and I find myself continuously inspired by his breakneck, manic pace through the second theme in my own interpretation.

This is the comparatively young swashbuckling Richter. I have to say in his early career before he triumphed in the West some of his tempi were pretty wild. While there are of course some pianistic marvels (Feux Follets) there are also some splashes, aggressive hitting and rushed phrasing, ie Wilde Jagd.

I'm going to be judgmental about No. 8. he totally rushed through it. It's like he was trying to keep perfect tempo for a piece that absolutely needs good interpretation to really produce what I think Liszt wanted.
@scherzox

Seriously it's like he's playing to a metronome that's set to a tempo way too high. He murders the sweet middle passage that has so much emotion. That might be my favorite small piece of piano in my life and somehow I can't recognize it.

Simply dreadful. Never mind the wrong notes. The rushing kills the music. Nos. 2 and 8 are the worst on record. By far. Nos 3 and 7 are the only listenable ones, and even they are rushed and bland. I know I'm supposed to praise to the skies the "Great Richter". Sorry, can't oblige. I care too much for Liszt. And this is certainly not Liszt. This is travesty. But let us be grateful for small mercies - four etudes were spared.
