SWAM CELLO V.3 - A REDEFINING UPGRADE !!

Welcome dear subscribers and new guests at The Creation Station, this is a deep look at the BRAND SPANKING NEW Version 3.0 update from Audio Modeling and their Solo Strings Line.

Very nice expose of this new version. I like the way you think, the way you investigate. You know your stuff! These instruments by Audio Modeling are truly remarkable. I’ve been working with samples since the 8o’s and this, to me, is the future.

String players will continue vibrato as long as the string resonates, I do. It's normal except for open strings, of course. There's nothing particularly natural about delaying vibrato. We string players often start our vibrato before starting the bow. You should have the option of being able to start with vibrato immediately. Not fretboard, fingerboard. Sordino doesn't sound great, just muffled. A mute would have a very different sound. It does sound like an EQ difference.

I can appreciate musicians speaking truth to their instrument. What is funny is that most people have no clue anyway. What sounds close is great for them. To play beautiful instruments with buttons is the future, for sure. It's been being realized throughout my lifetime. Pretty damn cool looking back. Being a drummer I didn't look fondly upon midi in my teens. Now I'm inundated with it. It's good fun.

Thanks Stephan! I can't rely on some of these demos on the scene. If you are a beginner violinist then SWAM will sound like a beginner violinist. But you know how to make it sing and so I'm able to see how awesome the AM strings are really. Instant subscribe!

the vibrato issue is easy to fix, they can multiply the vibrato parameter by the gate in

You got vibrato on the g-note, because your alternate-fingering is set to mid-position.

... couldn't you attach the to the vibrato control to have the up or off stroke turn the vibrato off? Possibly a work around?

I’ve been playing with ver 3.0 for a bit so was glad to have stumbled on your review; Firenze is my favorite too. You can find vibrato delay under the Advanced tab designated as Vibrato Fade In. I’m a wind player, so lots of fun to play such a beautiful cello on an EWI.

I tried a trial of version three and can't hear much difference between it and version two. To my mind this should be a free upgrade rather than a paid one.

You may be right - I skipped version 2 because I was happily using V 1 in tons of productions.

@@RideTheFuture Actually I looked at your video on working with sampled Cello and the version you're using there is Version 2. So maybe this IS an improvement. I need to upgrade anyway, because V2 is not native to M1 Macs, and the new version seems to have a few features not available on V2. Thank you for this video.

What a great instrument and thanks Stephan for a great demo that makes a very compelling case for purchase! It's a pity that on the main performance page it has marked "Alternate fingering" which of course means you use one fingering and the a different one and then go back to the first. If there wasn't room to write "Alternative fingering" (which is what I believe they mean) then "Alt. fingering" would be a much better and more compact solution. This is the future, when high end sampling and top modelling can absorb each other's benefits we'll have perfection. Surely a job for AI....?

Hello Stephan, congratulations on another great video.Have you ever tried Virharmnic Bohemian cello. IMO ithe sound and playability are incredible. The only drawback is it’s loading time., There is also a new update coming out very soon.

Thanks for the review. What are you using to control pitch bend in this review? It looks like you are using the pitch bend wheel on the keyboard. Just wanted to check.

Can someone please help with how I can get this setup? I have a laptop and kontakt standalone player full version and a yamaha midi keyboard. I connected via midi/usb cable. I see the virtual keyboard and it plays cello when I click on it with mouse, but my yamaha keyboard plays the default piano sound. No cello is transferred from PC to yamaha keyboard. I went through the settings and changed settings but nothing worked.

Bijan this plugin is not a Kontakt Instrument - but I think what you are saying is that you have a cello sound in Kontakt and the keyboard signal is not reaching it. Go to the Kontakt preferences and make sure (under MIDI) that your keyboard shows up as a source!

Hi David I sure did! You know, if I am in this technology and haven't figured out the automation, I'd clearly should better be a bar pianist (no offense - I used to play for a living when I was young ;)

”Rosin.. whatever that is?” Then let me enlighten you. Rosin is a substance applied on the hair of the bow with the function to increase the friction between the bow and the string. It is kind of sticky and makes it a lot easier to make the string vibrate than without it. Without rosin the hair can’t get any grip at all. Try to play with a rehaired bow with absolutely no rosin on it and you’ll know what I mean.

Thanks Marcus you explained that very well. I do, however, know quite well what Rosin is - I don't quite follow how SWAM adds it to their sound as I can barely tell the difference. Wish I could dial in even more of that stuff ;-) All my best !

@@RideTheFuture Hi Stephan, being a double bass player for over 35 years I couldn’t help writing the comment. I hope you didn’t take offense. I agree that the slider gives very subtle changes, but for me it’s crucial to have as much control of the sound as possible, rather than having an on off switch. I like these VSTi’s a lot but they are demanding to use. I think you did a very good review so a big thank you for that.

If the vibrato would go to zero by software, by the end of the note, the modwheel on your hardware keyboard would need to go to zero too and this isn't technically possible i guess.
