This is like the next evolution if the virtual acoustic technology in the Yamaha VL1 and VL70m. Yamaha then dropped the tech for the last twenty years unfortunately, now we have this great, improved virtual instrument tech available for our computers and iPads.

Hi Dan!! Stefano is the master of expression pedal :-) Indeed, you can control SWAM with any expressive controller, even MPE (like the Seaboard or LinnStrument). For example, there are a few videos on the Internet of people playing with Leap Motion or Breath Controller, combined with a keyboard. Our instruments are really flexible and they can adapt smoothly to the player's needs.

This is a collection of VST plugins. The setup you own works already. The best result is with an expression pedal or breath controller. If you don’t have one or the other, I suggest to purchase it. Otherwise, you can use the knobs on the AKAI mpk

What's the best to use to get the same results ?? this keyboard?? a breath controller or a seaboard??
@AudioModeling5 жыл бұрын
Sylvain Paquette it really depends on your playing style and on your level of control. The keyboard used here is a standard keyboard controller (indeed is a synth, but here they are just using it as MIDI controller). When playing with a standard keyboard, you need a good Expression pedal (plus ModWheel and PitchBend). Breath Controller it’s really good for playing wind instruments, but also for bowed strings if breathing properly. Seabord is really good but takes a steep learning curve on how to control it, especially for legato transitions. Search “Seaboard SWAM” or “Breath Controller SWAM” on KZbin to find videos about the combinations of SWAM with those controllers
@sylvainpaquette64855 жыл бұрын
@@AudioModeling Thanks for your explanation. i'm guessing that my m-audio axiom 64 can make good results as long as connected with an expression pedal and a breath controller attached to it??
@AudioModeling5 жыл бұрын
@@sylvainpaquette6485 exactly! If you use a standard MIDI keyboard, you absolutely need an expression pedal, or breath controller, or Leap Motion, or any expressive controller that can satisfy your way to play. Note that, except for the expression pedal, you cannot attach those controllers to your keyboard, you have to connect them to your computer and combine the MIDI events coming from both the keyboard and the expressive controller (i.e. selecting both as MIDI sources)
@sylvainpaquette64855 жыл бұрын

This Swam Tenor is close… but, still no Cigar… When I first played and sampled with a Synclavier in the ol’ days… tried to sample my sax… (also tried Fairlight)… Even with those, most of the time sounded like a kazoo or a Hoover Vacumn… and that was with Multi-sampling on every note…You might get a few notes to sound correct, but when you stretch the sample you'd lose (or add) overtones that aren’t on the real instrument. You would have to sample each note… individually… at least 10 to 15 times (with different attacks, harmonics, growl, hard tongue, soft tongue …etc.) THEN have the ability to play the variances… Which IS possible with a WX, EWI, etc. with the proper controller settings… However, until someone comes up with a realistic-sounding (REALLY sounds like a sax… up and down the horn, from Top to Bottom note… we sax players are safe… at least Solo saxes… This Swam is great… mixed within a section… however is still lacks the true sax sound of a solo horn.
@meldavis71834 жыл бұрын
On another wind instrument I found the the nasal frequency that screws up TENOR sax. Normally that frequency is between 800 to 1500 hz. I think swam probably is around that. If there's an eq control I'd set a narrow band eq boost & sweep across the frequencies until you find the nasal frequency then cut at frequency. Roland aerophone ae10 has that eq feature. Still I like the swam approach to the saxophones.
@kingslaphappy15334 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. To my ears (I play alto sax) it’s the closest i have heard to the real thing and adding realism to the part played lies in the skill of the player/programmer laying down the track. Also, using an MPE controller and modulating several parameters in real time really helps to render a “mostly” realistic sax part especially when blended with other instruments.
@patzicari36044 жыл бұрын
@@kingslaphappy1533 I partially AGREE with you... my last line was, "This Swam is great… mixed within a section… however it still lacks the true sax sound of a solo horn." In a sax section or with other horns, to most ears, these “pass” but, as SOLO instruments, close but no cigar... the multitudes of timbres and variances of EACH note, and the hundreds of way it can be attacked and tongued, really can not be duplicated with either a wind driver OR breath controller... FYI... am not talking just off the top of my head... I've been programming synths and sequencing since the '70s... played Nyle's first EWI (before he sold it to Akai)... Lyricon (with Bernardi)... Synclavier, Moog, Arps, etc., and been Writing, Engineering, and Programming for recordings, TV, and Movies since the '70s... My first sax recording session was in the '60s... and you've heard me on quite a few hits... I created a Horn Section sample... and had to use it on a Melrose Place session (the other horns were hung up in another session). When they heard the section, they asked the Contractor who did it... he pointed to my rack and said I did... They said if I EVER sold it to anyone, they would "take care of me"... kiddingly, I think.. In a SECTION… FINE As a SOLO instrument… NOT... in the opinion of an Engineer, Producer, Sax Player

Expression is assigned by default to MIDI CC11, which it is usually sent by a foot pedal connected to a MIDI keyboard controller. Usually there is no additional configuration to do. If your foot pedal sends events on a different MIDI CC number, go to Options / MIDI mappinf, press Learn and move the foot pedal: the correct MIDI CC will be assigned automatically

All these people pointing out the elephant in the room are completely missing the point. Midi is not trying to make real musical instruments obsolete or put session musicians and bands out of buisness. For live events or playing in a Jazz band they will always want a saxophonist but let hobbyists settle for doing everything inside the box with midi.
