Swami is a movie about a girl name Saudamini who lives with her mother and uncle after losing her father. She is a bright village girl with academic ambitions and an appetite for literature and philosophy. She is in love with her neighbour but due to some circumstances she gets married to a wheat trader against her wishes. She finds it difficult to adjust with her new life, husband and in-laws. Since I am a Bengali woman and Sarat Chandra is one of my most favourite novelists, I had the opportunity to read this book when I was in university. Loved ghanashym after reading this marvellous novella. Nowadays as a busy working woman and mother of two children, at first I thought I would not watch this masterpiece. So lucky I am, I have amended my decision. Basu Chatterjee is really a gem. He could pull up the undertone with his flawless direction. Shabana Azmi, Girish Karnad and Utpal Dutt were at their best.
