Since I am a Bengali woman and Sarat Chandra is one of my most favourite novelists, I had the opportunity to read this book when I was in university. Loved ghanashym after reading this marvellous novella. Nowadays as a busy working woman and mother of two children, at first I thought I would not watch this masterpiece. So lucky I am, I have amended my decision. Basu Chatterjee is really a gem. He could pull up the undertone with his flawless direction. Shabana Azmi, Girish Karnad and Utpal Dutt were at their best. Love from Bangladesh ❤️🩷

Beautiful film. The raw emotions of love and acceptance are so overpowering. So poignant! The story by Sarat Chandra stands the test of time but Basu Chatterji makes sure it stays pure and wholesome in his narration. Karnad in possibly his best performance ever shines as Ghanshyam and Utpal Dutt lights up the first part. The supporting cast is good especially Shasikala. But no one shines as bright as the brilliant Shabana Azmi epitomizing the strong educated Indian woman. I should have watched this film way earlier. Not sure how I missed it
