It's a Motorcraft 2150 2V carb. That intake manifold is cast iron so it's going to be rusty inside, that's not a problem. That carb spacer has the EGR valve on it. If you don't have emission testing on that age vehicle in your area you could replace it with a standard carb spacer. But you will need to cut out a 1/8" thick steel plate to put in under the spacer to block off the exhaust passage hole that feeds the EGR valve. If you don't you will have a exhaust leak. Yes that is the thermostat housing . That's where the thermostat should be. The spring part of the thermostat goes towards the engine. Flush the cooling system to remove as much of that gunk as possible. Do a search on different ways to flush it. you can use straight water from a water hose. Or there are chemical flushing compounds. I've even used vinegar. And with the engine tore down this far. Pull the 3 small bolts to remove the crankshaft pulley. Then pull the large crank bolt. Remove the washer off that bolt and then reinstall the crank bolt about half way to 2/3's the way. Then using a harmonic balancer puller to remove the balancer. Do not use a gear puller or hammer or pry bar to try and remove it. If you do, you will destroy the balancer. Once the balancer is off unbolt and remove the timing cover. There are the bolts around the perimeter of the cover and then a few that come up thru the bottom on the oil pan. Once the cover is off replace the timing set. If you don't you will be kicking yourself later, when you have to pull all the same crap off the engine to tear it down again to do it.

Might consider getting a timing chain and gear set.. The 360 and 390 FE engines often stretched the chains. That results in backfires through the manifold and general misfire issues. Water pump... C5 is 1965 casting date.. Ford used that pump for years in the FE block trucks, carrying into the mid 1970s. The Thermostat is indeed missing. Its possible that the housing needs replaced. Be careful when you install those, its possible to locate them wrong and snap the thermostat housing!

That water pump looks like it has a C5AE part number on it which would be from a 65 full size Ford (Galaxie or LTD.) Not sure if it would have been left over and put on at the factory or a replacement from a parts car would be more likely. Someone with a 65 Galaxie might want that water pump to rebuild and put on their restoration. The carb has a D4TE tag on it which would be from a 74 truck so most likely that is the original carb. Take that tag to the parts store and give it to the oldest guy behind the counter. He will know what rebuild kit you need. Most likely there is a rebuild kit that has parts for all variations of the Autolite 2100 series.

Those bolts with the flanged heads are "spin lock" bolts. They're used most often where an adjustment (such as belt tightening) or heavy vibration is anticipated. They make nuts like this too. The square hole in the A/C belt tightener is where you insert the end of your breaker bar to give leverage while you tighten the bolt. Very common in the pre-serpentine belt era! That drain bolt on the air conditioning compressor is where you fill the compressor with refrigerant oil. You don't fill it full, and you use special oil. The water pump has definitely been replaced. The original would have been in place when the engine was painted blue at the factory.
