Not proud of it but at 18 I went to prison and swan song was the first book I read there... That book got me into reading. Changed my life. Couldn't stop reading. Laid on my cot for 18 hours straight and finished it in one sitting. Thank you for the review

I couldn't put Swan Song down. Phenomenal. In my view better than The Stand as its impossible to avoid comparing the 2. I've since read 2 Robert McCammon novels and if that quality carries on, he'll soon be my favourite writer of all time

I have just started Swan Song for the first time. It is my summer challenge for myself and so far it is easier read. I read The Stand in high school and it just starts off soul crushing with the guard and his family. King is vary skilled at making you attach to character with in a page of two and he does it in the prologue and when you know were it is going it is hard to keep going. That said I am under hundred pages and Swan Song while not that slow death gut punch I am enjoying it.

This was one of my favorite reads this year, I got sucked right into it and couldn’t put it down. The characters are wonderful and I appreciated that there was so much heroism from folks that would generally be considered lowly in regular society. Underdogs. Found family.

I read this book like 20 years ago and it was one of the best apocalyptic books I ever read. My grandmother was a reader she loved horror books and science fiction among biographies. I’m so glad I picked that book up. I’m surprised we haven’t seen a movie about it. And haven’t heard anyone ever talk about it.

I read this book when it came out back in 87, I was 23 years old at the time. While I can’t remember much of the story I will always remember it being the best novel I’ve ever read and being a pretty voracious reader in my youth that was saying something. I finish reading it up north at a cottage during my summer vacation and feeling sad that the amazing story was over. I was just about to go to sleep and after all these years decided to look it up and see if I could find it as an audio book. I saw this posting and thought I’d just share this with the anonymous out there and agree, it was awesome adventure and experience that has stayed with me some 35 plus years later. Cheers 🤙🏼

It pales compared to The Stand and really feels like a lesser copy to me. He also clearly tried to borrow styles from McCarthy's incomparable Blood Meridian, which is embarrassing. It was a hot genre in the 80s and this guy is a good content writer but a storyline copycat and it's easy to see if you read the better works he tries to emulate. I read about a quarter, was bored and easily predicted what came next, then about halfway I just put it down.

I have read both books, and multiple times. BUT. Swan Song, and Robert McCammon is by far my fabourite author. His character development is outstanding, and he not only creates the world, but also allows you into the human feeling of the world. When he describes a tree being bare, and dead, you not only see it, but you FEEL the emotion of the character seeing that tree. You get their fear, their love, and their journey. You understand why they are on the journey they are on. Even the villians. You may be shocked, but their journey makes sense!

This review was a fantastic trip down memory lane for me. I read this back in 2017, and it's rare that I re-read books, but Swan Song is for sure a candidate. I read this before I read The Stand for the first time. When I finally read The Stand in 2018, I caught the similarities -- but like you say, they could be neighbors. I loved them both separately without having to compare them. I read The Fireman earlier this year, and that's another one that get the unfair Stand comparisons. But I'm here to tell you that Fireman is yet another book that is great all on its own (with a few 'nods' to Stand, but that's all it is).

I definitely think Swan Song is much better than The Stand. And not just because of sentimental reasons (I remember my mom reading it when it came out when I was a kid and telling me how amazing it was). Got it when it was first released and loved it. Lost it in a breakup somewhere along the way... Recently found a copy in one of the Little Free Libraries in my neighborhood. I was ecstatic. Anyone interested in apocalyptic fiction should check out Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank. It is perhaps the first nuclear war novel, originally published in 1959. Not a "horror story," but a good read. It was the book that stirred my fascination with such tales.

One thing that RMC does better (FAR better) than any other author I've ever read is character development. The connection, the understanding, the empathy - even the villains, you can understand how they got to the position they are in, as repulsive as it may be. Yes, you get throw-away characters that are 'just bad', but that's why they are throw-away characters. They don't have a purpose other than plot service, they are not part of the actual plot. His understanding of what is compelling to character development is truly unmatched. Wolf's Hour should be a read in your near future. - never will lycanthropy be so, not just possible, but probable. Then you have Usher's Passing - a true masterpiece of character arcs.

I'm an odd one in that I don't care for post-apocalyptic or horror novels, but I love Stephen King with every fiber of my reading being. I feel like he's an exception though because who wouldn't love Stephen King? I like historical fiction novels, mysteries some (Follett, Conroy, Archer, Sheldon, Grisham etc. Anyway, I just finished Swan Song because of this review when I first watched it many months back, so I bought it and placed it on my TBR. Robert McCammon is another one right there with SK. He's so good, and I just got lost in Swan Song, needing another book just like it. I also recently finished Boys Life after taking some vacation for reading. Phenomenal books, 100%, and highly recommend this author. On a side note, I live near a HFB that has/had a hardback copy of Swan Song, it actually has a drawing version of Swan herself on the cover. I think it was $500 and for kicks I asked the manager if he'd budge on the price and he said "not even a cent". I wouldn't have bought it anyway, I just know the guy and he often works me on records. The last one was a 2010 Jay-Z vinyl that also included a 10in single, complete with the hype sticker. It had a price of $220-ish and he sold to me for $150. Two weeks later I sold it $700. My best return ever on a single album. Forgive me, I have no idea why I'm including this in a comment about my reading of Swan Song.

Can't remember if you have read it, but The Road by Cormac McCarthy is an excellent, if very bleak, look at a post-apocalyptic world. You can just smell and taste the ruin in his words.
