I use to hang out in Yorkville when I was a teen (many years ago). Saw Joni Mitchell perform in a coffee house before she became a big star. Buffy Saint Marie as well. Those days are long gone now.

Thanks Johnny. What a beautiful part of the city! One Sunday in the late 60's my parents took we kids for a drive from Cambridge to look at Toronto. One of neighbourhoods we drove through was Yorkville, specifically to see the Hippies. It was fascinating!

My dad lives further north on Hazelton Ave, just a little before you hit Davenport. He was a partner in a well known recording studio, Nimbus Nine/Soundstage, also on Hazelton, just immediately north of Scollard. It's not there anymore, but it was the same studio where Peter Gabriel recorded his first solo album after leaving Genesis. Other notable artists such as Bob Seger and Alice Cooper also recorded there in the late 70s. Almost ancient history at this point. Lol

Too bad you can't go back in time to see the place in its Hayday. It wa fascinating. One suggestion. Take an evening harbour cruise and show the city from the water as the lights come on.

Toronto's Yorkville (so-called) 'Village' is a shadow of it's former self. I remember it well from the Sixties when there were used to be coffee houses, interesting music venues, groovy boutiques, art galleries, independent book stores, artist studios, ethnic restaurants and the like. Now it's like any other up-scale area of any city in North America. A sad conglomeration of: luxury hotels, expensive apartment buildings and condos, up-scale restaurants, designer boutiques and the like. The lure for Russian oligarchs and their molls, drug dealers, crime, life-styles of the rich and famous types. Ho hum. Not only are we not the Little Apple, we're the Rotten Apple. Even Hollywood is more interesting!

More and more of our city (Toronto) is becoming like this. It's sad to see all the best cultural landmarks disappearing. College, Dundas and Queen are still full of cool places like this and we have to preserve them!

Hi Johnny, We normally just say Yorkville ( rather than Yorkville Village) so as not to confuse it with "The Village": over at Church and Wellesley.- whole different vibe! Wow, How did I miss H&M turning into a Fabricland ? That is a fairly new development. I was thinking, having just talked to a couple of students on the Go train this afternoon that you would get good views if you did a walk about around the evirons of U of T ,pointing out some landmarks and inexpensive restaurants , etc aimed for incoming first year students. Apparently , the new students are already having orientation meetings but when I spoke to a student and her mother just returning from their introduction to the campus today they had no idea about the area , The mom thought that there were no restaurants around there. .I think you would be able to help a lot of new students feel more comfortable after watching one of your excellent walks especially targeted for the campus area including where the subway are. Just a thought. Always enjoy seeing the city through your lens ( and it always looks cleaner somehow!)

That's probably not an inaccurate comparison to make. It used to be a pretty down to earth, funky hood. Maybe comparable to what Greenwich Village was in NYC. Not sure what happened to Greenwich Village, but the big money developers moved on Yorkville in the early 70s, and in fairly short order Yorkville had been boutiqued to within an inch of its life and it became... very expensive.

All the middle class nightclubs are gone It was a step up from the lsd pot smoking hippies of the 60's Now it is shopping for the richYorkville thrived in the 80'sIt was the best of times As was our precious Yonge and Bloor shop's Clothing that is not seen today unfortunately😮

Been ages since I walked downtown Toronto. But there was this "side street" I got on one time, and I found myself walking by store fronts with cars like Lamborghini and maybe Rolls Royce in the windows. And I'm thinking this must be a convenient location for the real money of Toronto. Previously all I really knew of the city was the massive South Asian population. Are those car dealerships still around? Or were the a short term thing that got "redeveloped""
