This was one of the main videos that helped me make the decision for a KLR, over all the rest of the motorcycles out there. I have had it for 3 years now. It has been amazing on the road. I am just now getting as good as these riders in this video, off road. And I just finished an hour and a half ride in 50 degree rain and it did great there too. I was suffering, but the bike did amazing, from 10mph on the trails, and 75mph on the highway home in the rain. In case this helps any of your viewers, (because these were the questions I had, 3 years ago): I am 39years old. I drove a harley for 11 years and this was my first off road bike ever. I am 6 ft and was 285lbs and now 225lbs It handled me while I was fat and now... that I am.... not as fat. That includes highway speed and tight trails. I put a 12 dollar Plano box on the back and still love it. The only upgrade I have made is the KLR Dash and it is amazing on the highway and looks awesome everywhere. I use the RAM phone mounts and it has never dropped my phone. I have dropped my bike 4 to 6 times (off road) and my phone has never moved I get 38mpg at 70mph which is about 5000 to 5300rpms I get 45 to 48 mpg if I am in 5th and going 55mph for long periods of time I just fill up before 200 miles on the tank and have never run out of gas. The stock rear tire sucked on and off road. It had no traction off road, and it wore down very fast in the first year of driving. I upgraded to a Mitas E-07 130/80B17 for the rear and a Michelin Anakee wild 90/90-21 for the front. (I hope i got those numbers right.) They both look amazing and do great on and off road. I can do everything in this video and they still look new after 2 years of driving on both of them. I look forward to getting some panniers but am scared that I am going to get them caught on a tree or stump while trail riding so haven't done it yet. I hope this helps someone out there. This video helped me and I would love to know I helped the guy that helped me find a dream motorcycle for myself and my family. My wife ended up getting a DR650 after I got this and I owe it all to Swanky Cat, and (Everide ADV.) Thanks so much!

Shinko 244. You will LOVE them, I threw them on my DR650 a couple years ago and I can't wait to put them on my KLR. They're 50/50, but they help with bad road conditions. Also great at grabbing gravel and twigs, I don't think I'll use anything else unless someone makes a tire just like 'em.

I definitely agree on the tires. The truth is anything works on road unless you’re trying to race it, but you’re not gonna be trying to race a KLR on the road do you need something to get from point a to point B and you could do that on nobby‘s if you wanted, do you want something that’s gonna deal with the weight of the bike and be good enough off-road and OK on road in my opinion. If you’re out there looking for Street performance I’m not sure a Keylor is what you want anyway. Off-road is a hard one and that’s why you’re gonna get stuck and have problems. You’re never gonna get stuck on road because your tire wasn’t good enough, you don’t want to go racing through the canyons dragging a knee But almost nobody writing a killer is going to do that anyway

I ran a set of D606 tires on my 16. Rear was awesome i got almost 5k out if it and I definitely recommend it.. the front however didn't last. I had to replace it after 1500 miles. I agree 100% with puck the tire for what you are riding. I just swapped my dead 606 for a set of Shinko 705s because I'm doing alot of highway with my klr right now and they are amazing. The D606 is buzzy at highway speed and will wear you out.

I wish I'd changed sprockets on mine before I took it home. Got halfway up the driveway and it started to bog down. When I throttled out of the bog, it spun out from under me and tossed me off the side of the mountain. The bike was fine, but now I'm down a shoulder. I don't understand why they made a dual sport bike that's factory geared more for racing than trail riding.

Have tusk crash bars on front, and happy trails SU luggage carriers. Also have taller windshield. Had a 2003-2004 klr loved it. Does doohickey need to be changed out on 2016 model. SJ thanks

I agree with your tire specifications. Question: What's the most technical kind of riding I do? Answer: That's the tire I need to purchase. For me, dirt roads, gravel roads, Forest Service roads, some well-worn trails are the most technical riding I do. I'm not taking it to rock pits and jumping things, just riding. I'm looking at Mitas E07 rear and TKC 80 front. Hoping to get two solid years of riding off of these, at least. Thoughts?

I run that exact set up on my Husqvarna TR650 Terra and the Mitas E-07 Dakar rear and TKC80 front are totally awesome. The Dunlop D606's are better for flinging the mud, but other than that, the Mitas and Continental match up works great. I'm putting that set up on my 2022 KLR adventure next week. Hopefully you enjoyed them too!!

Tyres for the worst roads/tracks you will encounter (because I need all the help I can get). I've used a few sets of D606s - keep the air up on the blacktop (30 -35psi) and 6000km from the rear is easy. Yes, they are noisy and the knobs do flex. A mate of mine takes his KLR with D606s to the little mountains & twisties near hear and messes with the sports bikes - he can lean it over the edge of the knobs, so zero "chicken strip" - not for me!!

The more off Road the tire the worst its performance on Road, and it's not only to do corners, it affects the distance of braking (dunno if this is the technical name) and I personally found myself more often having to do a emergency stop than doing a track. That's why I use a 70/30. Oh and it vibrates more and have a lower max speed/load compared on road tires. So it's a little more uncomfortable to ride long distances

Mine has the cruising pegs for the highway etc. Is it cool if I take the crash bar off in city? Makes the front of the bike weight a ton and I'm not a weak guy by any means. I loved this content! The Gen3 actually feels a bit lighter up top, not sure that there's anyway to fox that on the older ones though. As far as lowering I'd try a lower seat before I bought lowering links just so I didn't lose ground clearance. But they are always an option. I'm excited because if all goes well I'll be riding a 2018 KLR with only 5k on the dash home tomorrow, just in time for 4th of July weekend! The one I'm hoping to buy already has a Tusk brand crash bar, bark busters and aftermarket large windshield. It's also had a lowering kit put on. Only thing is the previous owner put a BMW style sticker on with 'KLR' in Kawasaki green on the yellow gas tank. I do have two noob questions-do I need to do the doohickey on a 2018 and I noticed this one wouldn't start without it being choked-is this normal for a KLR?
@SwankyCatProductions
@SwankyCatProductions 3 жыл бұрын
Nice! Mine had 24k on it when it got totalled in an accident. No Doo-hickey issues and as far as I knew it had never been changed, just adjusted like the manual calls for (just need to loosen the bolt that holds the adjuster from the outside so the spring can do it's thing). All the carburated machines I've owned have needed the choke when cold, just gives you a little extra fuel.

@@SwankyCatProductions Dude, I got the 2018 KLR today! Have been riding all day. To my pleasant surprise the previous owner installed KOSO heated grips. One thing I made sure to check was how it did on the highway (it also has knobby tires that you said to get). It seems perfectly fine cruising along at 65-70 mph. Can't wait to take some trails/gravel roads. Impressed with it's comfortable ride position. Probably better be on the safe side and change the oil as it's at 5300 miles. I have noticed it's definitely cold natured-even after 5 minutes sitting it's a little touchy starting up without any choke. Eventually I'll clean the carb and install an inline fuel filter. Be safe, Happy Fourth!

Well, honestly out of the last 15 bikes I have owned ( well, one of those 15 I still own) this one is turning out to be my favorite "Fun bike!" of them all. My old XL1200C Harley that ran a 4 second 0-60 time was fast & loud and "cool", so that was fun. My still owned Vstar Silverado will always have my heart, I absolutely *love* that bike............for a *cruiser* And my old V'Strom 650 with all the farkles and a Seat Concepts seat was likely the best sport touring bike I ever owned, but I bought the Vstrom to do what this G310GS *IS* doing. The Vstrom, sweet as it was on the road, was a fat PIG off road and not enough ground clearance! I grew up on a farm and from 9 to 18 always had some form of either dirt bike or dual sport to ride. Yes, that part of my childhood was blessed! I say allllllll that to kinda let you know where I am coming from when I say that, *for ME,* I think the G310GS is a perfect fit! Ir will get many, many upgrades. Rally Raid will probly get at least $2500 over the next year or so. lol ( front suspension, those kick ass spoke wheels that can run *tubeless* tires!, and other doo-dads) I have SW Motech crash bars ordered 4 weeks ago, but they are STILL on frigg'n backorder! I am likely going to build my own skid plate as I am a decent welder and can fabricate steel plates easily. Bone stock I would rate the G310GS a solid 8 out of 10. I love the Verseys X300 too. Funny thing is, the X300 was insanely close to being the bike I bought. lol But I simply liked the looks, AWESOME seat, and overall smoother ride, plus the better low end grunt of the G310's engine better than the X300. And thanks for the subscription. :-)

I suppose, but the fairings and more importantly the radiator don't hold up well when dropped.

I disagree. Being on road with crappy road tires sucks balls. And it's dangerous as fuck when you're leaning the thing
@SwankyCatProductions
@SwankyCatProductions 6 жыл бұрын
With a soft knobby I can see having issues but with my Shinko adventure trails I can lean and hammer it pretty hard and have never lost traction. That's partially because the tires do have some street ability but also due to the fact I'm not pushing all the much HP either haha.

Nah give me the street tires. Hate my nobbies. I drive 99% on road and the stock tires give me no confidence in the corners or hard breaking. And before anyone says "Why did you buy a KLR if it never goes offroad?" I'm 6'6 and the KLR fits me perfectly. Can't say that about most bikes. I took my KLR hard offroading once and it was just not fun.
@SwankyCatProductions

I've never ridden stock tires but both my Shinko big blocks and K270s give me no pause on pavement in corners or when stopping quick. From what I've heard the stock tires are just not good at either on or off road. As for hard off roading the KLR does take some getting use to. It might be classified as an enduro but I personally think of it as an adventure bike and with my expectations adjusting that way it becomes a lot more fun off road.

I have a KLR camo version, ok bike. very primitive. if you want something more sleek looking, more power ect check out the new Kawasaki Z650 and Z900. They look like H2's but more then half the price.

You should be able to find an older KLR for petty cheap. They aren't as fancy looking but have all the same parts up until they stiffened up the suspension in 2014.5. Either way as long as your able to ride that's what's important!

I know this is two years old but what did you get? I bought a 250 Super Sherpa new in 2009. It’s been great. But just bought a 2016 KLR in grey digital camo in January 21. What little the weather has afforded the size suspension and 400cc increase is more than satisfactory for me. Feel spoiled. Especially with the after market windshield. Life changing.

@@whereswaldo5740 I ended up getting a 98 Honda Shadow 750. I've had my eyes on the new Tenere since it was announced. If I can get a good price for my Honda, I'll likely put it towards that, though the KLR is still a very close second for my consideration.
