Great video! As someone who lives at SMY and worked at the Asda in Swanley until recently and now for the railways I love some railway knowledge like this!

I was told that the station is again on the move, coming down closer to the town centre. Not sure how they'd incorporate the Sevenoaks branch, but apparently Swanley has a lot of development planned for the next five years.

I have always wondered why there was never a station at Swanley Village. The line passes very close by it and many much smaller communities had stations at one time.

had the same thing happen to me thrice: my local line had a few local stations closed that you’d never realize were there unless you looked, two survived partly intact and a third only in memory of a few…all only discovered because of reading about other stations nearby!

I live in Horton Kirby and used to catch the train from Farningham Road through Swanley to Victoria and back every day. I knew about Swanley Junction station, and Station Road with its choice of take-aways. But I've never gone looking for the remains of the station. Very interesting, thank you. Someone else mentioned the coal obelisk just outside Swanley station - that would be interesting to know a bit more about. Also, just past Farningham Road Station was a halt on the down line only, for the Farningham home for boys.

No sooner do you complete the quest of Swanley Junction station than you throw up another - the vanished Rochester Bridge station (which I didn't know about till now) is on MY doorstep in Strood! And there's another really nice railway-themed micropub here - the 1050 from Victoria!
@dodgydruid4 жыл бұрын
As a young young lad my father used to take me and my brother down to the top of Cuxton down and we would watch them working on the old railway bridge making it into the road bridge of today. In these later years, they are kicking themselves about losing the second railbridge as with it still in use today, the plan was a second less harsh chord coming up to it from the Strood-Cuxton line so now they are thinking of running a line around the Higham hill and across the Medway there or coming in a straight line from Higham tunnel portal across the medway to pick up to Rochester, some have even suggested using the old naval line for the high speed bypassing.

You perhaps omitted to say that Swanley was rebuilt in 1959 to accommodate 2 extra tracks. Another local station you may wish to visit is Lullingstone, just south of Eynsford Tunnel. Now that is hard to find!

@@HeyItsAJOmega I'm not certain that Lullingstone was ever actually opened. I believe it was built as a 'speculation' station, much like most of Metroland, for a development that was put paid to by WW2, again much like the Metropolitan extension north of Edgware(?). All down to the Green Belt act. I have watched a cab ride of the Sevenoaks line and the remains are easily seen from there but have never found them at ground level, not that I've looked that close in the first place..... Only found your Videos today, good work, don't stop. Thanks.

People say that Swanley is in Kent whilst others say that it’s in Greater London. Is Swanley technically in Kent. And also is close to the M25 London Orbital Motorway, A20 and M20. Anyways interesting video AJ. Andrew G.
@HeyItsAJOmega4 жыл бұрын
It is technically in Kent! Just about - it's literally right next to the boundary for Greater London, but it's on the Kent side xD
@Andrewjg_894 жыл бұрын
AJCantFail I totally agree. I always thought that Swanley is in Kent which it is. It’s only few miles from the London boundary and isn’t that far from Dartford, Bromley, Croydon, Caterham and other places on the London boundary with Kent and Surrey.
@markselby76774 жыл бұрын
Swanley is in Kent, however it's also within the M25 which may give rise to some confusion. Ticket wise it's a bit of an anomaly along with Dartford in that both outside zone 6 of the travel card area yet (London) pensioners freedom passes are valid to both for some strange reason.

@@markselby7677 I think that TFL must have decided that the surrounding areas are largely surrounded by pensioners?
@CJT804 жыл бұрын
@@markselby7677 the TfL Zones have been moved around a lot over the years. Darford (being an "outer London" commuter belt), wanted access to cheaper fares, and I beleive a number of people campaigned over the years to be part of the TC Zones... eventually their wish was granted.

I've spent some time searching for the lost railways around my neck of the woods - northeast Suffolk - and road names are a big clue where stations and the now not-so-permanent-way used to be. There's Station Road of course, but then there's also "Beeching Av.", "Beeching Dr.", "Beeching the moron", etc, etc Example - here's north Lowestoft, the old railway route is centre left from the bottom, Station Road is centre right, and Beeching Drive is just above that :) www.google.com/maps/place/Lowestoft/@52.4900631,1.7511491,337m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x47da032d0bb1a84d:0xa65c41c1d8577798!8m2!3d52.481138!4d1.753449

Love the colour-grading on this. What camera/colour profile/LUT are you using here?
@HeyItsAJOmega4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It's my regular G7X Mk2 camera, plus some colour grading edits in DaVinci Resolve which I was trying out for this video. I mostly use Adobe Premiere Pro though. Just tweak some of the colour grading (shadows, midtones, highlights etc) to give it more of an old 80s Super 8 footage look. :)
