This was so fantastic to watch! I'm currently struggling to paint a white dog with curly fur, and although these are feathers, I managed to pick up some wonderful tips on how to render shadows, apply tonal values to create form, then add beautiful and subtle highlights to tie it all together! I just found your videos and began watching them. You are an extraordinary painter! The way you paint wildlife reminds me a little of Robert Bateman’s paintings. I am a landscape painter and I have recently switched from using oil based paint to acrylics. I have been struggling a bit with the switch to acrylics, however your videos have helped me to understand the benefit of using multiple layers to achieve that much desired look I have been seeking. Thank you so much!! I really appreciate that as I've been a huge admirer of Robert Bateman's paintings since I was young and am still constantly inspired and amazed by his work. I'm glad that my videos have been helpful for you as you've switched from oils to acrylics. Yes definitely all about the many layers. It can take more time to layer certain elements. But you can get some great effects with the layering like with rocks or water, that in the end can add very nicely to the realism of the painting.

I met Robert Bateman while I was sketching. He happened to stop to talk to me, and he liked my work. I told him that OWEN GROMME taught me much about doing wildlife. I did not know who Robert Bateman was, or that I happened to be sketching in the Very park he bought and donated to TORONTO. Wild life where in live in Milwaukee Wisconsin, the Galleries do not accept REALISM in Nature as REAL art. They did not accept Owen Gromme's either. and he ended up showing his Art in the Milwaukee Museum Same place where I met him when I was around 10, and be skipping school. Light layers of slightly different colors of paint helps, but to keep your water and brushes clean, so your colors do not start to look muddy, or loose the color you wanted.

Trust me you are in total control of the Sun's rays and then the shadows follow suit. Wondering how youve brought alive these swans with such skill over your medium. Kudos 👏🏽👏🏽👍🏾👍🏾

Thank you!! Appreciate that!! I do find sunlit scenes quite challenging so having good reference photos to work from is key, plus just a lot of practice and experimentation. It's not always a straight forward process, so just constantly adjusting and fixing things until it gets to a point where I'm happy with it. It takes lots of time, but the results are definitely worth it!

Beautiful ! Painting a white object in sunlight and shadow has to be one of the most difficult effects to master, but you mastered it. Thank you so much for posting this video. It was both educational and entertaining! Can't wait for the next one!!

Thank you!! I'm glad I could share this! It's definitely one of the toughest things to paint, and even at times I still find it a struggle to get it just right. Lots of minor adjustments to ever so slightly lighten or darken all these different elements on the bird. In the future when I'm a bit more practiced at it, I'm hoping to share the same idea but for white fur!

Thanks Joseph for your reply. As tough as that is, I have to imagine that painting a late afternoon scene would be even more challenging. I have seen very few artists attempt a late afternoon scene, when the sunlight turns that distinct orange color, and casts everything in that light. I would love to learn how to paint that particular sunlight situation. I can't imagine anything tougher than that!@@JosephKoensgen

Yes, absolutely! I'm going to be attempting something just like that very soon where the sunlight is a deep orange right before the sun sets that's going to be lighting up the bird and many many branches. It's something I've never done before so I'm not exactly sure how I'm going to do that yet, (lots of experimenting) but hoping it works out. If I have some success with that one I'll definitely want to do that again and perhaps that's something I can share on my channel!

This is so beautiful to watch - your brush strokes are so confident. Do you ever find that you finish an area and then later on decide you've got to entirely repaint it with a slightly different hue or tonal value? I am working on a painting where I have repainted the main bird three times to get the shadows just right.

Thank you!! Yes, it happens to me fairly often that as I finish different sections of the painting, previous ones suddenly don't fit with the rest of the painting. I'll sometimes try a glaze or a wash to see if I can change the colour by tinting it with some transparent paint over top. But often I have to rework the area, experimenting with my colours to see if can get them match.

Thank you!! Yes I put my easel together myself. The large backing is from an old drawing desk I had when I was a kid. It took up tons of space so I took that off the base and then just put some simple legs on it so I could lean it against the wall. Then it has a very small footprint in my studio space, and it also very sturdy for working on large paintings.

I wasn't able to film this one as the background was very involved and took about 2 weeks to paint. But I really liked the way this one turned so I plan to do more scenes like this one!

My problem is the background. I did like how you did the Cardinal. I have been trying to create a pair, or that there is more than one. I am working on a house wren, a non conventional birdhouse, with a hole where ?? a young one showing, not sure to leave as is , as being now an empty nest. I could be wrong, but the house wren, very seldom seen the male. So I may add one last young in the nest , barely visible . I do not see many good wildlife artists. Galleries where I live does not see Realism in Wild life as Real art. I am in my last chapter of life. Years ago I painted, but someone broke into may apt. and took all of my years of notes, paintings, and art supplies. I could not afford art supplies, in order to sell some paintings, that helped pay for my college education. NO real basic skills, ended up in a run of mill job, never money to afford to raise a child and keep a roof over our heads. Now, I managed to accumulate enough supplies to start one last try. But I am still can not afford to have prints made, or enter shows. I did try recently the Maryland show, but did not have money to pay added insurance. WONDER if I will get them back in the next few days. FAMOUSE OWEN GRAMME , friends later with Robert Bateman , was the one who taught me when I was younger. I would skip school, and he worked in the Museum where I would go to sketch wild life. I try to get at least 5-7 paintings a month. The park I normally go to, to gain my idea for a background, this spring -summer, they cut trees down, and planted big area of Wild plants, but TREATED THEM TO KILL THE Ash Emerald Bore. ONLY PROBLEM , I did not see, nor hear any birds. Not even on the shore area of Lake Michigan. All the area where the trillium , fire pink, the lady's slippers, even the water stream area where the Marsh Marigolds grew, were not there where they cleared the water area. I could go to the lake park , but it is not safe to go alone . I had met Robert Bateman in my early 20's. Think he was still teach Art . At the time while I was sketching and he happened to stop and talk to me. He liked my sketches.. I had NO idea who he was. or that I was in the very park he bought , and donated to TORONTO . So, in memory for the two that made me feel like I was important, I paint to show my appreciation...

In my work, I do like to have backgrounds that give a strong sense of space and atmosphere that really show the animals habitat and environment - creating lots of depth with interesting colours, shapes, light and shadows. I've been admiring Robert Bateman's work since I was young and I've taken a huge amount of inspiration from his paintings. That's great you had a chance to meet and learn from him back then. I'm sorry to hear about all your supplies and sketches being stolen. I hope that you are able to start again and that in some way, my videos can be helpful in your journey. And though I'm not able to make lots of videos because my time is limited, I hope to take great care in making videos where I can share as much information as I can.
