Swap a ZD30 for TD42 (Pt. 1)

I s'pose I did the conversion because the GU was an afterthought. The TD42 was purchased originally to replace a blown engine in a GQ. So when the injector pump on the ZD30 died, I decided to spend the same money on an 11mm pump upgrade for the TD42 and take it from there. Mind you, I am sure there are guys out there that have fitted a 6.5ltr Chevy diesel and wondered why I have wasted my time with such a small engine. Thanks for watching, hope you enjoy the journey.

for all the trouble. of fitting a 110 kw motor.. ive opted for the bmw 3.0. tdi.. 2010 ish up.. salvage low k bm, 3k, kit, 5k.. just delete the butterflies in the inlet,,they drop off..fit better turbo.. stand alone wireing..@@HarrysBigShed

Hi Harry; I wonder why not keeping the ZD30's gearbox? I was searching online and supposedly the same gearbox is used across ZD, TD and TB's Is there a big difference?

I did keep the gearbox that was behind the ZD30, as the GQ box hit the tunnel.

Hi Harry, I have a stock patrol Y61 1997 automatic petrol engine....it's no fun, I'm no mechanic as well, but I'd really love to have a Cummings manual swap. How much would you charge for something like that....I'm from Papua New Guinea btw, just above Australia...

Hi M8, To put it in accounting terms....shit loads. Even to do a TD 42 conversion is going to cost a bomb, by the time you source an engine and do all of the work, it would be cheaper for you to sell your petrol guzzler and buy a diesel truck. Also keep in mind I am in Melbourne so you would have to get the car all the way to the bottom of the mainland from where you are and it becomes terribly expensive. Best of luck with it all though.

Why is the cross member different and does it bother lt into the same holes

G’day Peter, You need to change the cross member over as the one that came with the 3ltr puts the box where it needs to be with that engine and the 4.2 does the same with that unit. Basically I have swapped out a 3ltr cross member for a 4.2ltr cross member. Thanks for watching my videos, I hope you are finding them useful.

I got a gu patrol 2003 zd30 engine is blown I also got a td42 patrol drivetrain how much roughly would it cost for you to convert for me ?

You have to appreciate where I started with this, and that was with a fresh engine (under 20,000 k's). Depending on how many yours has done it might be a good idea to do the head gasket along with putting on all sorts of things like new water pump, coolant and heater hoses. On top of this, if you want to run a descent turbo setup you will have to replace the standard injection pump for an 11mm unit with a boost compensator, these are running at around the $4000 these days just for that one bit of kit, but it is needed or any other power mods will be money wasted. So you can see this isn't a cheap venture. Knowing how many hours are involved in the job (many more than the videos are made up of) you won't see any change from $10K but then your truck will run as reliably as mine. Wiring is fairly easy to wire up glow plug wire is the same starter motor wire is the same only problem I had was water temp wire has a different voltage so if you take the water temp sensor out of the zd and put it in the td it all works out easy
