Love that you're mixing it up and showing folks the actual "application" of how we can use LFP in different scenarios vs. at home on the bench. Great work!

Hi Jason, That is a nice upgrade from the lead acid batteries. Your friend did a great job on the battery box too. Everything and even the propane covers look like a nice clean install. Great job guys. Thanks and take care, Steve.

This looks like a great idea. We have a little 16' camper, and having a drop-in replacement for its single 12V battery should be straightforward and easy. I think I'll make that an early Spring project, when my hands won't freeze doing the swap in case I also have to replace cables.

That battery box is so cool. My question is: Why didn't you go with a 400ah battery. It would have fit. I thick the Victron 50/100 controller would have been a better choice. You'll never regret buying the good stuff!

thanks Rod for sharing your trailer experience with us. this is a good replacement video idea, i may suggest that self heating batteries would also benefit the outdoors conditions. also for that much space, a 200ah battery may be an option as well instead of using 2x100ah
@Jasonoid

Self heating batteries would be a great upgrade for people wanting to use their trailer in the colder months, great recommendation! In Rod's case, he only uses his trailer during the 3 warmer seasons so he didn't need the extra cost. The 200ah batteries are a little more compact so they would have fit nicely in this case as well. The 100ah batteries were on a really good sale so we couldn't pass them up! ($227 each)

I didn’t have a battery monitor, shunt etc when I switched to a single 100 Ah LiFePO battery from a lead acid battery, so I opted to get a battery with the Bluetooth monitoring and with a self heating function, low temp and high temp cutoff. It was only a few dollars more but I saved much more by not purchasing all the hardware and the time to install the hardware.

The float being 13.2 volts will bring the lithium batteries to a 70% capacity. Correct? I am currently using AGM and lithium in my motorhome. I have a switch to power the "house" with either one. I Charge the AGM with the Progressive Dynamics power center. The charger portion is on its own circuit breaker. I turn it off when powering the house with lithium. I charge the lithium battery with an external lithium 14.4 volt 5-amp charger. Having the PD charger on a separate breaker I thought was worth noting.
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid 5 ай бұрын
The converter will first bulk charge the batteries until full, which is usually a higher voltage around 14.2v -14.6v (it's different per brand). The float is the long time maintenance setting which won't really affect the LFP batteries. For most LFP batteries, once the charging is completed the resting voltage will drop down to be around 13.3v - 13.4v so the floating voltage is pretty close to that.

Your onboard converter must be compatible with lithium batteries. I have been told by several RV technicians that most older trailer converters are not lithium compatible with the converter's charge profile. The good news is the newer trailer converters have a switch that can manually be flicked inside the converter to change to lithium. Older converters will charge the lithium batteries to about 80%; but at a cost of shortened battery life. Your friend is lucky he has a converter that is fairly close to the charge profile of lithium battery"s.
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid 5 ай бұрын
I agree, if anyone is going to swap over to LFP they need to confirm the onboard battery charger is compatible. The one installed on this trailer bulk charges at 14.4v which is perfect for LFP batteries. I have seen many options online so it shouldn't be too hard to find a replacement converter if the voltages aren't right.
@kevinholland4156

There are many choices for replacement converters Progressive Dynamics makes an affordable one, but the real cost is having an electrician install it and most electricians won't do a trailer so you are stuck with the Rv dealerships.@@Jasonoid

What up Doe Dr J' Nice new segment on the channel keep them coming 👍🏼 What would the procedure be if it was a older RV with an outdated charge controller?
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid 5 ай бұрын
Lead acid battery charging profiles are super close to LFP batteries. I'd first see how the old unit works with the new batteries before replacing it. In most cases people shouldn't have an issue charging LFP batteries with a lead acid charge controller. Remember each LFP battery has a built in BMS that keeps it from being damaged.

Did your friend have any issues charging the batteries from the tow vehicle? Everything i have read says you need a dc/dc converter between the batteries and trailer plug. If a converter is not used the lithium batteries will pull more current than the wiring can handle, constantly popping the fuse on the tow vehicle.
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid 4 ай бұрын
His setup does not utilize any towing vehicle charging. He only has the the built in AC charger (when connected to shore power or if the genny is running) and the solar charge controller.

Thanks for this video. You may not have mentioned that the original two 6 volt batteries required series connection. The two 12V should wired be in parallel. I'm assuming that this change was made, correct?

Now the low temperature charging cutoff makes me wonder; Do ALL cheap batteries with this feature SHUTOFF completely; or do they allow discharge and shutoff charging? In many cases we can have discharging at below freezing. But do batteries allow this option?
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid 5 ай бұрын
It's okay to discharge at low temps, just not charging. That's why there's only low temp charging protection. Super cheap batteries don't have LTCP.

Rod uses his batteries for 3 seasons, he didn't need to pay for the extra feature since he doesn't use the trailer in the winter. You can definitely add that feature if you use your batteries in the winter.

is there no need for a t class fuse?
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid 5 ай бұрын
You could definitely install a T class fuse as well. These batteries have built in short circuit protection via the BMS board which is an added safety as well. We kept most of the system how it was, replacing the damaged parts only. There are a couple fuses under the chassis for the main power leads.

Hey, One question. Does that insulation on the box lid have a conductive Mylar coating? and if so would putting the white side toward the battery be better?
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid 5 ай бұрын
Great question! We ended up putting terminal covers over the battery terminals so they are protected against unwanted contact. I think you could put the insulation either way if you used the included battery covers.
