Swapping 3 and 4 terminal regulators starter generator garden tractor 12v. They are interchangeable

What voltage regulator to use. You can use either voltage regulator on your garden tractor with an 12 v Delco Remy starter generator. They are interchangeable. How i check to see if voltage regulator is bad , i momentarily ground the field and commands full charge from starter generator. Starter generator will polarize it`s self when you turn key to start. This is based on the Sears suburban , SS14 and ss15 , but will be the same for many garden tractors. I show how I wire up a garden tractor charging system with a starter generator. For my life I don't know why all these terminals -- voltage regulator, switch, and starter generator could not have been marked clearly with letters that correspond with each other. That would have made it much easier for the average guy. Thanks, though for the lesson!

Your drawing of the 4 wire setup, it did not show the regulator being grounded, but on the 3 wire setup the regulator was grounded. Is the 4 wire regulator supposed to be grounded?

Very good explanation and drawings. I’m running a solenoid on my setup and I’m not sure how to wire it into this system. I have the 4 pole regulator. Can you tell me how the solenoid gets wired into the #4 drawing you made? Thanks

Instead of hot wire from battery going to key it goes to a big lug on solenoid , also on that solenoid terminal add a wire to key switch to power the switch . Other big terminal on solenoid goes to starter. If 3 wire mower solenoid then need a wire from S terminal on key switch to the small wire on the solenoid. And solenoid needs bolted down to ground If the solenoid is for a mower and has two small terminals then one needs grounded , Does not hold true for automotive solenoids

@@neelybourqueorr Probably the A terminal of ign switch to amp meter then to B terminal of regulator . With Magneto system and key switch . If external coil , then may be R terminal i believe it is . Like a K series Kohler may have
