You kids today, if you understood the Bosch system then you'd recognise that the ECU is getting the wrong temp on start and is giving it too much fuel. If it was a golf, it would be the blue temp sensor. What's the Kia equivalent? That's your problem. Thank me in the next video, an actual mechanic who doesn't just plug in a computer.

Replace the vvtc solenoid, its an oil driven solenoid that has been starved of oil. I think the test you did confirmed it was the issue but its just too far gone past just cleaning it and just needs a new one putting in, best of luck im a self employed mobile mechanic and its good to see someone posting the real struggles rather than skipping past it to look the best

That high pitched noise you’re hearing is a failing PCV.. when they fail they tend to make that noise and it’s pretty common for your car to blow out air when removing the oil cap. A working PCV should suck the oil cap back in as you try to remove it

Second this, a good cleaning with electrical contact cleaner will do it. Id also look at cleaning the throttle body and the idle air control sensor if it has one. As you said its cold start only could also be either of the oxygen sensors as most work on a closed loop when hot.

STICKY INTAKE VALVES due to Carbon build up from direct injection. I've tried every which way (including commenting over and over) to get your attention. Literally main symptom is a cold start misfire. PLEASE LOOK INTO IT!!!! Early VW TFSi direct injections were horrendous for it as I'm literally doing it on my Octavia VRS now.

Valves might be coked up. Also high pressure pumps can very slowly go faulty which causes misfires either permanently or just on a cold start. Best way to verify would be to get detailed diagnostic info on the pump which is sometimes only available on manufacturer spec tools/software. Both of these issues are quite common on GDI engines, especially smaller ones such your 1.4 and 1.6 that many manufacturers use too. Also verify that no timing tensioners and chain guides are broken. Possibly the cam actuators are bad too. Might sound silly but I've been through all of this before and know that all of these can cause this issue. Do voltage tests across some sensors such as the VVT solenoids and so on May even be something as small as the MAF sensor. Check the values and voltage test it. Block that intake leak up too My guess is that its high pressure pump or timing related (including the vvt solenoids in this as a potential issue, as i suggested, give them a voltage test and make sure they're working correctly and not just cleaned up) Reading another comment about the PCV reminded me about that too. Again common issue on newer gdi engines. Investigate valve cover gasket too 👍

Replace the pipe from the intake, that could be why it is squeeking, big enough rip or gap in the pipe to do a rough idle and make noise. Unplug the maf sensor and see if there is a difference, I think it is faulty maf sensor. You've done spark, fuel but not air.

But why would the wiring cause an issue on cold start only? Of it was electrical, it would be all the time, which it isn’t. I was thinking maybe the oil is the wrong type and the engine hasn’t been properly maintained. Once the oil has warmed, it runs fine?
@nortonhickie9188
@nortonhickie9188 2 күн бұрын
@@chrispybee When he first started it after refitting the injectors, it ran fine, then when he left it again for a while, it misfired. A loose fitting injector plug, corroded pins/wiring, or a partial break somewhere in the wiring could explain that as they'd only just been refitted and the wiring was disturbed, so it worked fine temporarily. A workshop manual will contain specs for voltages and ohms readings for each component and the wiring in between.

Check the pcv system. It’s sounds like it’s failed. Quick test is to take the intake pipe off the air box, start the car and cover the intake pipe with your hand, if the valve is good the engine should choke and stall, if it’s failed the engine will still run by sucking air in through the pcv valve. This is a known test for psa vehicles according to a tsb on ddtsb platform, and may operate the same way on your Kia.

Get a cheap can of freezer spray, spray the VVTC solenoid when the engine is warmed up and the engine is not misfiring. If it starts to misfire again when you apply the freezer spray then it would indicate an internal issue with the electronic solenoid when cold. This is an old trick we used for identifying faulty ICs on PCBs that only showed symptoms when circuits were cold.

misfires = O2 sensors gone bad if coils and plugs are fine. diagnose it, check voltages, o2 sensors usually don't throw an error unless they are toast. they just output erroneous info to the ECU and engine runs rich (if it smells like gas on cold start and then it's fine). O2 sensors pretty much are with 4 fires, with pre heating, so if the pre-heat circuit is gone, until the car gets up to temp, the o2 sensor will throw sh*t to the ECU.

I suspect Jesse has learnt a valuable lesson in business. Not everyone that blows smoke up your arse is your friend. There must be 40+ suggestions in the comments of different possibilities for sorting the issue plus everything that Jesse has already tried. True, it has made excellent content for an excellent KZbinr but all of the time already spent has been wasted and still the issue isn't sorted. If a dealer has a problem car he won't waste time on it he will simply move it on because he understands fully that time is money and he is better off making it someone else's problem. Sure, lots of people disagree with me and seem to think Calvin is above pulling a stunt like this but let's remember, he is there to make money and knows when to get rid of a lemon.Jesse will get to the root cause of the firing issue, I have no doubt, but with the time he has already spent on it he has wiped out any profit he might have made. I love Jesses story and wish him every success, he deserves it.

1. Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) Fault: If the CTS is faulty, it might send incorrect temperature readings to the ECU, leading to improper fuel mixture on cold starts. This can cause misfires until the engine warms up. 2. Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) Issues: The MAF sensor regulates the air-to-fuel ratio. A dirty or faulty MAF sensor can lead to a misfire, particularly on cold starts, as the sensor may not properly adjust to the cooler air density. 3. Vacuum Leak: A small vacuum leak might not cause noticeable issues when the engine is warm, but on a cold start, when the air/fuel mixture needs to be richer, a leak can lead to misfires. Check for any loose or cracked vacuum hoses. 4. Throttle Body/Idle Air Control Valve (IACV): If the throttle body or idle air control valve is dirty or malfunctioning, it can lead to incorrect airflow and cause a misfire on cold starts. 5. Fuel Pressure Regulator: A faulty fuel pressure regulator can lead to incorrect fuel pressure during a cold start, which could cause a lean or rich condition, leading to a misfire. 6. PCV Valve: A clogged or malfunctioning PCV valve could cause an imbalance in the air/fuel mixture, particularly when the engine is cold, leading to misfires. 7. Intake Manifold Gasket Leak: A leak in the intake manifold gasket can cause unmetered air to enter the engine, resulting in a misfire on cold starts. This is typically more pronounced when the engine is cold, as the gasket seals better when warm. 8. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve: If the EGR valve is stuck open or malfunctioning, it could cause a misfire on cold starts by allowing exhaust gases into the combustion chamber when they are not needed. 9. ECU (Engine Control Unit) Issues: As you suspected, it could be an ECU problem, especially if the ECU is not correctly adjusting the air-fuel mixture during cold starts. Checking for any error codes or performing an ECU reflash or update might help.

Transmission control module, Transmission Control Module (TCM) Fault The TCM works closely with the ECU to manage power delivery based on gear shifts and engine load. A fault in the TCM can send incorrect signals to the ECU, potentially causing misfires, poor engine performance, or rough idling, particularly when changing gears.

Hey Jesse - I know what the issue is as i have a modified car that does this is all the time. (24/7 Its not actually an issue it just sounds like one) It'll be the timing chain has stretched because of the previous owner running too much power through the engine. My timing chain has to be replaced every 20,000 Miles ottherwise it misfires REALLY bad on a cold start and could potentially damage the engine over time Soon as i change the timing chain the misfire on cold start goes away instantly and only comes back around the 20-25k mile mark (Will be alot more on your engine as its not pushing 2x original power) Goodluck

Check the throttle body it might be sticking. Also take the inlet back off and have a look at the valves, I’ve been seeing a lot of them lately having a build up of sludge on the valve stems from cheap fuel and it causes a misfire as the valve does not open/close correctly until it’s warm (ish) We used to have a special sand blaster to clean them

Had a cold start misfire on a r53 Mini Cooper S. Down the same route as you, spark plugs, injectors, coil pack, ht leads, compression test didn’t indicate any issues. Found the issue in the end, took the expansion tank cap off when engine was hot, and when car was cold it didn’t misfire anymore! Coolant was leaking into cylinder as the car cooled down, issue went away when the car was hot. Replaced head gasket and cylinder head with a reconditioned head. Reckon a cylinder leak down test would have confirmed the same, but worth checking the expansion tank trick as it confirmed my suspicions 😊

Great video buddy don’t lose heart. Change the VVT solenoid as cleaning it alone probably won’t solve it and as it’s better when unplugged it’s worth doing

Fix the air leak on the Air Intake pipe as thats after the sensor, replace the VVT Solenoid and do an engine flush at least once to clean valves etc... Love your content brother, keep it coming ;)

Check the live data for the maf/map sensor to make sure theg arent faulty. Dumping too much fuel could mean that leak on the intake is sucking in air. Also check the o2 sensor for the pre cat to see if it is rich or if the o2 sensor itself is faulty. Clean all the sensor connectors. Without knowing what live data youve looked at other than injector timings, its hard to know where to look.

One thing I’ve noticed is how gloopy the oil seems to be. A few things I would look at. 1. Change the VVTC solenoid with a new one 2. Oil flush and change Maybe oil is too thick for the engine can manage?

Jesse , sound very similar to an issue which was common on Renault vvt engines, the oil would drain out the vvt pulley over time ( changing the timing ) once the oil / oil pressure was normal it was fine !! Good luck and keep up the good work 👍🏼

you have to check your turbo, specifically the bypass / bypass rod because it has a variable adjustment that has to be adjusted during cold starts so that the engine can get more air, the code P2261 indicates this . Directly from the Kia manual

I’d pressurise the system with air through the intake pipe/turbo inlet and see if you can replicate that whistling noise. That sounds like an air leak still that the smoke might not show, as it’s low pressure. You also mentioned fuel trims, I’d be looking at O2 sensors. A friends Subaru was an absolute pig to drive on part throttle and idled like shit because of a faulty O2 sensor.

Hey Jesse! Another excellent video and congrats on the 100k subs! I had a few thoughts as I was watching as to things I'd be checking. You mentioned fuel trims - these can be very useful when diagnosing issues like that where you have no DTCs. The condensed explaination is short term fuel terms are the live adjustments being made to injection based on feedback from o2 sensors. Positive fuel trims indicate a lean issue i.e. the ecu is adding fuel to try pull the air fuel ratio up. On the flip side then, if its minus its pulling fuel out. +/-5% is a good rule of thumb. The long term trims will indicate an adaptation made based over time. Again here the +/-5% is a good indication. If it's showing high either way it's indicative that the problem has been there for an extended time. To go with this you mentioned checking plugs. A bit old school but I still read plugs for visual tales. Easier to do on a fresh set so could be valuable in looking at them again. To couple this with the fuel trims - given there is only 1 sensor you only see an average across the 4 cylinders. With regards to air leaks, I think thr smoke test was the right call. If you have an air leak post a MAF sensor that is unmetered air into the engine. I didn't see a MAF sensor in the video so assuming you just have a MAP sensor - also worth checking to see the readings are plausible. It looks like you are on the right track with the VVT solenoid. Those solenoids work on PWM or pulsed DC voltage. The ecu will be commanding it to hit X cam angle based on whatever is specified in the ecu mapping for given load condition. If you can pull up commanded cam angle, actual cam angle and solenoid duty cycle, you will know straight away. If cam angle is all over the place and duty cycle is jumping massively, it would indicate a mechanical issue with the solenoid. I had something similar with fuel pressure in a diesel Tiguan where the ecu was sending wild commands to the fuel pressure regulator trying to stabilise fuel pressure. Replaced the pressure reg and all good. That is also worth a look as well as those GDI engines run higher fuel pressure than your typical port injection engine. I think you are very close. Stick with it! Hope some of this info comes in use be it for this car or one of the future ones. Dan.

I had a similar issue with my Focus Titanium, and it was due to bad ignition coil. On the ignition coil, it will have numbers for the spark plug leads, so I think that could be the issue with yours. With mine, the spark plug leads were in the wrong number sequence on the ignition coil, and that's where my car was misfiring badly and stalling. Since I changed the plug leads into its right sequence and fresh spark plugs yesterday, my car starts straight away and no more misfiring. Give that a go and see what happens 🙏🏾 🤞🏾

jess, i one of your older viewers 57 ish think may be worth checking throttle body in older cars you used to have to operate choke cable yourself for cold starts , but now its all automatic in throttle body , perhaps whats causing misfire is whatever acts as a choke nowdays is malfunctioning, this video one of your best keep up with great content

That leaky air inlet pipe will 100% cause a running issue, your maf sensor will measure the flow, and the amount that the maf has measured doesn't end up in the cylinders 'as its leaked out' It will cause an over fueling issue surely.
