Senior journalist K Raka Sudhakar Rao explains the horrors committed by the Razakars against Hindus in the erstwhile Hyderabad State.
Mir Osman Ali, the seventh Nizam of the Hyderabad state, was deposed on 17 September 1948. Unleashing a tyrannical rule, led by the rampaging state-backed militia called the Razakars; the Nizam presided over the worst atrocities employed by any princely state, in a bid to remain independent. The Nizam, who ruled over almost 16 million people, 85 per cent of whom were Hindus, used every trick in the book to retain his independence as the British prepared to leave India.
In September 1948, Sardar Patel sanctioned Operation Polo and ensured that Indian troops freed millions of patriotic Hindus and Muslims from the whimsical tyranny of the Nizam.

Mr Sudhakar is telling the truth. I was raised in Hyderabad and lived there for 25 years. Nizam had the full support of the Muslim community but also a few Hindu traitors like the Velamas (KCR's caste), Reddys, who were zamindars and sucking the blood of Hindus through various taxes for 200 odd years. The Nizams lead a very lavish life. No beautiful Hindu women were spared. Women were abducted in daylight by Nizam's cohorts. The terrified Hindu parents gave their girl children unfashionable names like Pentamma, Pochamma, Kistamma, Kalamma etc. The seventh Nizam became the richest man of the world by squeezing money out of Hindu labourers, farmers etc. All those palaces were built with Hindu money. When people claim that Nizam built hospitals, railways and a university, remember that it was built with Hindus blood, tears and sweat. The Muslims were made to believe that they were the real rulers and enjoyed treating other communities like slaves. Their contributed nothing to the exchequer by way of taxes but enjoyed all the privileges. Why did the Hindus allow a migrant from Iran to establish a dynasty _ Asaf Jahi _ and rule them for 234 years. It astonishes me. They were naive, timid and behaved more or less like sheep.

My grandmother lived in Koti in 1940s. She and the rest of her family ran to a Satram (Temple lodging) where local Hindus went for refuge when the Razakars ran amok. They used to kidnap women off the roads never to be seen again. My grandfather had to jump off the train to save his life when they got into his train and started butchering people. The Razakars joined hands with the imported Arab militia who formed the core of Nizam's personal guard, in these atrocities.
