When bees are swarming like that, they're looking for a place to make a new hive. During this time, they're actually non-aggressive. Without a hive, they have nothing to actively defend. You could walk through them or pick them up without being stung. There are videos of this occurring on peoples vehicles or near their homes. Someone comes in without any protective gear and picks them up bare-handed, places them in a case, and moves them somewhere else.
