You know John, one of the things I love about you're channel is, we get to see heads I've never seen or heard about before. And no matter how they perform its awesome to see and watch. It's fun to look for thr strengths and weaknesses of each one of these and even tho you are giving them a score we at home score them as well or at least I do haha. I ne we give my final score to myself until I see the price per head at the end on your score sheet.. like this head I was thinking 7.. until I saw the score sheet and saw the price. Not that it's ridiculously pricey but you know if it was a 10 dollar head instead of 16 that's a big difference. So I was with you on the 6 lol. Great video as always. Thank you sir

Thanks Mikey. It's hard to give a head an Overall Grade. I do my best to compare how it performs to other heads in each of the categories in order to be consistent with those grades. However, the individual scores in each category are what matter the most.

I have shot a couple deer with ss swat hybrid and used it for practise. As you point out, it flies really well as a fixed head, but they do not leave much of a blood trail (one double lung, the other lung/heart shot, both pass through with my set up: Revolt at 30" draw, 70#, arrow 470 grs.) The extra weight modules do not fit either Easton Hexx brass inserts or the Victory VAP SS Elite inserts, not enough threads on the bh. Also as you point out, the weakest point is the blades, and try to exchange them with new ones in the field...good luck!! I am back with fixed broadheads!

So for the last 5 years I have used the Swat 3.75 inch cut head. It’s a rear deploy and fold over both. Now I only use the monsters out of my 425 FPS Scorpyd so i have plenty of energy. I have shot 5 Ohio brutes with it plus a few Michigan bucks and I will tell you 1 I normally don’t like mechanics in a broadhead. The theory just seems dumb but in this specific head the deer normally don’t even run off. It hurts them so badly they either lay down or stand their and look around and then lay down. It slaps the only head EVER that I shot a buck with that fell over from energy kill. The head hit him in the shoulder and nerve punched him lol. The deer fell over and died within seconds! Awesome deal. Ps the blood trails are out of this world. Last years buck was 9 feet wide when we measured it from both sides! My buddies freaked out!

Two weeks ago I shot a doe with the steel version. My arrow is 372 grains, 24.5% FOC, shooting 310 FPS out of a bowtech prodigy. I let the excitement get the best of me and shot her in the spine, the tip punched through the spine and blades did fully deploy into the spine. The head is still in perfect condition. Blades didn't bend, tip still looks brand new and it still spins true. Also, the deer didn't go 20...inches. Sadly I had to to a follow up shot because I did paralyze it. I think the feral being so large and the blades being smaller, they are sturdier than other longer blades. I will keep using them.

Great job on all this testing John. I very much enjoy all the testing been watching you for a long time now . You know today as I was working out and thinking about the upcoming season here in louisiana it hit me ! I hope yourself really but someone as in detail as you would try these heads out from crossbows for all the handicapped and youths or anyone that’s hunts with crossbows. I find it very very interesting to see the out come in the same medium from a mid powered crossbow on some of these top heads. Very well may help these guys out in seeing if the heads will perform well under more draw weight. If u ever get around to it or anyone does start this test I am very willing to send some different heads that I have. Currently I have a crossbow and hunt with my dad in thick swamp for deer here in louisiana we have not shot one yet with the crossbows and we are using afflictor 125 gr hope they hold up to 175lb draw weight if shot hits a small bone Anyway thanks love the videos and hope you could try this testing out someday thanks

@@LuskArcheryAdventures Yeah I hear u there. They are not cheap. If I ever upgrade and u still have not got one by that time I’ll donate a my old and maybe u Will have to only put a new string on it or something we will see lol. I have afflictor ext 125 gr for my crossbow never had a chance yet to shoot a deer with them yet so I hope I made a great choice and they hold up and perform well for me. I hunt public land so I need a good blood trail and fast kill more than anything before he goes by another hunter lol

@WM-jy9dz

...for right handers: too the left --> spine could be too stiff; to the right --> spine could be too weak (common with high FOC, negative impact on dynamic spine often overseen in the hunt for more FOC). For left hand shooters it is the opposite. It is also nearly impossible to get arrows that have a different spine (even if they have the same weight) to hit the same spot - you may get the windage right, but very likely not the elevation (the stiffer spine will hit higher - if they have the same weight). Eta: just to add general comments about FOC: there is a lot of hype about more and more FOC (...but Ashby said, ...and RF...etc.) and I get it that people jump on this. But it is a catch22 - more FOC means you need to cover the needs for a stiffer dynamic spine which means usually more GPI thus compromising the FOC so you even need to load the front with more weight thus needing more GPI .... and so on.) Beside this there are a tons of other downsides: a heavy arrow means less speed, and while the physics tell you that a heavier arrow has less drag loss (= KE loss) due to lower speed, this is only some kind of an advantage for the horizontal direction; gravity works for the total arrow in the vertical, and so do the same physics. That means that the front drops over a distance faster than the rear (not due to the heavier tip as free fall is independent from the mass, but due to the higher drag at the rear causing a higher pivoting moment due to the longer lever / distance to center of gravity) thus the arrow planes with more shaft profile in the wind causing again more drag / KE losses. Now add a BH sail to the front and good luck with hitting what you are aiming for. The "pinnacle" of a high FOC arrow, the UFOC with up to 30% is therefore nearly impossible to tune properly and the accuracy will suffer significantly as the system becomes less forgiving (not all of us are hooter shooters). An arrow usually needs a min. of 5% FOC to fly stable (some 3D shooters even shoot neutral arrows), and everything up to 15% is usually easy tunable, and IMHO more FOC is never required respectively can't be justified due to the negative tradeoffs. Eta: ...if you have only a moderate FOC, thus ruling out the FOC as the culprit, I would check the 3. axis - if the 3. axis is not adjusted correctly your shots (FP and BH) might be perfect at 20 meters, but not at a longer distance when you aim higher thus changing the position of the sight level.
@LuskArcheryAdventures

There is definitely either a tuning issue, spine issue, or a grip/release issue with that. Werner's comment below is a good one. I always check my paper tunes further by shooting bare shafts. If a bare shaft has the same point of impact and the same angle of impact as fletched arrows, then almost any broadhead will fly great--especially Iron Wills.

Thank you. I did test their all steel model a while back in both the open and closed position. They still fly great open, and they obviously make a better entrance hole while open. But after the first shot into the MDF, all the shots are in the open position, and it only took one to break the blades.

@LuskArcheryAdventures

It was a while ago. But I believe it was in the closed position for some of the testing and then open after that. During the durability tests, the first shot was closed, then open after that.

How do you balance being a pastor and hunting? I'm doing ministry and hunting, and I feel like I have no time.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I get that. I've been in the ministry for well over 3 decades now. During many of my years in ministry I was not able to hunt at all. But now I've learned to create more boundaries for myself. Burnout is real and it's crucial to have ways to recharge yourself on a regular basis. God created us with certain physiological limitations and properties. We need sleep, food, water...and we need to replenish our serotonin and adrenaline, which often gets depleted by giving, giving, giving all the time. If you want to do ministry for the long haul, it's essential to understand this and also to not feel guilty getting that kind of time away from people and doing things that fill your cup back up :)

I guess just by looking at the design it really wouldn't open until the back set of teeth grab hide and bone. By that time the blades are already into or past the first set of ribs.

Not for me. It doesn't open early enough to provide a full diameter hole meaning less blood loss and longer trailing. + the blades may break off if they hit bone.

...I expected more from a BH using titanium...if just one of those little blades separate in the game it will take me ages to ensure that it won't hurt the dogs when preparing dog food....
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Well, the titanium did fine. The blades and the blade retention are all steel. That being said, titanium is stronger than some steels, but not most...it's value its weight to strength ratio. It's stronger than most aluminums, much lighter than steel, but weaker than most steels. That being said, again, the titanium ferrule on these did great--it was the steel blades and steel blade pins holding them to the ferrule that broke.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures ...reliability is always defined by the weakest part in the system - as a manufacturer I would ask myself whether it is worth spending the money on more exotic titanium if the rest of the system can't keep up with it?

Why would someone want to shoot a mechanical with open blades? It‘s just combining the negatives of both worlds; the structural integrity will still be lacking and your trajectory will become worse. You don‘t lose the energy needed for the unfolding process, but that‘s about it... That hinge construction looks like you‘ll have to buy new folding blades after every shot. 🙄 Thank you for testing even the wonky ideas. 😄
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Well, you'll get a better entrance hole with the blades in the open position, and these still fly very well open...but yes, the blade connection to the ferrule is a weak point.
@ikeyeet8312
@ikeyeet8312 3 жыл бұрын
absolute trash those blades break like that, no go! Every titanium head ive had the ferules bent on hard impacts just like this one.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I did not see the ferrule bend at all on this one--even in concrete. The Sevr 1.5 is titanium and it is BY FAR the most durable mech on the market, especially the 125 gr model which has a thicker ferrule. In the SWAT it is the blade retention in the steel blades that is the weak point, not the titanium.
