I watched this yesterday and came back to get your verbiage on "the line between color" and it made me wonder how much the name of the color in the palette causes you to think that the color is either blue or green. What lovely dialogue and I pulled out all of my eyeshadows, they are waiting for me on the dining room table and I am going to swatch by color groups and find out what I discover with my human lines of color. Thank you Hannah for always inspiring me.

I would draw the line between blue and green in a different place. Maybe because I have blue eyes and cool-toned skin? I would call most of your blues either green or some kind of teal/aqua.

It’s interesting that you said you shy away from blue because it’s the complementary color to your orange hair. In garden color theory, we’re often encouraged to put complementary colors together. I think some of those blues would look lovely on you, although most redheads do look fabulous in green, I’ll admit.

everyone complaining about the arbitrary line between green and blue and forgetting to yell at hannah for that persona eyeshadow that is DEFINITELY GRAY, HANNAH, with an undertone i would call purple, i think. BUT i agree with your assertion that color categorization is a human construct... its actually really interesting how color categorization has developed over human history, starting with black and white (or shadow and light), red next, green after that i believe... i forget the exact order, but blue was one of the last colors to be defined (which explains homer's wine-dark sea). you probably already know this of course, im just obsessed with it conceptually and i love referencing it in poetry...
@abeautyproject3 жыл бұрын
The comments section has me loling because I see where everyone’s coming from, and yet I also see where Hannah is coming from. As a clasically trained painter, and knowing Hannah’s background in the arts, we both look at the “blues” in terms of how they happen to be categorized on the color wheel. A lot of these shades are just really blue-green, a tertiary color, and can go either way. A lot of artists would agree to see blue greens as more in the blue family than the green family, because we associate greens with a pure 50/50 mix of blue and yellow, or a more yellow leaning ratio. But in terms of makeup we make such few distinctions between color families and any hint of yellow constitutes a green. So nobody’s really wrong, here. It’s just great to see what people would call a for sure green vs a “well it’s kinda a blue.”

This perception of blue vs green reminds me of something. So apparently people are able to "see" more colors if they learned to categorize them separately. For instance, most people see pink as a distinct color from red, but light blue is still blue. Even though you only add white to red, we don't "see" light red, we "see" pink. If we learned that light blue was a different color from regular blue, we would perceive it as a different color, which is kind of fascinating to me. All this to say, I think color categories can be somewhat subjective, oddly enough

Blue is the most popular color in the world. That's probably why there are so many palettes with a pop of blue. People are just generally drawn to the color blue.
@kagitsune3 жыл бұрын
Also the blue pops perfectly complemented the warm (orange) neutrals that were so popular during those years! And blue is such a lively color. Somewhat rare in the botanic and mineral worlds. A color used to paint Saints, and to color charms against bad energy. But so ubiquitous in the sky and the ocean that it was often one of the last colors to be named while languages developed! It's just the color of our environment, so we don't bother to name it until our relationship with the world is complex and detailed enough to point it out as something unique!

My husband and I argued for years about whether his old car was blue or green. It was one of those deep teals that shifted in the sunlight a little bit. I said blue, because it looked like lake water. But he said green. And one day he got a ticket and the officer wrote "green" under the vehicle description, and I decided men just can't see as many colors as women. Haha.

I was actually watching an art video not too long ago about color mixing. The artist in the video (I think it was Sinix?) was talking about limits we run into when naming colors, and he mentioned a few things I found interesting: 1. All colors are on a spectrum, but for whatever reason there is more variety in the blue-green spectrum than there is in the red-orange spectrum even though they take up the same amount of space on the color wheel. 2. In English, we have fewer names for blues and greens than some other languages do. 3. If we had more specific names for warmer greens, cooler greens, and other “in between” shades (like if we never even thought to call a mint green or a teal solely “green” or “blue” because we always defaulted to the more specific name), he suggested that we would be better at noticing subtle hue variations and be better at identifying colors.
@morganbaldwinmiller3 жыл бұрын
LOL I would say at least eight of those are actually green... I tend to label teals and turquoises and peacocks etc "green" vs "blue" according to which one it leans toward. Like a peacock color is usually more green vs a teal, which to me looks more blue. And when it comes to duochrome shadows, I tend to distinguish it by the color that pops the most in it, like those oil slick shadows with a ruddy reddish or brown base with teal or blue etc shimmer, I'd umbrella term by whatever the shine is.
@ave_rie3 жыл бұрын
I dont mind that only 4 of the swatches are actually blue since they’re all pretty 😊 (Plus we all have diff eyes/ devices so that could change the color too) What irritates me is when brands get lazy with describing colors and settles with a completely unrelated naming scheme. Brands don’t always label/describe things “correctly” like when something is clearly mauve, they say it’s “rose”. Anything that has both blue and green or deep violet or gray, they say blue. Anything that looks like a type of metal, they say “bronze” even though it is obviously copper. All browns also get lumped together as “brown” even though the lighter ones can lean beige/cream or neutral orange and deeper ones can lean deep olive, chocolate, and almost grayish.
