This was a great review! I completely disagree with your preference, but the way you highlighted the characteristics of the paint was excellent! It does take multiple layers to achieve the vibrant colors, but for anyone looking to achieve a glazing effect, this is a strength! Remember it's all about using the characteristics of the paint to achieve the effect that you want folks! Great review!

I wrote to them about the 1/2 filled pans issue. They said a batch had been sent out with incorrect fillings. It wasn't until people started to contact them that they realised it had affected such a large batch. They sent me a voucher (UK only as I live in UK) to allow me to purchase 8 individual pans to replace the affected one's. I'm like you I love experimenting with different brands. I'm a little colour chart/wheel obsessed too :) Brightes Blessings to you .
@MandyvanGoeije9 жыл бұрын
+TheHandyRose Wow! Giving you the voucher is really good service! I just have three half filled pans, so it's not too bad. But maybe I could contact them. Things can always go wrong, of course. Hi Penny, this paint works amazing with layering and glazing. Sennelier is one of the very best for those techniques in my experience. I use them in my work frequently. And yes, in my tin box I could squeeze an extra pan on both rows :-)

@MandyvanGoeije9 жыл бұрын
+Evelyn W. The White Nights, I think, is THE brand to get when you want to get good paint on a budget. Some earth tones pale quite a bit, but most colours are good beyond belief for that price. Vibrant, deep and very strong...a box of that paint lasts you a looooooooooooooooong time!

Birdies are cute, eh? I love them!!! About the Sennelier...to be honest, I think the Sennelier might be disappointing when you're already working with Rembrandt. Perhaps it's an idea to purchase a few colours that are typical for Sennelier to try it out first.
@ArielleLavecchia9 жыл бұрын
+Mandy van Goeije, nods, I would probably get the mini/travel set (or a few tubes) which is tiny, to test it and see... I can see from your video that there are a few colours that don't measure up to other brands, I really love the Rembrandt set, the colours really suit my taste and I love how deeply pigmented they are! I was hoping that Sennelier would be just as wonderful. Sennelier has always intrigued me. I am going to be careful with buying it though... after your colour swatches... Do you think it would have been better if you got the tubes instead?
@MandyvanGoeije9 жыл бұрын
+Arielle Lavecchia I think it might be a good idea to try the tubes. It shouldn't be possible, but perhaps they are a little more intense than the pans. I am still completely surprised at the paleness of the Sennelier colours. I have made new colourcharts for better comparison, sprayed the paint with water before I made the colourchart...but the colours are still less intense and paler than Rembrandt. In fact, all Sennelier colour charts are as pale as my 5-year old Talens Van Gogh colour charts, which is the student's sibling of Rembrandt. That said, Sennelier has a few unique colours in their collection that might be well worth the purchase. I think I'd buy a few of those...in tubes. Who knows...the consistency might be just that tad more intense. I hope so!

Don't get me wrong. Sennelier paints also perform well. I've used a the tube sample set and found them very comparable to M Graham. In Amazon use a search of "m graham watercolor set" to reveal the sets of watercolor paints from M Graham.

I second m graham. I have a large Jones palette with my m grahams in it for studio use. just be carful if you are adding it to travel kits as it stays semi moist and can ooze/leak if you are in a humid area and your paint box is not flat. my favorite paints tho!
@JohnBFisher8 жыл бұрын
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich With the exception of Cadmium Green, all other M Graham colors "set" if you leave a fan blowing on them (on low) for several days. They remain tacky, but stable in watercolor pans. The good news is that very little pre wetting is needed. Just put a wet brush into the paints and go.

I just bought the 12 10ml tube set from Jerry's Artarama (already had the 12 + 6 half pan set for $60 - lots of sites have this deal) and 9 out of the 12 are in the basic 12 half pan set so I can refill them when they run out. The set comes in a metal 24 half pan plus size tin mixing palette (you can pull out the aluminum tube holder with some effort so you have an extra fabulous palette!) and you get 4 times as much paint as the 12 set for the same price - a must have! +dan dobrowolski I'm going to update my Sennelier review soon, or add a new one. Because I have discovered one massive forte of Sennelier. It is awesome layering paint. Hold vibrancy like no other brand in the layers. I don't like the paint for single-layer application because it never gets really lush and deep enough for my liking. But in layering it is outstanding. I think there the honey proves its quality. So Sennelier paint deserves a place in my studio for sure!

@lansingstlady9 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I wonder if the paints get "old". I have a different experience with it; although I do not have as many colors of it. I wouldn't trade them for my SH either. Or even my Lukas 1862. Can you stick the plastic sheet under the pan tray? Edit to add: Sometimes I think I should have invested in tube watercolors.....
@MandyvanGoeije9 жыл бұрын
+lansing street blues Good idea about the sheet! I don't know if this paint got 'old'. I don't think so, because this offer of colours (18 pans) is of recent. They didn't feel old, either...with that much honey in it, I didn't have to work my brush hard to get any paint onto it. The paint just dries up a fair bit paler than other Artist's brands that I've got. I've done a few more comparisons in the mean time and I keep ending up at the same findings. That being said, Sennelier still is good paint. Had I used this paint first, I'd have been very enthusiastic about it. That's the downside of comparative reviews...

Thank you for this wonderful detailed review! I was as surprised as you by your sample of Sennelier Ultramarine Deep. My swatch of this color from the tube is very rich and dark, much darker than what I see in your sample. I wonder if there is a difference between the tubes and the pans.

nice review I'm wondering what type of paper did you use in your "cookbook " ? (love the name for that) I have a new sennilier watercolor 24 pan set I did a swatch paint out and did not have the problem of them fading out however they are different than most WC paints I used hot and cold press paper from fabranio in bright white maybe this is the problem your having? these paints are beautiful when you start layering I think it's because of the honey in the pigment. ..they glow...I really enjoy your videos :) sorry about being so long winded lol
@MandyvanGoeije9 жыл бұрын
+Blissfulthings No, unfortunately the "cookbook" paper is not the problem with the Sennelier. Single layers actually do dry up quite a bit paler than Rembrandt, W&N, Schmincke Horadam and Daniel Smith, even when applied thick. I use the same paper for all these color charts, Canson Montval 140lbs. That being said, I've discovered that Sennelier is indeed very beautiful in layers...that is where you build up vibrancy with this brand. And I love the glow you get then too. But still, in this price range I'd prefer more intensity straight from the pans. Because in the two illustrations I've painted with Sennelier so far I've used up quite a lot of paint already. To get really vivid and vibrant colours, I needed not only apply quite a few layers, but also quite thick layers. So the paint flies out like crazy. I can see that some would prefer this brand over the others, though. It's got a quite unique character and it will undoubtedly fit certain styles of painting. So I think that it's not worse than the others, but different. And I might just be a little obsessed with intensity of colour ;-) Oh...and don't mind being long winded...as you see I'm guilty of the same "crime"... ;-)

Those Talens w/c look great. How do they stack up against Daniel Smith and Schmincke ?
@MandyvanGoeije8 жыл бұрын
+Alba Whiteman Talens Rembrandt are in the same category, really comparable. It's just a matter of preference for available colors in their collections and perhaps some brands differ in lightfastness and the amount of pigments they use in some paints. But there is no better or worse. ON this level it becomes a matter of finetuned personal preference. But I can highly recommend Rembrandt. I work with them as much as with the other brands!

Is there a relationship between vibrancy and transparency? i.e. more transparent means less vibrant?
@MandyvanGoeije7 жыл бұрын
No, not necessarily. Try to dilute some paints. Some colors will be more vibrant with the same dilution than others. It depends a lot on the density of the pigments and the medium that was used to bind the paints. Honey is known for offering super good vibrancy even when very transparent. Luminous, almost. Other binders do that a little less.

Love your hair! I had to come back to see if this set had the Venetian Red included as what I hoped for. Needed to see it. Since owning half pans of Warm Sepia and the Carmine I would like to point out 2 things. The PV19 by Sennelier is the single best replacement for the fugitive Opera Rose, IMO. You know it by this brand Carmine. It is a single pigment quinacridone and completely light fast. Gorgeous it is. Your Warm Sepia looks very wrong. I have the same half pan and it is very intense in mass tone but in mid and lighter it fades to a dull brown. I was serious earlier. Your hair does look great!

+Ivan Petrovskiy I recently bought an orange and I'm happy with it (apart from the lightfastness, but I don't expect that from student grade paints). They do get muddy fast but I still think they're the best student grade paint. I haven't tested out Van Gogh because I heard that there's lots of filler in there, but I'll take a look at them if you think they're better than White Nights.

They've got such tempting effect paints in their collection! The request was sent out only yesterday. Should Daniel Smith not be willing to provide a sample for reviewing, then your idea is very welcome!!! Thanks! It's so nice to see my reviews are so well appreciated that you guys are willing to go the extra mile to get some of these paints into my hands.
@erins.54209 жыл бұрын
+Mandy van Goeije sounds great! It's the least I can do since your review on the white nights was my deciding factor on getting them for my nephew, and I got a set for myself. Either way, it takes some time for the pans to dry properly and get them filled so I wouldn't be able to send them for another week or two. So let me know how it turns out with the sample dots. The duo chromes are out of this world let alone the paints in general are the best. I have heard schmincke lovers changing to Daniel smith or at least adding it to their schmincke palettes or replacing a few colors. Since DS doesn't offer anything but tubes I am going to start putting them in half pans and splitting the costs with a few friends and heck maybe even sell what I have left over since the paint are kind of expensive. $4 or less for a half pan I poured is way more cost affordable plus pans are easy for me to make because of where I live, but I want to get Daniel smiths approval before I go selling them.
@MandyvanGoeije9 жыл бұрын
+Erin S. Daniel Smith is newly available here in the Netherlands too now, through a German online store. And the paint is indeed massively expensive. It's those special effect paints that you refer to that make it really interesting, though. And perhaps unique colours these brands usually have. Recently also golden QoR came to Europe...about the same price, I think. Heard very enthusiastic reviews about that paint as well. But I didn't see any special effect paints in their collection, so I wonder if the quality justifies those high prices. I thought these two brands would be cheaper in the US...that Europeon protectionism had upped the prices, but apparently the Daniel Smith are expensive overseas too... Makes me want to try and find out if they're that good even more! Really wonder what texture they have, etc. Great idea...sharing your paint with artist friends... And paint from tubes is great! I own a lot of half pan sets, and boxes filled with half pans, but I work from tube-filled really cheap plastic filled palettes most! I let them dry completely...works like a charm! Just not for gouache...that becomes brittle and breaks into small pieces...but for watercolour...absolutely! If I HAD to choose, I'd choose tubes!

+Mandy van Goeije I also prefer to fill my own pans or palette instead of buying pans pre made?! I have heard many cool things about QoR too! I am going to a demo at an art supply here in Phoenix soon and plan to pick a few tubes up. I am kind of a watercolor border of sorts? I actually love the technical side first before actual artistic side.....ya I'm crazy. I love to see how the pigments from brand to brand (I don't go by names) differ and love to swatch and find ways to make/force them to perform vs actually painting (I love realistic botanical) and taking online tutorials with Anna Mason which is AMAZING! Who knows by the time I get the pans to dry with DS the QoR maybe dry to and if you do except care packages I could sneak a few QoR in as well. Have you been to handprint.com? The watercolor information there is out of this world awesome!

but why do you need so intense paints in watercolors?
@abbyrivers99718 жыл бұрын
my thoughts exactly, Sennelier had a very good quality, Honey is just a different base as to Gum Arabic. Love the Sennelier.

Well, you know what? I've worked a lot with this paint since the review and I've grown to absolutely love it for its sublime layering qualities. I get more intensity by layering and that looks amazing....there will be a big review on 100 Sennelier colors soon!

I live in a very " green" area of new york state,USA. And i never use any green straight from the manufacturer.,,they always get adjusted....
@MandyvanGoeije3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the greens ask that of painters, right? Green is never just green...

One of the things that Sennelier is known for is there glazing properties. I think that is one reason they are a bit less intense. They are great for layering the same color on top of itself in many layers. Not all brands are that good for glazing.

The frugal crafter has a great review that shows the glazing properties.

I've used this paint a lot since the review and I'm doing a new review soon because I also grew to love the glazing properties that are sublime. I have a 100-color set waiting to be swatched and reviewed now, so I'm totally Sennelier fan today! Using it more than other brands at the moment.

hello, my name is Arwen Schaffler. I am from south Africa... please could you send me some of these paints. I am trying to get my school to do art and I want to show them that we can create some amazing art but still getting supplies started and cant find nice brushes or paints. you are so talented and I would really like to try some of your pieces to back up my proposal. I love your channel!!!

I'm sorry, Arwen Catz, but I can't send you any paints. I'm not a manufacturer or art supply store. I'm an artist/art teacher and buy all these paints for personal and professional use and review them on the side. If you'd like some samples, best contact the manufacturers...good luck! ~ Mandy

Is it important what the manufacturer calls it ? Use it and define it !
@MandyvanGoeije4 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about color names? Important? Well, lives don't depend on it, but it can be very confusing for people embarking on artist grade paints that paints from different brands carry the same names and then are completely different colors. And...in addition, many color names originate in the origin of the original pigments. If you know that, it can be very surprising to see a color name turning into a totally different and often farfetched color, seen from that perspective.

I'm so sorry...and I agree with you. They've moved into an aviary where they can fly....these were not birds for a small cage. One was fine with it, but the other needed to be able to fly all tday...and it does...

Hi ! Sennelier is the brand I use the most. I also have some colours from Daniel Smith , Winsor & Newton, Rembrandt, Holbein and Schmincke. The pans are made by extrusion, when they are new you need to water them and let them soak for a while. The more you use them more intense the colours will be. :)
@MandyvanGoeije8 жыл бұрын
+hgodl I have found Sennelier to be the best brand for layering. Single layer colour I prefer more lush brands for. But in layering...oh my, Sennelier rocks there!
@HgoArt8 жыл бұрын
+Mandy van Goeije Yes, I do a lot of layering! :) l think Senneelier prioritises transparency and vibrancy of colour. Also, they use natural iron oxides in the yellow ochre and siennas, instead of synthetics like PY42 and PR101 pigments used in most brands, so, that colours require more work to dilute properly. That set has a lot of multiple pigment colours and some fugitives I dont use. Frankly I don’t see many difference between the brands I use, maybe because I've never used one brand exclusively, I pick the colours I like by the pigments they contain and use almost exclusively single pigment colours, so they are more predictable regardless of brand. I mainly use Sennelier because I can buy it realy cheap and they rewet well since I fill my palettes with tube paint.
@MandyvanGoeije8 жыл бұрын
+hgodl I began by using full sets of one brand. But like you I work with boxes filled with pans from different brands these days. If it wasn't for my curiosity and the reviews... I'd probably not buy the full sets anymore...
