Swatching the new Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour 24 half pan set

Hi everyone, I hope you’re doing well.
Today I’m going to be swatching this 24 half pan professional watercolour set from Winsor & Newton. They had a previous version that is still on sale in some places, so I’m going to talk a little about the difference between sets and my personal preference. Hope you enjoy it!

Hi Carol, great buy and beautiful mixing chart..perhaps I will do one with my own pallet. I actually got the 12 tube set from Jackson which cost me 35 dollars because I got the 10 percent off. I was so happy that I did a giveaway in my channel for the cotman set so I wanted the smaller box which is white. So the following month for my bday I bought the Winsor and Newton Pro travel just for the watercolors which were 44 dollars and I switch them on the pallets. a few weeks later in January I notice there was another Winsor and Newton sale..I check out this 24 pan set but since I had 12 already I did not want to get more repeats since I still have the tube set. I ended buying 12 more colors of my choice individually which were all but 2 under 5 dollars. So I pay double for my 25 set pallet but I did get many colors of my choice and I can still add 1 more for 26 since the box ware originally for the Cotman watercolors which are a little larger than the Pro. I still have the tubes and will refill them as needed. You should try Rosa Gallery they are opaque and some are granulating for a very low price. I agree with the white I dont like it on my pallets either and yes Ivory Black is the best. I mix my Daniel Smith one with Ultramarine and it makes a really nice moon glow color which granulates beautifully.

Thank you for sharing, W&N don’t get a lot of advertisement these days as they haven’t come with anything new for a while, but they have beautiful colours. There are often promos for them as you mentioned. I have a few Rosa Gallery and really like them, they have beautiful colours, easy to work with and are very affordable. Ah, and colour charts are great to discover colour combinations, I encourage you to do it!

This set of paints makes me feel a pinch of sadness. I had ordered it in Nov 2022 from Amazon at an amazing price of AUD73. After waiting over a month, the sellers cancelled the order and refunded me. They then raised the price to AUD90+, and I was upset so I didn’t order it again. Before I knew it, they then raised the price permanently to AUD140+. This is double the price of the original order I made. I’m upset that they are allowed to cancel the order just like that and then raise the price 😢I have decided not to order it. Maybe if the price drops significantly as a special deal then I will consider it. Thanks for the video, it was good to see the colours swatched out. I already have 12 W+N professional colours plus some Cotman greens, but most of these colours in your set I don’t have. They would have complemented my existing set well.

Oh that’s very unfortunate… I’d be annoyed if it happened to me. This set seems to have a huge price fluctuation across different websites and even in time, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it got reduced again. I got it from Amazon UK, I don’t know if that’s an option to you, sometimes Amazon overseas shipping is not that bad (I got things from Japan many times).

Is the raw sienna omitted from the color chart? Maybe I missed where you said you didn’t include it. I didn’t realize there was a newer 24 palette. Thank you for the detailed information!

Hi! Yes, I had to make a choice otherwise the chart would have been huge! As I included yellow ochre and raw umber I left raw sienna out. It’s a beautiful colour nevertheless. Thanks for watching 🙂

Hi Christiane, first of all thank you 😊 in this case I made a grid with the single pigment colours in the set and painted the colour mixes between them in mass tone at the bottom part, and the same mixes diluted at the top part. I can share in a future video ways of doing that if you’re interested 😉

This comment will probabaly get lost but are you able to fit full pans in that tin? I use few colors and would prefer the larger pans

Hi! I think you could fit full pans if you have less colours, why not? I’ve never seen full pans of Winsor and Newton but if they’re the standard size it should work 😉

I have the set, yes full pans fit in the rails..the modern tins don't tend to fit a third row in the middle though. A full pan profile I'd the same depth as the half pan, but not as wide as two half pans because of the extra plastic in between. You can get 7 full pans across each set of rails.

Hey there, I have the old set and I dont know if I should do the upgrade. Its literally brand new.(is the old one inferior?) Can you give an oppinion about this? Thank you

If you have a brand new set I don’t see reason to buy another one, since many colours repeat in both. What you can do is check the colours you don’t have in your set, and if any of them appeal to you, buy them separately ;)

@@julianc691 Both Schmincke and Winsor and Newton have a line of professional paints and a student line. Schmincke’s is called Horadam and W&N’s is called professional. The respective student ones are Akademie and Cotman. If yours are artist grade, they’re both of very quality so it comes down to preference really. I have both and enjoy both. Each line has their own unique colours so I’d suggest you check videos here and blogs like Jane Blundell where there are many swatches.

Those colors are rough... I'll take my Daniel Smith's over these any day... surprised by the amount of blotchyness and overall uneveness in that color chart... pass!

There is nothing wrong with the paints… what you call unevenness is texture due to the pigment, not a quality issue. I’m surprised that someone used to Daniel Smith wouldn’t know that, since their catalogue is famous for having so many textural pigments and mixes. If you prefer a smooth and flat wash, then Schmincke or Holbein would be a better choice imho.

@@coloredcarol8074Maybe it is just your color chart and how the colors were blended and put down? The color chart I use by DS are vibrant and smooth... sure, some of the color granulate but do so differently that the ones in your chart.. especially in the darker areas.

@@pesto12601 If anything the paper is what interfere the most with the end result. Given, I didn’t use my most expensive paper, I rarely do for colour charts. It was just an exercise to see the colour mixes possible, but I’m aware they’d perform infinitely better on cotton paper.
