In my experience, most of the time these areas with a lot of broken bottles. Were pushed flat with a loader or bulldozer somewhere at the end where the machine stopped, you will find more whole ones.

I've often wondered why so many are broken? If it was kids with rocks, the rocks would still be there and they aren't. Almost a solid mound of broken sodas. Maybe commercial returns? Pay for competitors bottles, break them & we'll give you one of ours? Or maybe break the old style and replace them with the new style? An unbroken bottle could return to the market. Maybe ones that broke while being re-capped? Anybody know?
