History context behind using 17 and 18 as curse words; it hails from our old nose believes. With the entire pantheon of old gods being together, then when Loke (or Loki to you Americans) shows up as the last man, being the 18'th at the party, all hell breaks loose. So saying Attans would have been back in the day extremely powerful, while sjutton was the lesser one. *the more you know*

I was an exchange student in Sweden Stockholm for a semester and among other courses, I needed to attend Swedish language course. They taught us academic Swedish but not the practical one which the people in the street were using. Though I hold a basic talk but swearing was not included in the syllabus but Swedes swear all the time.

This is pretty funny - thanks for doing it. I always thought "också" with these was especially funny, in my English mind it sounds like "shit also!!" Which is hilarious. BTW, since it's so hot here right now, I went to get a fan but forgot the word - then I remembered that it would be potentially awkward to ask people where a fan was (Var ligge din fan? Har du fan? Jag kan få en fan?). Incidentally Elgiganten had no fans.. They couldn't give a fan.. No fans to give.. Anyway. Thanks for the vid. Still have lots to learn.

What's the etymology of "attans" and "sjutton" being used as swearwords? If it were 10 or below, I'd guess it were related to a commandment. I knew most of these already, but it was very good to hear you weigh in on the relative strength of the swears. I'd love to see Part II.

Hi, i know also that jävla can be translated with the strongest form "f******g", as pewdiepie mentioned in his video. My question is: is there a way to understand when this swear word is used in order to express, as an intensifier, "damn" or "f***", or even the devil himself? For istance, the phrase "du är jävla, en förbannad jävel" from the Persona's screenplay of Bergman, is literally referring to the "devilish", as "You are a devil, an absolute (or damned) devil/demon". Greetings from Italy and have a nice day.
@sayitinswedish Жыл бұрын
"Jävla" is the intensifier and cannot be used as an object, where as "djävul" (or coll. "jävel") is an actual devil. So "din jävla djävul" would be "you damn/fucking devil".

Like I said in the video, "fan" is to the swear words, like "hej" is to the greetings. It's used all. the. time. It's used in the same way as the f-word but it's not as bad. Use it! No one will bat an eye.
