Well, just as the Cuba missile crisis where the US wouldn't allow the Soviets to place nukes in Cuba which is so close to the US, the reason Putin further advanced the invasion of Ukraine (don't forget that Crimea has been occupied since 2014, and has regularly had its citizens swapped out with Russian citizens since then) was because NATO was gonna place missile silos in Ukraine, and Putin didn't want that.
