@@hoovysimulator2518 I would really recommend you or him paying for F1TV if you or him are fans of the sport. You get to watch practically everything, at anytime. Old races he might remember, even their qualifying at some GP's. Live driver cams, team radio, data overview with sector times and tires, complete track map to follow them and so on and so on.. It is money extremely well spend if you like the sport. Can't imagine ever ending that subscription. 14EUR/month or 110 for a year with 20% off the first year atm actually. Seems like a commercial but it really enhanced my F1 experience.

My biggest gripe with Viaplay as a Dutchy? I never knew them before their F1 takeover. And I think that's also where all the hostility comes from, if they would kick in the door with something less "extreme", especially after the first year ever a Dutch person won an F1 title, I think the anger wouldn't be so widespread. I don't think that there are real "European" tv shows here. 95 % that's shown are American TV shows, to begin with. Personally, I watch a lot of Kdrama's and Nordic crime BECAUSE they are different to what's on the TV/on the rest of Netflix.

Literally the most popular kdrama of all time is on Netflix, with more coming out Netflix is trying to expand into Asia for some years now and they’re doing pretty ok, especially in Korea where they produced several big hits both in Korea and internationally (Kingdom, Sweet home, Love alarm, it’s ok to not be ok, and of course, Squid game) As a Chinese who grew up watching kdrama and Asian content in general, I have a pretty good impression of Netflix, they are making some really good shit and I know many Chinese wish we can have Netflix so we don’t have to suffer from the domestic shitty giants like Tencent or Iqiyi

I am quite Americanophile in general, but I do agree that this cultural domination thing is really getting insane. I feel like many young people (especially in my nerdy social sphere) cared significantly more for the American elections than the f*cking NATIONAL elections a year later. We all import their completly retarded political culture, wich is the worst thing. What was the point of arguing about effing BLM if there’s virtually no significant black minority in most European countries, and where there is, it certainly doesn’t have problems with the American police. I understand why the American media is so dominant tho. Besides it being the natural consequence of making English the main working language of Europe, American media dominates EVERYWHERE. It’s always been the centerspot of global cinematography, and the amount, quality (its relative) and diversity of Hollywood production can’t be countered. But it’s possible (in large part due to Netflix) for modern European shows to become continental or global hits. La Casa de Papel, Lupin, DARK, or the infinite pool of Nordic krimi stuff (From the lesser known shows, I’d recommand How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast), Undercover and Kastanjemanden on Netflix to everyone). I live near Prague if anyone’s wondering.

Netflix wants to make money by providing people with content they'll watch, at the end of the day I don't think they care where it comes from as much as some people would like to think. While there is legitimate reason to pursue both of those goals for the EU, the reality is that France is pushing said policies for primarily its own military industry and to bolster French hard power.

For a couple of years things were good - we had regular TV, On-demand boxes and Netflix to supplement it with international offers - that situation was great. Now every single publisher has decided that it can make more money by starting their own streaming service to nickel-and-dime folks for everything they're worth. I don't want to spend my time off having to look up on a site who has the rights for Formula 1, Premier League and IIHF this time of the year. How did this generation of suits and ties figure making that the consumers problem was a good idea? No wonder piracy is exploding left and right - I can't take a step without being bombarded with ads for VPNs for "internet security" who just happen to support P2P. So we said fuck it, I'll just watch KZbin content instead. I'd rather support individuals who spend 100% of their income making thing I care about than corporations who spend half their budget making shit like cooking shows I never watch, documentaries about niche fetish cultures, spending inordinate money to air poorly upscaled shows from the 90s or fighting over who gets to air what half of the soccer field.

"Is content originating in Europe important in itself?" - Fuck yes. Just take a look at the world around us right now. We Europeans are importing American culture like never before, including really shitty things from their toxic political atmosphere and culture. Some people even go as far as caring more about American elections than the elections in their own fucking country, or Europeans elections for that matter. I'm not an American, I'm a European so it makes a lot more sense to me to consume content made by Europeans that take place in Europe. We have the ability to produce amazing content, as well as great movies. The reason we don't do it more often is because we don't try as hard and don't invest as much. As for the trojan horse thing, I don't really care. I'd rather have French and German content than American content anytime, and I'm from neither of those countries.

As a Swede, I've used Viaplay for many years now and it's pretty good. Sometimes has movies Netflix doesn't. (not really into the sport side of the platform so isn't really sure what to think about that) One thing I dislike is the fact that you have to pay to rent some movies, even though you already pay every month. Like, I have to pay like 15 euros a month and STILL have to pay 5 euros to rent some movies. Yes it's just me being a cheap asshole

The problem is language, while English is just so much more understood around the world and even in Europe than any other European language. Which means one English Netflix show has a larger audience than any European language show.

Korean media and anime are a counter argument to that, if it has good quality people will watch it. The problem in Europe is the lack of capital, I wish we had more co-productions or that some media companies would merge so we could have big budget movies and series.

I don't disagree, but I think you might be confusing cause-effect here. English is popular precisely because American media is so prevalent and universal in Europe. Hell, I know more about American history than the history of some of the countries culturally and geographically closer to me. If people are exposed to a language so often as young Europeans are exposed to English then it's only natural that they will start to pick up that languages and learn to speak it more easily. However, language in itself is not that important in appreciating music, series or movies. I started consuming American content way before I knew how to speak a word of English. Series like Dark or Squid Game are immensely popular around the world even if they're in a language most people don't understand.

I wonder whether Amazon will cause any trouble for Viaplay's strategy. They've been making moves into the sports space in Europe, presumably for the same reason as Viaplay. They bought up most the rights to tennis in the UK, and some rights to rugby and football (the Premier League). Theoretically, they have a lot more financial firepower than Viaplay.

I prefer Amazon so much more than Sky. In Germany it feels like thet scam you, as they charge you a minimum of 30€ a month, for very lacking content. Amazon Prime is very common here and if I can watch occasionally a CL game for “free” than it is much better. Right now if I wanted to watch all Games of my Club Leverkusen I had to invest 80€ monthly as there are too many streaming services. Dazn and Sky alone are both 30€ and don’t even provide all Bundesliga games.

The big hole in Viaplay's plans of using F1 to penetrate the Dutch market is that, as far as i understand, the F1 streaming deal is not 100% exclusive. You can get an F1 pro streaming subscription for half the price of viaplay's service, and realistically almost no Dutch F1 fan is going to care enough about the other content to justify spending double.

What viaplay is doing just feels very agressive, we already had amazing f1 coverage with ziggo (i thought it was great) and i dont think viaplay can do much better for the dutch audience, its just forcing them to either viaplay or f1 pro where a lot of people first just had it because they had tv from ziggo, and ziggo sport with their kpn tv subscription. Now its adding in a new monthly cost on top of our regular tv, that doesnt get you any friends.

@@Definitely_Melnyx Depends. Spotify pay 2/3s (66%) of its subscription income to artists, while other major music streaming platforms pay close to the same, or lower then Spotify. Apple music (52%). KZbin music (55%). Napster (70%). Amazon music (60%*). * No official number, but estimated. It certainly is true that Spotify pays less PER STREAM then all of these, but as a total of the subscription earned, they pay a lot (and it doesn't seem like their financials could support higher payout rations, i.e. they would be bankrupt unless they can find areas to save money). The number is even more impressive, considering that this is dragged down by loads of ad-supported listeners, that currently isn't paying the payout price with the amount of ads served.

I am a German myself. There are nice TV formats and high quality documentaries over here. But for series and especially for movies, I would always prefer the American stuff. There is simply not enough money and creative room to get lots of excellent content in this field here. Every country for itself is (at least compared to the US) a rather small market and if there is not enough money in the system, the investments are too reserved and bound to harsh regulations. So the productions are made in a way that guarantee some calculable viewership and market share, but that barely create actually outstanding and fresh content. And uniting the small European markets to one big one does not make that much sense. Because of the different languages of each country, you cannot simply adopt content from other European countries. So it doesn't actually make any difference if a streaming service or TV channel translates content from the USA or let's say Norway. But because the US content has had a way higher budget and more creative freedom in the first place, it is simply normally better. And because it has already a reasonable market at home, the streaming/broadcast rights are also relatively cheaper to buy. European stuff most of the time simply can't compete with this.

South Korea has been investing significantly into culture in the last few years and has a result we're getting lots of great shows and movies that are enjoyed not only in Korea but in the entire world. As for Japan, it's hard for me to find a single person in my group of friends that has never watched any anime. South Korea, mind you, has a population of 51 million. Germany has more than 80 million. There is absolutely no reason why Germany or France can't produce great content in the global stage.

Our two statements actually match very well. You said that South Korea invests significantly more into culture. I wrote in a nutshell that Germany does not. I simply explained how this came to be and what follows out of it, not saying that it have to happen everywhere like this. In these countries you mentioned, they handled the same problems very differently, so the outcome could become very different as well. They actively gave more money and didn't attach it to that strict regulations.

There is one thing I think you're wrong on: Many European countries don't dub most English movies like we Germans do, they add subtitles like the Dutch do it! Even if those uncomfortable with English and unwilling to read Subtitles don't listen, there is a huge market for European movies that is mostly ignored

I think your comment is very interesting. Here in Sweden we have a huge domestic film industry, and our population is only 10 million. Most shows and movies I watch are Swedish, and I think the same goes for a lot of people here. It's not that we don't enjoy foreign content - quite the opposite! I as Dutchman personally think there are better Dutch alternative names than Hoog, pronounced as Hoaj (Spanish j), meaning "High". Any Dutch verb with oo will be mispronounced by foreigners as the Dutch oe (which ironically would be pronounced like the Dutch oo if it were an English oe). So the name will be pronounced as Hook. Just like with Overtoom before the name change to Manutan. Was that your intention?

First of all, the Romulus name is not gone, and there will be another channel with that name starting up soon. The reason for Hoog is that it’s weird enough to be remembered, short enough that anyone can type it with ease, and there are very little channels with the same scale with the same name.

If recent years have shown anything it’s that the language of the content doesn’t matter to English speaking audiences as long as it’s good. This is the same reason Europe watches English spoken content too. Sure there’s rigidities, but by and large quality content will be viewed.

Competition is always good and I'd like to see fresh content of course, but I won't be holding my breath. So far as my experiences go with foreign productions, they are usually sub-par production quality in comparison to American films/shows. Notable exception is of course the BBC, which has put out some amazing content as far as drama's and historically related pieces. There have also been a few foreign zingers that have come out, such as Parasite or Squid Games.

I'm Dutch and I knew viaplay from my many trips to Sweden, but it was always a Sweden thing, just like we have videoland, which could be seen as the Dutch viaplay. I'm not so sure why they would think this is a good idea. I'm not paying a 100 euros just to watch f1 when previously it was included in my regular tv subscription.

I do think more non-american content is important, I have a feeling the media we consume, along with the preconceptions it holds, influence us more than we might think, which results in a somewhat disproportional spread of American ideas that might not be true. Not that there is anything special about the Americans in that sense, since all countries seem to have their own cultural biases, it's more an issue of balance. I don't really know if those effects are provable, but it seems to be a reasonable assumption overall. and hey, I was wondering, what would be some good general readers on European institutions? I know a lot of tidbits from several different sources but I always feel like I never got a good general introduction to the topic. I'm talking about all the different institutional organisms, the general legal frameworks/precepts and maybe some analysis on how well they work. I have seen some short KZbin videos talking about that but it would be nice to have a book or longer article/lecture series.

Its happening same here in America too. Alot of our own politics and social beleifs, are imported from Europe aswell. It goes both ways, and is more equal than you expect. Truth is, we care about british elections and european stuff too, despite us not even living there. Americans tend to view Europe as a neighbhor, and not a whole lot different from us. Were all allies, and we all have the same first world beleifs. Its actually kinda surprising seeing how Europeans view Americans as almost foreigners, but Americans view Europeans as just next door neighbhors.

I mean the transatlantic exchange has been here with all of us since Columbus made the existance of the New world a basic knowledge and I mean USA is not that different from Europe. We might have different approaches to some things but our ultimate common goal is to promote freedom and basic human rights. USA just so happens to have stronger impact in new stage of transatlantic exchange bcs its market is basically bigger than European ones that still act thx to language barrier, as their own separate, and as economics teaches us: economics of scale win in sheer numbers. So we either need to unite and homogenize European market or participate in the US market more proactively.

"Old" nationalism is dying and many countries are having an identity crisis (some better some worse) because the old 'base' for it is dying/getting destroyed by globalism; so they struggle to protect some semblance of it by holding onto the past, especially when the whole world is slowly inching towards homogeneity. Netflix is crushing traditional media platforms, specially tv among the younger generations. If his trend continuous localy produced shows will desapear, making the US way of making shows the only option available. As a spanish I love having the oportunity to watch shows produced by the other european countries because none of them are the same, the tone, the pace, the relations... and you can even tell by watching the first episode. This diversity must be protected and we need the EU to ensure it.

Regarding F1 and racing, I really like Viaplay since they have all the major motor sports (except WRC) at least in Sweden. One subscription gives you F1, IndyCar, WEC, IMSA & Nascar which is pretty nice.

Sounds like a similar problem here in Canada where Bill C10, requiring 30% of algorithmic content shown to Canadians be of Canadian origin, was tabled and thankfully shot down for the time being. The question of "is content orginating in Europe important?" is a pretty loaded question as it depends on why it's being made. As there's a difference between a market demand for it by users/veiwers (bottom-up) and purely using as a tool of cultural influence by governments (Top-down). For example in the bottom-up approach, it can be nice to not have to read subtiles (in the case of non English or Spanish speakers) for viewers or to have relatable cultural ideas/issues/events in the content they watch. In this example the European content makes sense as it satisfies a demand and is actually watched. However in the Top-down approach content is made for its own sake or to fill a quota, regardless of the veiwer's wishes or interest. Making it less lightly that people will engage with it which either wastes slot of resources or leads to low quality production.

For me I always open for more "friendly" business competition so we can get more contents especially with streaming platforms Disney is milking the George Lucas franchises mostly star wars and marvel stuff by introducing more new or old meta characters, amazon is tapping into old or underrated comics (invincible and the boys) they're also bringing in more lord of the rings content, and HBO with DC. The European streaming services will be a welcome addition in my eyes the introduction of sports as streaming service will be a rocky road ahead NFL, NBA and other American sports has been thinking to do the same thing but as a dual use for both standard TV and streaming

Too bad, it is only on Netflix (or where they choose to sell it, which is Netflix). I personally don't like the idea that a company can integrate itself in the entertainment industry like Netflix does by both produce and distribute. This type of integration has happened before, which is why movie producers were banned from owning theaters in 1938 in the US (which was abandoned in 2020, so...)

I think that this is sort of distorted with respect to Netflix. Netflix is a major video streaming platform but so are KZbin, Disney and Hulu. None of these platforms are in any way restricted to American content nor is it even a goal of theirs to serve American content. They would be just as happy to show people videos made in Estonia or South Korea as Los Angeles. When these companies discuss long term subscriber growth, they are probably looking to India and China.
