6:48 I'm an Indian immigrant to sweden and I initially made a good amount of friends and was always adored. Was that cool dude in the gang. But then they saw me being pro-Trump on FB and I've been left out and ignored. My pro Trump posts and Milo memes did the job! My home country seems far far tolerant to different opinions than this beautiful country Sweden.

I think that's because populism isn't really a thing in Sweden. You never see a crowd cheer for any politicians like you do in other countries. Trump was elected (partly) because of populism which isn't really anything we swedes take in to account when looking at the validity of a candidate. If you want to know how a swede thinks about Trump, imagine him not being famous. That's at least my 2 cents on it.

The part about Sweden taking moral high ground on beeing peace loving and at the same time competes as the worlds largest arms exports per capita is spot on. Hypocricy(?) at its finest.
@T1hitsTheHighestNote
@T1hitsTheHighestNote 7 жыл бұрын
E5150 that's our version of the military-industry complex - the arms industry means skilled industry jobs. That's why it's important for our government to have good diplomatic relations with countries such as Saudi Arabia. The whole thing becomes quite funny when out current cabinet calls themselves feminist, but can't really critcize them on human rights.
@Nirvana7734
@Nirvana7734 6 жыл бұрын
@ E5150 - I am by no means a firearm-enthusiast, but you do realize that manufacturing weapons does not necessitate that your country cannot still be moral. I am not so naive to think that these weapons could not be used for horrific purposes if sold to the wrong parties, but if you truly believe that the manufacture and sale of weapons is immoral, then we might as well condemn every gun store as being immoral as well.
@oldmoviemusic

I don't think that the point was that Sweden's gun industry is immoral but rather that their hypocrisy is.

If there is nothing immoral about Sweden's gun industry, then in what way are they being hypocritical regarding morals?

Nirvana: Because they sell it to Saudi Arabia and for War on both sides? I mean come on, this is basically lord of war stuff. This hypocrisy is really wide spread. Especially regarding Saudi Arabia. A state supporting radical islamists all through europe (Belgium especially), giving a fuck about human rights, highly nonsecular, invading Jemen etc. BUT they are the US/UN gatekeepers. "Weird" enough.

I'm from Sweden. People are very private and don't talk to each other on busses etc. But I like to provoke that sometimes, and I start to talk and joke with people who never met me on the bus for example. And I noticed that people's eyes almost allways lights up! I think there are many Swedish people who long after a more southern european way of interaction with each other! Greetings from Sweden ❤

Yes, thats part of Sweden’s unique culture. No, “we” don’t long for any southern culture, a quiet relaxing ride on the bus or train is just fine, “we” don’t need constant flimflam of wannabe comedians. ;-)

Well, it's not like I'm entering the bus and start a comedian show for everyone. And as I said, I only like to break the social unwritten rules SOMETIMES! I also mostly have a quiet typical swedish ride on the bus. But when I am in that "rebellious mode", I like to see what happens if you break the limits. And about 95 % of people's reactions are extremely positive, and then they themselves starts to open up! Some have said things like: Vilken härlig person du är, får jag ge dig en kram!?

The point he made about Sweden not being very socialist economicly is kind of intresting. As a Swede I've always felt that my country absorbed socialism more like a cultural system, then an economical one, which is kind of unfortunate. I like the idea of certain socialist systems, concerning the economy. I just wish socialists and the likes would stay the f**k away from culture. Thats where they are doing the most harm, with their overly collectivist view of humanity and compromising with freedom of speach and expression. Not to speak of the new wave of bullshit like safe-spaces and micro-agressions. Sweden essentially recieved a headshot from a post-marxist sniper... and now we are dying of post-modernism.

What? That's not even close to what I ment. I ment that some socialist ideas, like wellfare and universal healthcare, are good. But I want the socialist ideas about culture/identity, etc., the ideas that are mostly post-modernism, or repackaged maoist/stalinist bullshit, to stay out of the discussion about culture and identity. I'd say im a cultural-libertarian but economicly a democratic socialist.

Hold on. I haven´t payed attention to the swedish comedy scene for roughly 15 years and back then this guy was a prodigy. Everyone talked about him. Fast forward and the biggest names in stand-up are people who have taken a blatant political stance - TO THE LEFT. Özz Nujen for example is all over, everywhere. And what´s his act? Being a Kurd, making fun of the swedish king and the second biggest party in Sweden, the Swedish Democrats. I always thought Aron and swedish media would be the perfect match and that they would allow him to share his views on a daily basis, just like they did with Özz, because he is not the typical blonde blue-eyed swede. But Aron COMPLETELY disappeared. After reading up on Aron and what he does now I UNDERSTAND COMPLETELY. Aron, you decided to follow your mind and your heart, despite the fact that you would be lost from the limelight for over a decade with no media attention and deny a shitload of money because of that. I fucking salute you. Aron Flam, you are a SWEDISH HERO.

I've got friends that work in immigration and the current demands on newly arrived people are 72 hours of cultural orientation and applying and attending Swedish language classes is not a demand either they still get welfare checks child support and Healthcare even if they don't bother going to Swedish classes that's how fucking stupid our current system is

I live i Sweden and I can tell you this guy does not know anything about Swedish history, first the workers revolution was fought by massive demonstrations over a period of 20-30 years, the right murdered several union leaders to try and shut them down, the workers did not have the right to vote, voting was based on income only 10% had the right to vote (the rich) The only reason the workers got the right to vote was because of the Russian revolution where the rich got murdered and all their wealth was taken from them by force, a few months after the Russian revolution the rich in Sweden decided to give the workers the right to vote out of fear, massive demonstrations where held daily, after the workers got the right to vote they voted for the party they started via the unions, The Social Democrats, before that Sewds where so poor over 1/4 moved to the US because of brutal poverty...

Tbh i always find the concept of weighted average voting to be interesting. I just couldn't comprehend the concept of Univ. Voting Right. How could someone who always pays taxes, contributes to society, law abiding, etc have the same voting value as an ex convict who might not have been rehabilitated for example.. Or someone who lives only on welfare to have the same voting value as an average investment banker?? The concept really baffles me Univ. Voting Rights could work in a very homogenic societies with relatively small population such as the scandinavian countries, but i really2 doubt its effectiveness on big diverse countries.

I think the demo-socialist regimes in Europe overpassed its people. I'm pro alternating ideologies every one or two generations so the parties don't start treating the population as their sheep. Think who's gaining now and after with this crazy immigration policy? Higher crime, more expensive housing, more low skilled labour down the road - leading to lower wages. Do you really think the left is on Swdish peoples' side now? Because I see a big scam going on. If the immigrants get the right to vote Swedish people and way of life are done.

The reason socialism works so well in Sweden (though it has its issues most people ignore). Having a homogenous culture is required when attempting to create economic homogeneity. If social democratic policies were implemented in America, it would fail, not only from the size of America, but also from the individualistic culture we have.

sweden was a glorious nation, world leading in alot of areas, it was impossible NOT to find a job, there were good systems for education and getting you into fields if you wanted to. welfare, health care that was top notch, a military to be proud of, very safe, you could support you and you family with having a job, buy a house. good luck having a decent life in america by having ONE job if you aren't a succesfull person.

Sweden is still a glorious nation, and world leading in many areas. It's not that Sweden has declined, but rather the world that has developed since ww2. It's not that some won and we lost, rather more countries that aren't shit poor and got decent education (that is not a bad thing). The issue of finding job in Sweden is a myth. If you're born and raised here, and has attended school, you're guaranteed to find a good paying job (in contrast to the states, where you sometimes need 3 of them). However, if you're immigrant, you have a very hard time finding a job. That's the issue we face.

haha, Sweden is wealthy because of arms-deals during the second world war?... to selective to even be called a simplification. but yes, having had long stretches of peace surely doesn't hurt. Its a factor along-side the industrialization, in which Sweden managed to create a lot of wealth that, thanks to unions, was dispensed to the workers who could then consume and create demand... well you know the cycle. That and a generally hard-working population eventually given the basic human social securities that is necessary to keep a healthy economy growing over the long run; free education, non-profit associations promoting and enabling participation and investing in its population, the psychological safety of knowing you can educate and even re-educate yourself and switch jobs if the ambition-bug bites and you decide you wan´t to invent the next Spotify, start a clothing company, pursue your dream of becoming a researcher or become the next international pop-phenomenon. this is, in essence, how Sweden still is one of the worlds richest most stable economies and consistently top-ranked as one of the best countries to invest in, despite it´s high taxes. the system creates innovation. it´s a kind of Keynesian mixed economy with high social security that gives its citizens room to pursue individual goals. it´s got very little to do with pure laissez faire (however you want to define it)... there´s a vibe you get from Rubin and his whole "I used to be left but but now I´ve left"-thing that just feels SO banal, childish and disingenuous. go listen to a bit of noam chomsky, compare and try to spot the difference between juvenile youtube-opportunism and intellectual thought based in an acquired depth of knowledge and honesty. this is like listening to children

Aron Flam has perfected the art of making an unpopular opinion sound enlightened and well read. People in Sweden take politics very seriously, and the majority of swedes are not ignorant to what problems we have in this country, we simply don't agree with what people like Aron Flam describes. It's arrogant to assume collectivism and political correctness blinds people from being critical. Integration of immigrants is a huge on-going debate in Sweden, and the Sweden Democrats (right-wing party) present next to no alleged solutions except for "ship them back to their ancestral/original countries and economic aid will surely do the trick" (simply described). Why would people in their right mind blame social democracy when our prosperity was built on that ideology and on the grounds of a welfare state? You shouldn't even have to consider yourself to be a social democrat to agree with the fact that that's true. Staying out of two wars and exporting arms only goes so far, but I suppose someone like Aron would try to come up with any explanation at all when your main goal is to blame socialism for crippling a country. I hope for his sake that his hollow arguments work on whoever listens to his podcast, because it must be strenuous to fight for relevance.

One more thing. There are many incorrect things said here, but the one that is especially egregious is the one on arms sale. There has always been debates about arms sales. Sweden probably has the hardest restrictions on arms sales of any nation. (The far left probably wants to ban all arms export, if not manufacturing.) They are not as strict anymore, because of the political right. The political right refused to call Saudi Arabia a dictatorship, because that would mean Sweden could not sell arms to it. And there was debate when America used Swedish arms against the Iraq. The strange and scary aspect of Sweden is that it has, at least in part, adopted the lazzes fair corruption of the USA, where everybody is looking for an angle. Sweden is following USA's lead. The ideological creep we see in the USA we see in Sweden. In the 1970s everybody in the USA was against torture and took such position for granted. Today half of the US population is pro torture. So, yes, for Sweden, who today is a complete postmodern nightmare of anything goes, just like the USA, to claim moral superiority today is a joke. If Sweden is not yet as morally corrupt as the USA, it is doing its best to catch up. What did you expect? Sweden, too, wants those Saudi billions that awaits anyone willing to whore himself.

As a politically progressive Swedish screenwriter who co-authored ” Svindlande Affärer ” with the late Janne ” Loffe” Carlsson, I want to compliment both the host and the guest for a highly informative discussion - as they say,, ” Hell is where the Swedes are the comedians!”.. What the guest says about how Sweden made money on both world wars is 100% true! I also remember when I was working as a biträndesjukvårdsassistent at the Karolinska Mental Ward, and my boss accused me of being a ” hashich liberal”- so I know what he is talking about. However, I regret to say he is being too polite: the bottom line os that Swedes hate foreigners..

Happily surprised to see Aron Flam here, really like that guy and his stand up material. I disagree with him on some fundamental political issues, but I don't hold that against him, I don't have much in common politically with most of my friends either so. I did receive a comment response from him once where he disagreed with me on nationalism, stating that it's foolish to be proud of something you have no control over (i.e. what country you were born in) and that's a common misconception, that every nationalist has to be proud of simply being born in a certain country. It's not about that for me, it's more about embracing your own culture and heritage and unite with your fellow countrymen more so than taking credit for what your ancestors have done or blind contempt for foreigners. Nationalism is about accepting that the human race is tribal in nature and we simply can't create a homogeneous culture with 8 billion people. This doesn't mean we ought to hate other cultures, do you hate every family except your own? Of course not, but you tend to favor your own family over others, it's natural.

The trouble with consensus is that nothing ever changes. It's the nature of humanity that most people stick to the norm and are change-averse. Innovation comes from individuals. If those individuals are held back by the collective, then progress is impossible. That's why the individualism of liberal capitalism beats socialism in every measurable way, every time.

Amazing amounts of whiners here. Aron Flam is actually a really funny comedian but his political views are clearly based on personal bitterness. Nothing wrong with a bit of libertarianism etc but look at western Europe, and the fact that ALL of the most successful countries there have social and economic policies rooted in socialism and it´s extremely successful compared to anything else. It´s not perfect but it is the best option at the moment. Compare it to the US, China etc and you´ll soon se that a socialistic, semi-capitalist democracy is the best way of running a government. And when he speaks about the Sweden Democrats he´s just plain wrong, they want to change a lot of things including limiting the freedom of the press, removing chiefs of police and replacing them with "loyalist" chiefs. They also voted against the lowering of taxes for pensioners and oppose high taxes on corporations. They are very right wing and highly overrepresented in terms of economical and violent crime, as usual with these sorts of parties. Aron Flam is as i said funny, but he is just a comedian and not in any way an authority on swedish policy and society.

Joakim Billtén This is sheer nonsense. I am from NL, a semi- capitalist democracy. Do you know what happens here? The middle class subsidizes the poor and the rich. And this is the same for many other European countries, including the Scandinavian countries. In the USA, you do not have to subsidize the poor, nor the rich. Much better if you ask me.

Dave! You should invite the Swedish journalist and author Maciej Zaremba to your show, if you want informed commentary about how Sweden actually works, from the inside. This could be useful given how the left in the US tends to use the Nordic countries as a positive example. Zaremba is of Polish-Jewish origin and has been a persistent critic of Swedish political and legal culture. Among other things, he is the journalist who broke the news about Nordic eugenic policies (1997). He actually used to be a democratic socialist activist when he was young, before turning more libertarian and conservative. Most important, I think he can tell you a lot about images of the Swedish model, and especially the image of Sweden as a putative world leader of modernity, lack of corruption and liberal democracy (if in doubt, you could run this by Aron).

It's really annoying hearing this as a Swede. Aron is obviously opposed to socialism and claiming that the rest of the Swedish people are in some sort of mass psychosis, not knowing anything else is laughable. He portraits himself as the one enlightened soul but that is not true at all. I would say that in general the Swedes are extremely political aware and we are following American politics almost more than our own and maybe that is why we do not completely want to go in that direction. If there is anything pushed in the mainstream it is libertarianism and it's been DECADES since the unions where strong in Sweden. It's sad that Dave isn't informed on the topics to properly question his claims. This is pure right-wing propaganda.
@slaskpost736

Strong argument there. To you question though, well the multicultural society works out great for me personally. I live in a so called "no-go Zone" and I really love it here. The fact that it's called that is straight out laughable. It's not at all dangerous (except if you ask right-wing propaganda spokesmen) and people from all cultures live in harmony with one another. I grew up in a completely Swedish neighborhood and I don't have any plans of going back to that. Of course some bad stuff will happen in an area with low socioeconomic status but its no different in terms of crime where I lived now and where I used to. And I'm pretty happy for all the people that can come here and live a good live, contribute to society and ensure a strong economic future for Sweden. Without the immigration Sweden would be nothing of what it is today. :)

Definition of propaganda: "Information used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view." Pretty much all news or entertainment content is propaganda of some sort. I like to call Dave Rubin's one-on-one interview style "explanatory propaganda." He doesn't claim to be doing a news report. The format just allows people to express their full opinion's in entirety. Considering most of his guests are maligned by the MSM, just allowing them to speak in long-form is a centrist position.

Aron's comment on the Swedes selling weapons to both sides in WW@ is quite true. A perfect example is the famous Oerlikon 20mm fully automatic cannon. Both the Poles, French, British, Spanish, Germans and even the U.S. Navy loved it. The Swedes got rich and were safe no matter who won. The Swedes were also selling iron to the Germans which made much of the Nazi war machine.
