Relaxing walk in small town Sweden! "By" meaning village is also common in place names in England that were originally Viking settlements. Wetherby, Corby, Selby, Derby, Rugby etc etc. I live in Devon in the far South West and you won't find any towns ending in "by" down here as the Vikings didnt settle this far South. Remnants of the Viking occupation of England still survive!
@fcomme57542 жыл бұрын
Thanks for explaining that. I didn't know.
@letswalkaroundstockholm2 жыл бұрын
Wow nice. I didnt know
@magnuspersson14332 жыл бұрын
The word "by" originally also meant "city" in Swedish, as it still does today in Danish and Norwegian. But in the Middle Ages Sweden had many immigrants from Germany and the Swedish contains many loanwords from German, such as "stad" (city) from the German "stadt". The same with swedish word for window, "fönster" (german fenster), which in Norwegian and Danish is called vindöje (the eye of the wind). I guess it's the same as the English window ... which may come from the ancient Vikings as well?
@fcomme57542 жыл бұрын
@@magnuspersson1433 Thanks. I love your word "vindöje" translated "the eye of the wind". Very poetic. "Window" sounds the same origin ? Can you explain me the meaning of "sson" at the end of many of your names ? Is it like "son" in English ?
@nooshiewest27022 жыл бұрын
@@fcomme5754 It is - just like Anderson, Johnson etc in English. It originated from the old Norse language as did a lot of English words and place names. Window definitely comes from Norse. I love that our word "queen" comes from "kvaen" and "cake" from "kaka" but there are literally hundreds of "English" words that came from the days of Viking settlement.

6:02 Hmmm, by the looks of the buildings, it seems Mother Russia got to Sweden first🤔 Hard to believe those apartments and the ones in central Stockholm were built in the same country: but, hey, at least the people are nice!😄 (I very much hope those flats are a work in progress lol) Edit: Yeah, some of the colourful houses towards the center were much nicer & if you do start doing food reviews (24:43), better make it a street food reviews "while I walk"-kind-of-deal; I don't think smaller businesses or like food trucks would mind it as much anyways, also including those hot dogs with the mashed potatoes that come from Göteborg is a must!😎 Thanks for all the whistle-stop tours you had done so far!🇸🇪

First I have to give "Let's walk around Stockholm" praise for your way of filming. You hold the camera in an exemplary way, quite still, you see the film just like when you walk by yourself. Very good! When it comes to Knivsta, it is not in Stockholm, very true. It is located in Uppsala County and the province of Uppland. The problem with understanding the division of Sweden is that county is a newer concept and landskap (province) the older one. Stockholm, for example, is located in both Uppland and Södermanland. The border goes at Slussen. So Södermalm for example is located in the province of Södermanland. This is because the provinces are very old, from the beginning they were their own countries with their own "king" and at that time Stockholm didn´t exist, which was founded later than many other Swedish cities.
@letswalkaroundstockholm2 жыл бұрын
Thanks , that is an excellent explanation of that situation. Awesome.
