Host Rev. Cory Bradford-Watts interviews artist, poet, and Swedenborgian Eleanor Schnarr about eighteenth-century scientist and mystic Emanuel Swedenborg’s early explorations of the human brain and breath control and how his findings influenced his later works on spiritual anatomy. As a student of Swedenborgian Studies at the Graduate Theological Union, Eleanor has written several fascinating papers about Swedenborg’s practice of internal breathing and how it compares to other ancient meditative forms such as tantra and yoga. Eleanor draws on her extensive research to explain how Swedenborg used meditative breathing to access the spiritual world and how we can also experience divine consciousness.

★THE HOST★
Rev. Cory Bradford-Watts is an ordained minister with the Swedenborgian Church of North America and a member of the Swedenborg Foundation board of directors. His current ministry includes leading and officiating the Swedenborgian Online Community-an affirming interfaith group that meets weekly to grow in love and wisdom online. Cory was exposed to many different religious traditions growing up, but he had little personal belief in divinity. Then, after experiencing a mystical near-death experience as a young adult, he started to sense the spiritual qualities of life and developed a belief in the Creator. He eventually found himself drawn to the pluralistic, Christian nature of Swedenborgianism, and he answered the call to uplift others wherever they’re at, no matter their creed or culture.

I think swedenborg is talking about conjugial relationship between left brain & right brain. Whereas the cerebrum rises upward & gives a blossomed feeling. Loved this interview ❤️ hope to see my friend Eleanor being interviewed for more such neurological swedenborgianism. ❤️

Great discussion btw. There are entire arts where breathing is the focus and I am not talking about yoga but the Buddhist temple and the martial arts. That field, the martial arts, is where most of the functional breathing exercises went, and where it gets very technical as a marriage between movement, body and breath is sought. Personally I think there one can find or even put together a really good syllabus to engender and feel those connections. Like most things, easy to learn but a lifetime to master if at all. Twenty years in for me and yes, those 'ecstasy' and 'bliss' moments are there but they are different from samadhi (the term Swedenborg is alluding to and the term used by some in the Buddhist breathing arts to name that state) and where the breath is held and that 'near death' occurs. It is not recommended to train that and to bring it on, it can be very dangerous and even for advanced practitioners under expert guidance. Great stuff Eleanor, very excited to now read up pending present writing commitments! And thanks, Cory, for yet another veritable gold mine!

Sorry for the secondary comments, more stuff just springs up as I go back and watch bits again because it is information heavy. The system of exercises I am alluding too has, at the more advanced levels, exercises that are done in pairs, a marriage if you will where both are in contact and move. Together that marriage between the breath, body and movement (and 'energy' as some others also add), is sought by both as a pair in movement. Levels open up there.

@37:18 is a great theory that Love & Wisdom are manifest 'to the dendrite', and the 'ion' - and probably even on the sub-atomic level.

When we look back into history recorded with accuracy (not history filtered through the eyes of propaganda and political puppetry) in all its ways we should observe and know that hell in all its forms was menacing destruction we did not live, but certainly can learn by it that we do not want to invite it back. Then, we should examine our own lives and again as we live it. How are we interacting and treating others while driving on the highway, walking the dog, answering the phone, visiting a restaurant, etc. How are we behaving, thinking, speaking especially when under stress? Do we allow politics to give us permission to disregard opinions of others? We cannot judge the past of others who lived before us because we did not live their lives. Still, we can discern evil in history and today expressed through ourselves and others and examine ourselves and do work that is necessary to make kindness and goodness, truth, understanding the criteria we use to navigate our souls while in the body.

Do you either of you know of the work of the Heart Math Institute, or Gregg Braden in regards to Heart Brain Coherence . It involves techniques to use your breath and love to achieve coherence between heart and mind. It is developed from leading edge peer reviewed science.
