I love the questions. So, the band travels to EVERY football game, not just home games. The performances change every week, this is for the dancers as well. Performances also expand to pre-game pep rallies, pre-game shows, post game shows, special appearances (including performances for Presidents), battle of the bands, and for many schools, basketball season as well. To be honest, most people come to the games to see the bands, LOL. These kids put in countless hours practicing in addition to schoolwork and a little free time. Such hard work. The thing that drives us is a certain sense of pride in knowing we are giving you our very best in innovation, creativity, and show. And this applies to EVERY HBCU marching band; that's what makes them so great!!! Honestly, performing was the highlight of my undergraduate days.....the degree was great too!

HBCU marching bands have long connected Black communities to their history, rooted in America's past of segregation at the university level. Today, while students can attend any school they qualify for, HBCUs continue to honor this legacy. These bands have generations of fans, traveling nationwide for football events, parades like the Rose Bowl and Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and even international tours. They represent a true sense of pride and joy among students pursuing degrees and professional careers, all while entertaining the masses.

As a former high school marching band trumpet player, I LOVE watching your reaction to these marching band videos. You asked, what is the appeal or motivation for doing this... I can only speak for myself, but my primary motivation was social. I was the ONLY girl trumpet player at my high school, and I loved playing with the boys. While I was enjoying the social aspects of it, I also learned to read and appreciate music, I got some good exercise, and I was able to travel all around the state as we played each week in the fall. I also enjoyed watching the football games free of charge each week---especially since my team was undefeated all 3 years I was in high school. Being in the band gave me a sense of belonging, and now, 50 years later, I STILL appreciate the community I experienced as a band member.

Hello I loved your reactions to Southern University(SU), we are in the same football conference witch is the South West Athletic Conference(SWAC). My name is Mario, and I attended the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff 1st Trombone 1999-2002. The best way to explain "MARCHING BAND" is its a way of life. The Drive in us comes from: The love of music, The love of your instrument, Performing to the best of your abilities on and off the field, The rivalries and you get to travel. Most of us started from middle school, on to high school then to college. Yes, you can get a scholarship but I'll break down what that comes with. Starts with band camp, a month before school starts so long days and nights. Condition training, Learning and memorizing the old and new music "The Book," drill or field show, and dance routines. At a game both bands perform normally 5 to 8 minutes, home and away games. If it's a classic game you get to perform a little longer with out penalizing your football team after half time. A lot of people go to the games just for the bands, and we make sure that we put on the bestest show to keeping it Funky and Groovy at all times.🎶🎵

The band is world renowned (they travel internationally) and also known for marching the pattern of the half time score, no matter the numbers (when winning of course). I was hoping they would do that here but you can catch them doing it in other videos. I’ve never seen another band capable of this. Love you guys, and thanks for showing so much respect to our beloved black culture! Former member of the Human Jukebox here. There are many layers, but 1st thing you need is the “want to” when it comes to being there. There are a lot of important things that will help you maintain your position, and keep you going in your journey. But, you have to 100% want to be there, first and foremost, and want to contribute to whichever program you’re in.
@LMmccallL572 ай бұрын
The bands travel with the football teams and play at home, and at away games in the other school's stadium. When bands play away from home, they're known as "the guests" or "visiting band" and will perform first during halftime, and then the home team will perform. If you ever dance a particular style like a line dance, (The Electric Slide) you have the steps memorized and know where and when to the music without thinking about it. Band is pretty much the same. When I was in high school, I was a section leader of the band, which meant I was in charge of keeping my fellow clarinet plays in check. It's somewhat similar to being a military Sargent, while those I'm in charge of are similar to privates. They had to do what I said when it came to the band, I could make them stand at attention, keep quiet, run laps, (if they were being disruptive) comment on and report anything improper about their uniform, and more. There were times when my fellow members didn't want to take me seriously because we were friends, but I was tough on them, and when they didn't like it and got angry, it didn't hurt my feelings. I was there to do well. One of my best friends was co-secrion leader, but was always afraid to speak up, didn't the others get upset with her, so she was always slacking off and allowing them to do the same. Our director told me to tell her, she was no longer a leader and to get back into her spot in line, and stay there. He asked if I had a problem with telling that to a friend, and I said I didn't, because she was getting on my nerves and I wanted our section and band to to well. I told her and she stayed angry at me for at least a week, as if I wasn't supposed to do as I was told. It didn't bother me. I was proud to be a leader, and taking it seriously worked for me. There was a section leader for each type of instrument, the flag color guard (twirlers of wooden rifles, flags, swords, etc.) majorettes; those who perform with or without twirling batons. The drum major was ranked higher than section leaders, so we answered to them,and the band directors/teacher who put everything togethers, were the highest ranked that we all answered to. Whenever at a game, the section leaders of the home band/team had to go and greet the leaders of the visiting team. We always dreaded going to our biggest rival, and they weren't happy to talk to us, either. That particular school had a lot of rowdy kids, their band wasn't good, it was much smaller than ours, and they couldn't stand the fact that our band was the most popular and won with high scores at competitions.

Enjoyed your reaction video... As a former marching band member in the HBCU community all I can say is the HBCU marching band community is off the chain. Keep watching more videos, more different HBCU marching bands...It's a excellent vibe. Very exciting... Thank you much
