It’s really worth having jewelry that you find in your grandma’s belongings appraised, even if you think it’s just costume jewelry. I come from a lower-middle-class family but I was shocked at how much the random jewelry in my Grandma’s jewelry box fetched through consignment.

I’m currently having to clear out my Mum’s bungalow, & I’ve had to travel halfway round the world to do it. Thankfully I have my husband with me plus my sister & her husband who live here. My son will join us for a time too. Not only are we clearing it, but we are living amidst all the mess as well, and trying to keep up with other overseas work and obligations and care for Mum. We already cleared our parents’ large house 7 years ago when our Dad died, and now here we are again. Mum is now in a nursing home and needs few possessions, but we are sorting through a lifetime of clutter. We are all emotional wrecks! I searched for videos to give me some comfort on a sleepless night, and yours is so beautiful, warm and professional compared with many other KZbinrs attempting to do a similar thing.

❤you have my sympathy. I have finished ,with help, emptying a 2 bedroom house plus sheds, of a gentleman now in dementia care. He is my good friend. 30 years of friendship and arguments. It's taken a month. He kept EVERYTHING, including very old receipts from years back. I'm exhausted, traumatised and grieving, though he's not yet dead.

I’ve been working on this for a long time with you. I talked to my son and his wife as well as close relatives and found some things to give to family. Mostly items were donated or tossed . Now we are moving to a retirement community and it is so much easier to get ready. Thank you for hints and advise you have provided on this journey ❤

My mother passed 2 years ago for lung cancer. After 2 years, recently I and my father could start decluttering her things, like cloths and lots lots of kitchen stuff... furniture's, linens... I think it will be a long time process(my not married twin sister insists keep then all not throwing away... ㅠ ㅠ, she still has not recovered from the shock of losing our mom emotionally... have been denied all this situaion) but my father needs to downsize the house and also Swedish cleaning because he is 73 years old and wants to live in tidy and neat home. If I had had this kind of opportunity decluttering home with my mom like you before my mom's dying... I pray your mom live long long healthy and stay with you having good time with you. It's so good to see a mom and daughter together decluttering(my favorite)

@@laneyj3642 I never had a lot of stuff, but after my parents passed my siblings and I had to go through the house discarding there belongings, we were all married and had our own things so it was heartbreaking that we couldn’t not keep 98% of their things, never mind the work involved , I promised my kids would never have to deal with that. I just went thru each drawer, closet, etc and if I didn’t need it, love it, I donated .. My house feels so great, I have extra room in closets, drawers, it’s neat, peaceful.. the biggest way is the way I shop now, I never overbuy, I save money, a lot of money..I narrowed holiday decor to one rubber made container for fall and Christmas, my attic is so spacious now, and what’s up there I use… I donated my large tree, and opted for a small one, easier for my husband too… of course we’re retired, so we don’t have children here, my granddaughter is 19… I can’t explain it more then the peace I have, knowing my children won’t be overburdened one day, and when people visit me they always say they feel a sense of peace… I hope this helps

I have been simplifying our home for several years, and have a capsule wardrobe. We are putting our farm on the market this month, so had a big push to finish this process and spring clean the farmhouse. We are only in our 50s, but early retirement will enable us to focus on our hobbies/interests and travel (and thinking about possible income creation at home or in our new community - we are moving closer to family). It just makes sense to live without the friction of clutter

I enjoyed this refresher. I just moved and have decluttered much this last summer, 2 weeks in June and all of July. I used your mom’s positive attitude to guide me. My youngest son and daughter in law have been there to help n guide me but Not Push. I actually met a person that got out of an abused situation and I had enough kitchen dishes, pots n pan gadgets etc to set her kitchen up. She liked my beach theme so I shared ocean pics, I had a queen size new sheet set, blanket n towels all new to share with this lady. I was fortune enough to help her and pulled much out of my home. Thanks Shannon n Kathi for your positive power cleaning out🎉

I heard about Swedish Death Cleaning on your channel. I immediately subscribed and purchased Margareta Magnusson’s book. The book and your content have been so helpful! My mother recently passed away and I was burdened with going through her possessions. She was a collector… I do not want the same experience for my kids. This segment at 45:18 about photos is a God send! I too have photos from my great great grandparents. My children (22, 24 & 27 years old) do not want these. I love the dynamic between you and your mom. It reminds me of how my mom and I interacted while working together. Lots of laughter and silliness sprinkled throughout. Thanks for your content! It’s helpful and fun!

So proud of your mom/Cathy ! The reward is more camping. I did a combo of KonMari and Swedish, having no idea that is what I was doing. Then I came upon Project 333 and it has made my life so simple, but also surrounded me by the true things that bring me joy. Holding on to everyone else's "stuff" I realized I wasn't just an "old soul" but the keeper of family history. So much of my "treasures" were farmed out to relatives that truly wanted them. I also wrote a note about the history, the significance or occasional funny stories. My daughter is a minimalist, but appreciates the possibility of repurposing family furniture ( Iron bed & steam chest) And a cousin has decided to take a church pew that was milled by his grandpa ( he also had talks on that pew about "life" so it's sentimental to him) THANK YOU SHANNON & CATHY FOR ENTERTAINING US, while also educating on what really matters. Hugs to you both ! Can't wait to see more camping memories.

Cathy, you’re making me very happy that my Mom didn’t collect any kind of knickknacks (which she called dust catchers). And because I didn’t grow up with them, I don’t have any either, except for a few little ones that my daughter gave me years ago. Nevertheless, I certainly do admire how many of yours you are letting go. Great work! And it’s always fun watching the two of you working together in each other’s homes!

Really enjoyed this video and the healthy relationship you have with your mom. Im 50 and started this process 5 years ago towards minimalism after dad passed and I was left overwhelmed with the process of doing this with his 40 year old business that was extremely packed. You’re lucky your mom is receptive to this idea and can laugh during the process. My mom is a hoarder (think show) beginning with empty nest syndrome. In the beginning of this process it was very contentious and volatile. It has taken a few years and at a snails pace but this year shes finally letting things go and progress is being made. She still buys too much but has reduced her purchases compounded by a steady place of decluttering means improvement. Just wish the process was as happy bonding as your experience. You will cherish this video with your mom in the years to come.

I always enjoy your videos so much, Shannon. They are very inspiring and leave me with a good feeling. In reality, Swedish death cleaning started generations ago. I helped my Swedish grandmother do her cleaning back in the 1960s when I was a teenager. The concept did “grow legs“ after books were published a few years ago. ❤ I have recently learned a new incentive for getting rid of things - selling your house and moving across country! I am getting rid of stuff that I have not used in years. People used to say if you want to be motivated to clean your house, you should pretend that you’re having a party the next day. Maybe you should pretend that you’re moving! 😅

Great job on the video and the changes in your parent's home! I appreciate the compilation of videos that really show how the process stacks up over time. I have done some decluttering with my mom, but I have backed off because I think I went a bit too hard at first. I hadn't thought of her feeling "threatened" and protective at the time. However, she has since called me when she has done some on her own. About a month ago she actually asked me to help her with a few things. I am trying to let her initiate the process. This video is encouraging - thank you!

I watched this whole thing even though I’ve already seen all the videos. You can’t have too much inspiration. I paused this video at least twice to get up and declutter. I decluttered all my towels. I have two towels that are going to a relative because they’re her color scheme and I have a bag full of towels that are going to either the groomer or the animal shelter, I don’t need dog towels anymore because I don’t have a dog and I already have a car towel for the car wash in my car. I got all that done while watching you and pausing it. I can’t do something and watch a video at the same time. I have to pause it because I can’t concentrate on two things at once.

You need to take it slow. Small steps at 85. Managed to cause 3 compound fractures lifting stored items. START EARLY CHOOSE precious things first that you want to keep/give/offer to family and then work from there. It is an mixed emotional journey... helpful when it is over.

I’m going through this process at 54. We’ve just downsized our home and I simply can’t fit everything in, nor do I want to. I actually thought I had decluttered enough before the move but our large home with so many extra rooms fooled me into thinking we didn’t have extra stuff. Perspective is everything. 🥴

Shannon, I’m not sure that I’ve ever commented before but I have to say that you always have either a pretty top on or a pretty patterned dress. Lovely!

My inlaws never decluttered a day in their lives. They lived on a farm with multiple buildings and sure enough, they packed them full of stuff from auctions and who knows where all else! So now, with both of them gone, it's up to the kids to get it all cleaned up so they can sell the farm for the inheritance they were promised. It looks to be a very long road ahead.

I hope you feel grateful that they left this property for you.

@@pearl9831 The property was supposed to have been sold in the near future, or even by now. The way things are looking right now, there is no "near future", so hubby and I are highly doubting we'll even get an inheritance. The brother that still lives there is ....get this.... also a hoarder. The cycle doesn't stop. It always continues.

Shannon, frame your paintings and put them on a local art show. They are very good. I love the horse! 😊

Fung vlog. I started on Swedish death cleaning on my memory stuff a few years back... i need to do another go at it.. planned in Autumn. My mum spent covid lockdown doing ancestry. When they were allowed a bit in 2021 the visited houses and graveyards of family. She has done family trees etc.. then sends us photo copies of the originals to look at. Its been great. She has gone back hundeds of years for some sides of the family. You are so wonderful. My mum is a maximalist and boarder horder "just in case"... its a nightmare.. I dread when they have to downsize or die because I live abroad.. so it will be SO STRESSFUL to deal with.

My Mom was such a collector. I’m so not a collector but my sister is. Stuff, even if it’s organized drives me crazy.
