My suggestions: Make memory boxes for everyone in your household. When the kids are adults, give them their boxes for them to go through. Some items that are really important to YOU, use or display them rather than hide them in a box. From years of decluttering, I have learned that something that is important and kept at one period in my life might not mean much to me 5 years later. It is definitely a journey!

This will get easier as you get older. I’m 68 and don’t plan on passing for a long time. I’m trying to making life easier for my family after I’m gone. My sister kept her daughters cords in their baby books. They still laugh that one lost their cord a few days before the other. The oldest daughter turned 60 yesterday. She also kept a lock of hair. I’m going through pictures and tossing out scenery & animals at the zoo, blurry pictures. I have to be in the right mood to declutter. I wish you luck with decluttering. You can do it.

OMG the cords.. I feel that. As a mother I kept my kids teeths. But I have been decluttering and decided to give it to them and guess what.. they tossed it right away🥺🥺😂😂 I felt sad but relieved that they made the decision for me. So now I just throw anything and not be all sentimental. I rather keep memories than stuff😊

My mom glued my baby cards inside the front and back covers of my baby book. she must have just picked out the ones from those closest to us. She glued the backs of the cards to the covers so you could open them and read them. I always thought that was a clever idea😊

This was great. I've downstreamed my cards. We used to decorate with Christmas cards, displaying in rows on the shelves of the living room bookcases. One year I went through them and just kept one from each family member. They have all passed away, but I enjoy a seeing their handwriting once a year, and it's only about 20 cards. I've been thinking on this series of your's seriously. I'm in my 60s now, never married, no kids, and an only child. My cousins or their children will have the chore of empting my house. I've been putting notes on things i.e. Grandmom's silver sugar bowl, so family understands the sentiment. Same with pictures. It's hard for sure. You want to hope someone will treasure as you have.

Keep a few of the cards that have personalized messages; especially from deceased relatives. Enjoy the items of your grandmother by displaying or using them. Donate any clothing items; the donation center will recycle if it’s not sellable. You are doing the best you can and that’s all you can ask of yourself.

Hi Dani, I waited until my kids were at least in college before I asked them to go through their childhood things with me. It’s a lot easier in my opinion on all of us. I used to bring things out occasionally and show them and that was fun while they were young. When we went through the stuff at last they just wanted us to hang onto it! At that point it was we will hold it until you move out or get married. That’s when they had to take it to their homes! Good luck decluttering. For the sentimental things I would wait.

Wow...these videos have come into my life at the perfect time. God's saving grace has reached me and I am now looking at life in a whole new way! First off, I have seen myself as the sinner I am and have repented of my sins and accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior! I am born again and feel free! Now I am looking to bring about change and order into all parts of my life including my home. This system of cleaning is helping me stay focused on what really matters and I'm excited to start living free of the clutter that has been weighing me down! Thank you for sharing your experience! ♥ Jenny

Hey Danni! I used to work at a thrift store. When in doubt, donate anything that's in good condition. Employees sort through everything in the back. We sold handmade stuff all the time. Ask your local thrift store if they send clothing they can't sell off to be recycled. That's what we did. Hope that helps! ❤

Great job tackling a challenging memory box!! I have a bin full of cards that I’ve kept over the years in my closet with a post it note on it that reads: “Sort through on a rainy day” 😂😂 I really want to do that soon. 😅 I’m 53 years old and kept a bunch of things from our 3 kids… some things they were glad I kept but I’d say 85% of what I saved for years, they didn’t want. The two boys aren’t sentimental so there’s that. In reality, the items meant more to me because of the memories attached. They were too little to remember. So, tuck that away in the back of your head when saving things. ❤ My daughter especially cherishes books that she loved when she was little. 🌺 I realize now that I’m way more emotionally attached to things than my kids are. Lesson learned. Now, to go sort through my cards… 😂😂😂 Thanks as always for sharing! Blessings! 🩷

It's okay for you to keep things that are really special to you. A couple of years before my mother passed away, she decluttered a lot of sentimental things, but she did keep some birthday cards that her children gave to her because she enjoyed reading them now and then because of all the loving words in the cards. When she passed away, her children read the cards knowing how much they meant to Mom. There are some items I have which I won't ever declutter because I display them in my home, and they bring me joy. You are such a sweet person who has love in your heart for those around you!

Now pictures of themselves they want lol! I've only kept a few things that were both my grandmother's, they're over or close to 100 years old! You have inspired me Danni I just went thru jewelry and got rid of a lot but need to do it again later.. I would keep the book where your voice is recorded!

Hi Danni! Last week you suggested I box up my 40 book collection and I put them in a maybe bin for now. I didn't put a date on them just to keep pressure off. I was thinking that when you were debating on your grandmother's pieces just put them in a maybe bin till later. I've read the book too and it's great but since you're not in the winter of your life perhaps it's too soon. But at the end of your video you really did figure it out! So proud of you. When I did our cards I separated them by person who sent them then just kept one or two and let go of the rest. You and Ian are in my prayers still I'm so concerned for you guys. It's funny how a person can love someone even though they've never met them. You can lift up a prayer for me, yesterday on my way into the store I guess I decided I needed to check out their pavement a bit closer so came to face down and bleeding and had a lovely little ride in an ambulance!🤪 Told them I forgot to remove my Halloween mask! Bruised and cut face with some of my inside cheek missing and concussion. Believe me there's no need for a close up inspection of pavement!!! LOL! Anyway I'll be fine. Minimal mom talks about second hand sentimental items...Zoey ( hope I spelled that right) most likely will be more interested in things you valued and loved over something she never witnessed grandmother loving and using. Well I wrote the book this week! Take care and can't wait for next video🥰

I have a bin for each of my kids, that's the limit, as they keep more things and get older, they can decide what they want to keep or get rid of. For myself, I only kept a shoe box size of sentimental papers, the rest either got shredded or I scanned them to store on the computer. HS photos, certificates, cards, letters, I even scanned a HS wool Varsity letter. Then I got rid of it once scanned. I had two rubbermaid bins full! Feels great to have it delt with. Good job Danielle🎉

Well done i am proud of you for persevering 🎉After having had 4 heart ablations over the last 6 years i am thankful to have the opportunity to do the same step by step I am 66 years young so i have been able to learn what my children are interested in and a lot of things have been passed on already which has been a Joy both to them and me 😊 My mother was a hoarder and when she passed away it took a load of hard work to deal with all there was left and when we finally cleared it all it made me determined not to end up the same way and put my children through this My mother would give her love and her time and was a very precious lady but her stuff was having such a hold on her sadly and hindered her in so many ways I have been on my own journey for a several years now and am really starting to reap the benefits and am enjoying it but Sentimental stuff i do in stages and revisit occasionally and each time find myself purging some more Keep doing what your doing and as always i enjoy sharing in your journey Big hug from a Frisian 🐄lady living in the UK X

I am sending you lots of love thoughts and prayers friend 🙏❤️🙏 I hope you are okay and doing well. I'm so sorry for your loss, I cannot even begin to imagine how difficult that must be, sending more love thoughts and prayers 🙏❤️ my parents have a lot of stuff, even after helping them declutter for a year, they have a very difficult time letting anything go, although my mom and I have removed a ton of stuff throughout our decluttering series, im very proud of her and my dad but I totally understand where your coming from. My parents things have a hold on them as well and I think it's partly because they've had this stuff for so long and partly because it's a security, it's a safety to have things to have options and choices with our belongings. I think what you and I are doing is amazing, because we're relieving the burden of stuff off of our loved ones. I really truly believe it's such a selfless way to declutter. I'm at a point in my journey where it's much easier for me to part with things and that's exactly how I view it "there just things" but sentimental stuff is so dang hard, it's definitely a process. I think that how your decluttering is the best way to do it... decluttering in stages, esp. with sentimental items, that's a GREAT way to handle these types of items! I have to do that, I have to take a break from sentimental stuff for a bit, it's so emotional. Thank you so much for watching, commenting and being here with me friend, I'm so grateful your on this journey with me. Lots of luv from MN 🥰😘

My daughter took pictures of all the children’s artwork. Then she made each child a 12x12 photo book filled with all the pictures along with sports photos, classmate photo etc. There may be 6, 9 or 12 on a page. They will pick up the book and look through it but they never would look through a tub in the basement . Brilliant!

I kept the umbilical cords and teeth for my boys until just a couple of years ago. They are in their 20s and they helped me go through their memory boxes and they boys were grossed out and didn't want those things. I'd kept them for 20 years. 😂. If they didn't want them I was ok tossing them.

Danni, You did so well with decluttering in the difficult area of sentimental items. So proud of you for hanging in there and completing the process, as it is so easy to give up when we get overwhelmed and caught up in replaying our emotions, especially with regards to people who have passed away. As someone who had to go through all the personal stuff my mum had kept for me when she passed a year ago, I can say you are definitely doing the right thing by keeping only the most significant and sentimental items. I had so much stuff to go through it completely flawed me and it wasn’t the nice experience it should have been, rather it was so overwhelming I felt dismayed and swamped by the process. Now having done what my mum should have done and decluttered most of the items, only keeping the really important stuff, I can now feel joy in looking back over what’s left and feel my mum’s love and the pleasure of the memories.

I recently went through my sentimental stuff for probably the 100th time in my adulthood and I did toss a few things but what I think about when it comes to those things is it's okay to revisit the decluttering process multiple times. I think it's okay to take some time to go down memory lane, I mean what is the point of keeping any of it if we are not going to look at them and think of the memories? But each time I do go down memory lane, I will make the choice to let go of a few things because after looking at them so many times, I realize that some things are just not as important or necessary. By now I have maybe 3 small boxes of sentimental items and I don't think I need to get rid of much more. In a few months I will go through them again and see if there will be any more items I am good with letting go.

Totally agree, and I also agree that the decluttering process is different for everyone, sometimes it does take a couple...or more lol...declutters before meeting your decluttering goals. This is so true! And that is absolutely amazing that your down to 3 small boxes, high five! Its not easy going through your stuff esp. sentimental stuff so you should be so proud. I have a little more sentimental items to get through, but honestly I have to take a small break, emotionally im drained LOL. LOVE this comment! @@danniraearranged I'm glad you agree :) I think sentimental items are the one element in the decluttering process that it's okay if we bend or break the "rules" a little bit. I mean yeah we don't need a bunch of clothes or toys or decorations or stuff in the kitchen but sentimental items have actual meaning for us so we really need to take our time with them. Great job on tackling this and definitely take your time and revisit the sentimental items again in the future. Happy to be here as always :)

The hair color might have been for Halloween, but it looks amazing! Rock that color! Aw, cute family baby pics. This process of cleaning, just like any cleaning, can't be a "I did it and now it's done" thing. No one, NO ONE can do this and it be "done". Do it, knowing that in 5 years it'll be time to do it again. Things you are absolutely sure are a keeper today may be perfectly fine to let go of in the future. It has to be revisited to work. Ok, on those talking books. I'm putting on my AV hat here. Please record them the best way you can so that you don't lose the audio. That way you won't be hurt if something happens to the electronics in the book over time. The 1981 pic - That picture even has a Minnesota accent. They are adorable. Ma'am. MA'AM. Please rethink that umbilical cord thing. If it's for you, fine. If you're keeping it for the kids, I think they are going to be grossed out. It can't perform any other function, unless you want it as a chip clip conversation starter. As someone who has cleaned out an estate, finding gold fillings with the pulled teeth still attached and various lengths of hair trimmings, items having to do with body parts aren't fun surprises. I found my braids from the 3rd grade. Each one over a foot, together in a jar. It makes you jump to find that kind of thing. Look at how great of a job you did on that box. It was hard, but you did it! Go you!!!

Hi Danni. Great job on tackling your hardest sentimental items!! I’ve been enjoying your channel for awhile now. Love the videos where you and your mom are cracking each other up! They make me smile too. I helped my sister sort and declutter her (large) collection of sentimental items about a year and a half ago. While I provided some coaching and helped her in the “stuck” moments, I think my presence during the process provided the most support and allowed her to power through in a marathon purge. When we came across her son’s (used) cast from a broken bone in elementary school and she was conflicted about whether to save or toss, I looked her in the eyes told her, “that’s medical waste.” That was all she needed to hear and in the trash the (smelly) cast went. It’s tempting - understandably so - to keep certain items from our children’s births. I mean, it’s one of the most sacred experiences of our lives. But it’s important to remember that some things have already served their purpose and really aren’t providing any more value. And, some other things might just be pseudo-sentimental items… like, we feel like we’re supposed to feel some type of way about it because it belonged to so and so (which causes us to feel like we can’t or shouldn’t part with it), but in reality, it doesn’t mean all that much to us. Objects are really only as valuable as we as individuals assign meaning to them, and that meaning isn’t fully transferable. And if our most “sentimental” items live in a tote only to see the light of day once a decade, is it really that sentimental, or do we just feel like it’s supposed to be?

With some of your grandmothers things, I don’t think anyone else will want it unless you had it displayed in your home and they have attached you to that item as well (I hope that makes sense!)

I have multiple boxes that size for each of my four kids plus my niece. Not to mention an entire walk in closet of toys of my own from when I was little. Two whole walls of my garage plus an attic and tons of space in my library are all sentimental stuff. I am at the point to get rid of it but now my husband is trying to stop me. I have no idea why 🤦🏽‍♀️

Oh wow! This reminds me so much of when I lived in our last house, I had walls in the garage covered with stuff, I had soooo much sentimental stuff in our basement, I totally understand where your coming from! I also had a walk in closet in our old house, I miss that closet LOL but I jam packed it. I still have some more sentimental stuff but Im getting there, I think I need to take a little break though LOL. And your husband reminds me so much of my husband, Ian has a more difficult time letting go of things, so I have to go a little slower with the decluttering process, he also has a bad habit of excepting free stuff, he still does it LOL. You got this!!! We're gonna get through it! I am so grateful you are on this journey with me friend! Always so happy to see you here with me! Hugs 🥰😘

There is a reason this method is for old people. Your children and grandchildren are adults. I would take this method less seriously at your age, when you have no idea what your adult children will be like or want. You made wise choices. I ended up getting rid of all cards and papers. The older your kids get it just becomes too much. Sadly, I got rid of the hand written stories my dad sent my kids when they were away. I regret that, but by that time my kids were teenagers and I was buried alive in cards. I hit the wall and it all went. I’m sure my sons would love to see those old letters again but that’s like crying over spilt milk.. I needed to end up with my sanity. Don’t assume that because you have a son that he want anything from your family or your grandma. I have a tea pot collection, and I have my grandmothers tea pot, my mothers tea pot, my mother-in-law‘s tea pot, and my own from when I first got married 56 years ago.. I treasure a lot of the things I got from Bob’s mom. And that little dish from your grandma the metal one could hold a really cute little flower arrangement.. if you like the look of it, tarnished that keep it that way because maybe you don’t like bright, shiny metals. I never held onto any clothes except their baptism outfits because we were always having garage sales and the kids clothes go so good.. and really that is one thing I don’t think they would’ve had any interest in.. I have my husband’s baptism dress that my younger son wore also because they were both born in July. I have a cedar chest, which I know it’s old-fashioned, but that’s where some of the precious garments are like the Norwegian mittens my mother, hand knit, and the sweater I knit for Bob. I while I know I need to D clutter a crap ton of stuff., the family things will never be the first to go because there is a whole other generation coming up behind me that will have different values and different likes. I think that’s the value of having this cleaning method when you are old and able to see the future that you will not necessarily be a part of..

This actually inspired me to go through ALL of the greeting cards I've saved and do the Artkive Cards book with them. I realize that digital clutter is still clutter, but it's a hell of a lot easier for you to pass a USB stick or an online photo album to someone, rather than a stack of mouldering cards. When in doubt, I always donated items I didn't love to that future, unknown someone that would love it a hell of a lot more than I ever did.

I'm convinced I've got PSTD I'm not joking, after clearing my in laws home and my Dad's all alone! I never want my 2 sons to go through that. My Dad was 94 when he died and kept EVERY bill from the day he got married for furniture electrics etc! He had loads of hobbies, reading = he kept all his books, he painted = he had all his oil paints easel and paintings, he researched Roman roads so had tons maps and loads Roman pottery. He also wrote 3 books = he had all 3 manuscripts! I'm stressed out remembering it. I've still got his paintings which are very good but not my style but I feel 'obliged' to keep them 😢

It’s amazing how much stuff people accumulate without even realizing it. You are on top of it imagine what people have just stuck in closets, drawers, cabinets etc. and they don’t even know they have that stuff. I see on KZbin all these people doing Dollar Tree Hauls and I just wonder what are they doing with all that stuff. They can’t possibly be using all of that and they buying it just to show on their KZbin channel. It honestly makes me think what their house might look like because all this stuff has to go somewhere. Thanks for another amazing video Danielle, hugs from southwest Florida. 🌴🌴🌴

If someone just signed a card, then it's something I can toss, thankfully the norm. But if they wrote a message to me it's harder... I have a small stack of cards with short messages from my grandparents who have all passed now that I haven't been able to let go of.

Hi, Danni! I say 115 cards! I know what you’re saying about all those cards. I too had lots of cards and finally scaled it down to signatures I want to keep and special ones to keep. Now I don’t even keep birthday cards anymore. Now cards are virtual and you don’t waste paper. Love seeing your old photos! Today my daughter came over and loaded up my car so I could take a large donation to Goodwill. Such a great feeling to clear it out. How did Ian’s doctor appointment go? I hope well. Hugs to all! Your friend from Michigan!🥰👍💜🍁🍁🍁

Definitely keep the voice books on the empty shelves. Think about and listen to them on Birthdays, Christmas. Just know one day the voice won't be there. It has a limited shelf life, but better where you can visit them thansome box somewhere.

Do you have memory boxes for everyone? I think it would help if you separated the stuff into your special stuff and a box for each of your children. We have about four boxes each at the moment which I’d like to cut down on but each person gets to decide what is special enough to keep. Hubby has old school and uni stuff, I have photos toys and wedding dress.

I dont, not yet, but I think the memory boxes are such a GREAT idea! Im currently looking at some memory boxes, preferably ones that aren't too, too big LMBO. But I do need them esp. for the kids, I didnt even think to make one for Ian and I, I'll be making ones for Ian and I too, I think it would help a lot to get everything organized for everyone, create permanent homes for everyone's keepsake items. Thank you so much for watching & being here with me friend! I appreciate ya so much 🥰

The only items that I wanted from my grandmother’s passing was items that I had memories of with her. Your daughter won’t have memories of those items unless you use them or display them and talk about them/her with those items. If they aren’t special enough to be used or displayed then you can probably just get rid of it. My boys have similar memories of the items I kept. We use the items almost daily. This isn’t meant to be harsh at all. Sentimental items are so stinking hard to get rid of. Also, please put those books that she read out somewhere where you all can listen to the often. Those are so wonderful! 😍🥹

I had a lot of items from my kids in a storage bin. I went through and found some really cute artwork they made while at home or school. I framed one from each child. My oldest now has a daughter, and i am giving her picture back framed. I also had put their artwork in photo albums between pages. It is really hard to rid the physical pictures, because they cannot be replaced. That will take time to do. Nowadays everything is digital. Another idea is to take digital pictures of the physical pictures. That way if anything were to happen, you still have the memory. Use Digital Frames. I had pictures up in house and use to change the physical pictures with every season, Halloween/Christmas etc. By keeping about 5 pictures in a frame and just shuffling which one to show every now and then. I have never been a greeting card saver. i think i get that from my mom. But i do put the greeting card on display when i receive it. like Birthday, Christmas etc.

I'm 74 and my mom is 99. I am finally at the point to do a death purge. Since mom has dementia, I can dispose of her stuff without stress and mine too. I have enjoyed mom's collections and mine and realize my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are not interested. I have even purged photos and journals. I'm actually enjoying the purge and feel free. I realize I will have to move in the near future and this stuff is not coming with me!!

this might sound morbid (we are discussing death cleaning) my SIL had a great method for keeping cards. She kept all the birthday (Christmas Easter etc) cards until the next year. If the person that sent the card passed during that year she kept that card separate. in the end she had only the last card sent by that person

Consider putting all the cards in a box. Open it on Christmas day, or one of the restful days following Christmas, let them see them and see if any really appeal to them. Maybe it is something you do every Christmas where you go through the cards of the year and see what is keep for next year to look at... or what can go in the fire? Just a thought.

Maybe this is addressed later in the video since I just started watching, but why not start a box for each child to give them when they become an adult. They can then decide if they want to keep their cards and other momentos. Everyone is different with what is special to them. Include photos in each box. Granted some things are obvious that can be tossed/donated right now, but consider the box for each idea.
